               OCTOBER  6, 2018

              NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE

                  CAKE, PIE OR SALAD...
  • Look for your next Rotary Banner on October 20th, or maybe the 27th, just depends.
  • The program was presented by Circuit Judge Dave Dugan. Sharing some bad examples of English law from the 17th century, he focused on the idea of judicial independence that is enshrined in our constitution. He has some serious concerns about the public perception of the U.S. judiciary.
  • The hard copy sign-up list for the family steak fry has disappeared. A new one circulated on Thursday. If you signed-up electronically, no worries, you're in. If you were not present at Thursday's meeting, and plan to attend, let Lori know. We will gather on Thursday October 11th at Kendall Hill Park. Dinner will be served at 6PM. NO noon meeting!
  • "All Hale" to Allen on celebrating 100 years of the Hale family business in East Alton. Quite an accomplishment.
  • Does anyone really believe that Rhonda got in trouble in school for talking too much? I thought so.
  • Watch your furniture when BradL arrives.
  • Pat did indeed look good!
  • Please invite a veteran to lunch on November 8th, in appreciation  for their service. The meal's on us. Let Lori know if you plan to bring someone so she can insure that there is sufficient food on hand.
  • Wendell just put the blade to a 200 year old tree that had led a full life, with photo documentation to boot.
  • When was the last time Sandy, Sherry and Rick were at the same meeting? It's been too long. Smile!
  • Will someone please bring a block of cheese to our next noon meeting? Maybe it will keep Sherry from fishing around in the salad bowl for some.
  • The very late arriving crowd grew to 24 before it was all over. First in were Allen, MarkA, Virgil and Dick. Last in were DaveM, Paul, BradL and Rhonda. We missed Ty, Darren, Nate, Queenie, Randy, Erin, DaveS, Joe, and MarkV.
  • The Turkey Fund can made its first appearance of the season. $15 was collected. It will be on hand each Thursday thru November 15th. All donations will be given to Operation Blessing to assist with Thanksgiving meals. Lori noted that  OB founder and Executive Director Virginia Kirkpatrick will be retiring soon. What a wonderful job she has done over the last 36 (or is it 39) years. We thank her for her service to our community.
  • MarkA opines that ALL truck traffic can be found on I-70.
  • Lunch featured a choice of two noodle in white sauce enteees-broccoli or chicken. It was accompanied by two types of rolls, salad and cake or pie.
  • Congrats to MarkA on the birth of his new grandson.
  • Queenie appointed ChrisL has her surrogate SAA. He, in turn, recruited the other Chris as the $$ collector. Not here last week, pay a $. We failed get get any of the four trivia questions correct. Yikes!
  • Somehow Wendell missed the Roxana Rock 'n Roll Reunion.
  • Opening duties were performed by BradL, Rhonda and Bill
  • The $71 50-50 jackpot was left untouched by MarkA and Dick. Patty took the scratch-off.
  • That's all from here, have a fine and dry weekend. Ciao!
  •         THE VERDICT?  GUILTY!
                PEACE TO YOU TOO!

SATELLITE CLUB GETS BACK TO ROTARY'S ROOTS

By Tony Scaife, Rotary Club of Aireborough, West Yorkshire, England

For the last few months, I’ve been helping exuberant members of the Leeds Phoenix Satellite Rotary Club get established. I’ve been on a wonderful voyage watching as a new network of professionals rediscover Rotary’s roots. My new Rotarian friend Sam, seen in the photo above helping to present the club’s first charity cheque, said to me:
“it’s really exciting being part of a new, diverse group…making lasting change in the community and having fun”
Encouraged and supported by other established Rotarians, I launched the Leeds Phoenix Club in February 2018 and watched, with amazement, delight, and relief, as more and more of my new friends invited their friends to come along and share our Rotary journey. Early in this new Rotary year I finally had the pleasure of watching Sam, as president, sign a new club charter application for Leeds Phoenix.
My own Rotary life has been so enriched by working with these talented, vigorous diverse Rotarians, and seeing how Rotary’s core values of fellowship and service are just as attractive to the city’s new ‘digital’ working population as they were to previous generations.
