NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Ice Arena guru Larry Thatcher was on hand Thursday to provide a comprehensive history of the Eastgate facility. It began in the mid-90's when Larry recruited 11 parents who had children in figure skating or hockey programs. After funding a study that determined a for-profit model would not be realistic they went the non-profit route. After shopping the idea around to several Riverbend communities a deal was struck to locate the facility in East Alton. The village floated the bonds with the agreement that the Ice Arena would pay the debt from income. It worked. The bonds were retired three years ago. Larry wants to keep the customers happy. He wants the ice to be in good shape and available when promised. He's a strong believer in preventive maintenance. Larry told us about the hockey school program that is associated with facility and the Drive a Zamboni program that was created during the pandemic to replace lost income. 30+ years later Larry is still enthusiastic about serving the ice loving community.
DarrenC, LoriP and DaveA were the early birds.
MikeK reported that his mum, TommieM, is doing well.
MarioS told us about the recently opened Oiler Market food pantry located in the EA middle school. He has high hopes for the program and wants to expand pantry offerings. And yes, donations are accepted.
As this edition is published, Prez Robin and LoriP are heading to Rotary Spring Training in Springfield. Play ball!
Speaking of playing ball, LoriP will have Baseball Mania tickets available this coming Thursday. See her two emails from this past Thursday for additional info.
TylerL announced the recent partnership struck with the Ice Arena.
DaveA stepped in for SAA LeonardB and fined everyone without a badge and anyone who had not yet signed-up for online Baseball Mania. It didn't matter that LoriP had sent the online email only a couple of hours earlier. And ChrisH thought he was getting off free after not spying Leonard in the house, fooled him!
TylerL and BradL were among our post-nooners.
ChrisH mused that a car note today can be as much as a mortgage payment a couple of decades ago.
14 members dined on lasagna, Rotary g-beans, rolls, salad and cake. Chef Bob is impressed the the volume of food we can consume.
Opening duties were handled by Prez Robin,
MikeK and RodneyD.
Our program presenter had a chance at the $415 jackpot, he passed it on to MarioS who sent the pot to next week. LoriP won the scratch-off.

One of the Founding Fathers of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson was also a self-taught architect, among many other interests. The former governor of Virginia sought to reestablish America’s newfound independence when the state was looking to design its new capitol building. Instead of the popular Georgian style of the time (that bore King George of England’s name), Jefferson modeled it after a Roman temple in Nîmes, France, called the Maison Carée (meaning “Square House”). Jefferson commissioned French architect Charles-Louis Clerisseau to help bring a similar building to life in Richmond, Virginia, which was completed in 1788.

The joint meeting of the WR, EA and Bethalto clubs on the 19th went very well.
JohnP was pushing tickets for the upcoming Rotary Day at Busch Stadium.
The RHS scholarship students broke bread with the EA members. Junior Rotarians Taylor Slayden and Scott Monroe did likewise at the WR meeting.
BradP presented a make-up from the WR club.
The WR club Mouse Race was scheduled for May 8th.
LoriP was distributing Baseball Mania tickets at the EA meeting. She also told everyone that we would have two students attending the upcoming RYLA weekend.
The WR $51 jackpot went unclaimed. The same fate befell the $204 EA jackpot.
ScottL and GeorgeM would be serving as upcoming WR meeting greeters.

Last July, I attended a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Academy in Missouri, USA, that changed my life. I found myself in the right place at the right time. In the span of less than four days, I made unbelievable friendships, met mentors who were willing to give me wise counsel, and learned skills that I can use to explore a future of endless opportunities.
Several months earlier, my high school counselor had invited me into her office to tell me that the Branson-Hollister Rotary Club wanted to send me to a RYLA event. I knew what an honor it was to be selected. As the trip approached, I was more excited and anxious than for any trip I had previously taken.
The week began with the ride from my town of Hollister, Missouri, to Warrensburg and the campus of the University of Central Missouri. Upon arriving on campus, I checked into the dorms and met my roommate for the four nights. Her name was Ella, and she was from St. Louis. I was not sure how we would get along, as her and my backgrounds were considerably different. But we got along great and stayed up talking about everything and anything every night.
The first day, we did ice breakers to get to know one another. The entire event was filled with activities designed to help us learn about each other and get to know ourselves. Rotary members came and talked to us. We did some fun activities as a large group.
