BILL PRESENTS ERIN'S 10 YEAR AWARD
  • This week's program was presented by Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Managing Attorney Clarissa Gaff. With great enthusiasm, she talked about the services her agency offers. Take a look at the video. You may know someone who would benefit from their services.
  • Mark 2, Dave, Chris 1 and Nathan were among the last of the 22 members to arrive. Allen was in the house about 11:40, followed by Darren, Wendell, Lori and Bill.
  • Lunch featured vintage ham, shredded BBQ  pork (served on a bun of your choice), g-beans, sweet tater casserole, Cole slaw and cake.
  • Ty, Lindsey and Wendell are all back from vaycay. Branson, Wisconsin and Cuba have now returned to normal.
  • Last Saturday Mark 1, Paul, Rod, Rick, and their spouses, helped to celebrate Red and Helen Littleton's birthdays in Jacksonville.
  • Wood River member "Uncle" Leonard was in the house drumming up support for the Rotary Foundation.
  • The Madco bar was well represented on Thursday, with Erin, Leonard and Clarissa in the house.
  • Dave circulated a ballot to vote on whom you would like to present a 5th Thursday personal classification talk (Please don't suggest Lori, you betcha).
  • Wendell does not recommend eating Cuban lasagna. He suggests that you can get any kind of cheese you want in Cuba, as long as it's mozzarella.
  • SAA Lindsey returned and posed this conundrum. Is pop really soda? She received an abundance of advice. Ty took the bag to help with the shameless fleecing. We sang a very lame rendition of the birthday song to recognize Chris 2 on his 29th. Lindsey offered some late 20's observations. Dave, Sandy and Lindsey all made announcements. The all Wisconsin trivia topics included Saturday Night Live, state capitol, astronaut, Dungeons and Dragons, West Allis and Firestone.
  • Opening duties were performed by Brad 1, Ty and Dave.
  • Paul, Wendell and Rick firmly, but politely, let Ty know that age 65 is NOT old.
  • Erin accepted her 10 year service award from Prez Bill.
  • Joe indicated that the East Alton American Legion will be adding veterans memorials to the two green spaces at the corners of Main and Shamrock Streets. He suggests that we may want to consider buying bricks honoring our deceased vets. Charlie Kunz,  Ed Keller, Cecil Neunaber come to mind, anyone else?
  • After "scooter "Paul's 50-50 number was drawn, the next three numbers all came from the same table. That's the second time that has happened in the past month. Of course, nothing suspicious, just saying... At any rate, Sherry, Lindsey and Chris 2 left everything on the table.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine, dry weekend.

WHY WE CHANGED OUR MEETING FORMAT

Past President Chris Brand works the webcast computer during a recent meeting.

By Margie Kersey, Rotary Club of Stone Mountain, Georgia, USA

I love my club, but I was concerned. When I joined in 2006, there were over 60 members. By July 2016, there were only 43. We were adding new members every year, but we were losing more. Looking at the average age of my club, I was more worried – over 30 percent of the club was over the age of 70. The future didn’t look bright. My goal as club president in 2016-17 was to make my club stronger. Membership was at the top of my agenda. The board and I identified two major issues: 1. We charged the second highest dues in our district and 2. Many members couldn’t make a weekly meeting. We addressed dues first. We moved our meeting to a church hall and hired a caterer that charges far less than the country club. We presented the plan to our members, who enthusiastically supported reducing our dues from $800 per person to $380 annually. Our dues didn’t include food or anything else, meals and Foundation donations were on top of this charge!  To continue reading, link here http://bit.ly/2v2kE7U

SMILE
Mr. and Mrs. Brown had two sons. One was named Mind Your Own Business & the other was named Trouble. One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to one hundred. Mind Your Own Business began looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes. Then he started looking in and under cars until a police man approached him and asked, "What are you doing?" "Playing a game," the boy replied. "What is your name?" the officer questioned. "Mind Your Own Business." Furious the policeman inquired, "Are you looking for trouble?!" The boy replied, "Why, yes."
