  • Break's over, let's get after it...
  • On Thursday RhondaB shared her  "classification talk". We found out that she is a native of Calhoun County (where everyone knows your name) and helped with her family owned orchard. She played softball (a two-pitch specialist) and basketball in high school. She has a marketing degree from Quincy University. Rhonda has three children, two boys and a girl, that she is very proud of. She began her banking career at the Bank of Kampsville with fond memories of sorting processed checks to be returned to bank customers. She was employed for a bit at the Payless Shoe store in the St. Louis Center and found out that it was owned by  May Company, the same company that owned Famous-Barr Department stores. Thursday marked her 19th anniversary in banking where she now serves the small business community at Busey Bank. Rhonda is grateful for the opportunities the banking business has given her to be involved with community service. That's a win for her and for our club.
  • During the final quarter of 2021 our foundation received $32.49 from Amazon as our share of sales from shoppers that selected our foundation as part of the Amazon Smile program that benefits non-profit organizations. If you would like to participate, find our East Alton Rotary Club Foundation in Smile.Amazon when you check out. We receive .05% of every purchase. Our foundation has received over $450 during the past several years as participants in this program. That's found money for us.

Feel free to bring your phone, tablet or laptop and follow along with the presentation  by BradP, Prez Lindsey and RickH who hope to provide everyone with some basic information about our online presence. Julia's has a strong WiFi signal for all your devices.
  • BillP covered for for Prez Lindsey and began the meeting, and the start of our second year, with a mighty bang of the bell.
  • Opening duties were provided by DarrenC, BradP and BillP who shared some thoughts about the Epiphany.

  • Congrats to CoryG for his 16 years of service.
  • 15 members braved the teen-ish temps to dine on some fine Italian beef, cheezy noodles, Rotary g-beans, rolls, salad and chocolate cake.

Which of these states is closest in area to Puerto Rico?
Tennessee
Connecticut
New Mexico
Illinois

Puerto Rico is about 3,515 square miles in area, meaning that if it were a state, it'd be the third-smallest in the U.S. Just ahead of it would be Connecticut, which is 5,543 square miles. Puerto Rico is larger than both Delaware (1,982 square miles) and Rhode Island (1,214 square miles). Though it would be a tiny state, Puerto Rico is the largest of the U.S. territories — beating the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam. And in population, Puerto Rico ranks higher than 21 states in the Union with its 3.2 million residents — roughly the same amount as Utah.

DOUBLE CLUB MEMBERSHIP IN 60 MINUTES
By David Higgs, president, Rotary Club of Henderson, Texas, USA

When I was asked to serve as president of our local Rotary club, I knew I needed to focus on recruiting new members during my term. Our club was down to about 20 members and far too often we would have less than a dozen at our weekly meeting. So, I took some of the ideas I learned at Presidents Elect Training Seminars and molded an approach to enlisting new members.
The strategy was simple. I challenged our club to move our annual installation of officer’s banquet to a noon event. I also challenged our club to open the event up to the public. Then, I challenged our members to work together as a club to have 100 people in attendance. Ten professionally printed invitations were given to each member to invite guests. I made it clear members were expected to bring guests. I invited the mayor and other city officials who were happy to attend. Some of our members invited leaders from the school district and County. Almost everyone is up for a free lunch.
Acting in faith, we had the facility set up for 100 people and ordered food accordingly. When the day arrived, I was excited to see that every member brought guests. Our club had never had a meeting with 100 people in attendance. Some members brought one or two guests, others 10 to 12. The excitement was palpable.
During the luncheon, we shared with the guests what Rotary was about and then gave them the opportunity to join. They were given an offer that our club would pay their dues for the first six months. At the appropriate time we passed out applications and dedicated three minutes for guests to complete the form. I was convinced we could double our club during that 60-minute luncheon. And by the time the luncheon was over we had 14 new members!
These new members have brought a breath of fresh air to our club. We have had several projects since, where the new members have had a chance to get to know one another better.
The bottom line is, if you put in the effort and encourage club members to get on board 100 percent, you can increase your club size during an installation banquet or some other special event. You can do it!
