TAMMY RECEIVES HER PHF AWARD

NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE

Look for the next edition of your Eastender News on October 29th.
On Thursday LeonardB presented TammyI her Paul Harris Fellow award in recognition of her many years of community service. Her life's mission is to make our community a better place. Tammy went on to tell us that Riverbend Family Ministry has fully reopened after flood damage cleanup. She is so happy with the move across Ferguson Av. to the new HQ with 24,000 sq ft of space (vs 7K in the old space). The eight non-profits that work under the RFM umbrella now have the space to better serve their clients. Tammy is delighted with the collaborate effort demonstrated by these organizations to serve the various needs of our community. In September the agencies served 712 families. She concluded her presentation by sharing a special Christmas U-Haul story.
MarkSm asked everyone to continue selling your Chili Dinner tix and encouraged everyone to make a dessert to be served with the chili. These desserts are really popular with our customers. You can bring your dessert to EA-WR high school anytime after 3PM on Friday or drop it off at Mark's office on Wednesday-Shelter Insurance 162 E. Ferguson.
Program note-Julia's will not be available for our Nov 10th meeting. We will gather at Mr. Pancho's in their private room that day. WendellR will demonstrate the proper placement of the tiny paper umbrella in a tropical drink. Just kidding about that.
Let's wish WendellR a Happy Birthday on the 21st.
BradL is celebrating his 12th year as a Rotarian.

The Turkey Fund can is now making its weekly rounds. All donations will be presented to Operation Blessing. If you want to make a donation via check, make it payable to Operation Blessing. We collected $81 on Thursday. Thanks in advance for your generous support.
Post-noon arrivals included LeonardB @ 12:10, barely edging MikeSm, MarkV and LindseyH.
This past week you received an email about basketball shirt sponsorships. if you sponsored shirts at the last tournament you will automatically be opted-in for the upcoming event next month. If you want to add your name to the shirts let LoriP know ASAP.
The September board minutes have been posted under the 'club documents' tab located on your web site member page.
Fish 'n (potato) chips served as our entree, accompanied by popcorn shrimp, rolls and choco cake.
In Prez Robin's absence there was some confusion about who was in charge. BillP rang the opening bell, BradL did the same to close the meeting, before the 50-50 drawing.
ScottL arrived sporting a walking boot.
MarkA reminded everyone that our Family Cookout is in two weeks. There's still time and space to sign-up.
Word on the street is that the Wood River Donut Shop serves tasty, and meaty, biscuits 'n gravy every Saturday AM.
SAA LeonardB drafted BillP to serve as his lugmeister. We were quizzed about the Nobel awards. No Peace Prize winner here. Happy Fines were paid by TammyI and TylerL. Not signed-up for a District Conference event? Pay a $.
Opening duties were handled by ChrisH, WendellR and BillP, who was thankful for the baseball playoffs.
The $179 50-50 rolled after RickH and BillP failed to locate the joker. Bill, the joker, did find a jack. BillP also won the scratchie.

The rocky coastline of New England may come to mind first when you think of Maine, but the official nickname of the state is the “Pine Tree State.”Maine is the most forested state in the country, with nearly 90% of its land covered in forest. Pine trees are abundant throughout the state, including the white pine — one of the tallest trees that grows in eastern North America. The trees have played a role in Maine’s history, as they were prized for building ship masts, and are also recognized as the official state tree. The pine tree is also featured on Maine’s state flag, state seal, and state quarter.

SherryT escorted exchange student Dani to the EA meeting and told everyone that both of them would be attending the upcoming District Conference in Springfield. Dani also shared that she was involved with cheerleading at RHS.

The WR club met at the Rotary shelter in Belk Park.

The Turkey Fund can made its first appearance at the EA meeting. All donated $'s would go to Operation Blessing.

RHS Junior Rotarians Jacob Smith and Niah Bevolo attended the WR meeting.

It was announced at the EA meeting that the WR club had recently awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship to Operation Blessing's Executive Director Virginia Kirkpatrick. (Bravo!)

AlanaY was seeking cardboard boxes from fellow WR members to use to help build the Halloween Parade float.

Elves BillP and RhondaB were busy making plans for the EA Christmas party being held at the Alton Sports Tap.

DonnaK encouraged the WR members to continue selling their raffle tix.

BillP told the EA club that he is exploring the possibility of the club assisting with the Winter Wonderland event at Rock Springs Park.

JeanK and RhondaB told their respective clubs that the next Cosmic Bingo event would be held on March 11th.

JoeS told the EA club that the guy wanting the EA Library open 24 hours a day is now in prison.

PattiA told the WR members that she was open for business accepting Rotary clothing orders.

MarkSp announce to the EA club that he has given up on the Red Birds and is now focused on the Blues.

JohnP introduced members of the EA-WR Interact club.

BradP and LoriP missed on the opportunity to claim the $110 jackpot at the EA meeting.

JimH shared a tribute to his recently passed 102 year old uncle with fellow WR members.

WORLD POLIO DAY IS OCTOBER 24TH

We are making great progress towards eradicating polio, however recent news reminds us that polio anywhere is a threat everywhere. Polio is being detected around the world in places where it hasn’t been found in decades. In the United States, an unvaccinated man was paralyzed by polio. In the UK, poliovirus has been detected in sewage samples. In Malawi, a child contracted polio. And Mozambique announced its first polio outbreak of wild poliovirus in 30 years.

The time for urgent action is now. A new vaccine has been deployed to stop outbreaks. Malawi, Mozambique, and nearby countries are conducting immunization campaigns to stop the spread of the virus. With our partners and advocates like you, we continue to encourage communities worldwide to provide vaccinations.
