              SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS
                          RYLA GUYS
  • Jim Folsom presented a program about Serving Our Streets. Once per week volunteers and groups meet at a park in downtown St. Louis and offer a variety of items (food, drink, clothes, etc) to upwards of 200 homeless people. He describes the event as a sort of "pot luck", you never know what groups will show up and what they will have to give away. Jim finds the event very fulfilling and spent some time describing a few of his encounters.  If you want additional information, take a gander as the SOS Saving Our Streets facebook page, or contact Jim via his page.
  • Six of our scholarship students and their Roxana and East Alton-Wood River High Schools support staff were in the house on Thursday. They were joined by our two 2019 RYLA guys, Graham and Colin. Each of the students shared their summer plans. The RYLA students both indicated how much they enjoyed the weekend program. It forced each of the guys out of their comfort zones.
  • Roxana Super Deb K. reports that our most recent exchange student, Dani Fuentes, is doing well and attending college.
  • Paul returned from a family visit to California.
  • The buffet featured the most items EVER. Julia's cleaned out the freezer and cupboard to put out a "Chinese buffet", with no Chinese food and no signs.
  • Joe presented a make-up from a Memphis club, dating to 2006. Statute of limitations?
  • Rotary Banner scanning continues. Issues thru 2001 can now be viewed at our web site.
  • With all the students in the house the average room age dropped sharply, and that's always a good thing.
  • Joe and Lori teamed up to tell us about the Village clean-up day taking place on June 8th. We will meet at the Keasler Rec Center at 8:30, work until 2. Lunch is provided.  Last year 200 bags were collected. The sign-up sheet is circulating.
  • We know that Candy Runion/Mark was our first female member. Who was #2,3,4,5...? Wait for it...Thursday.
  • Pat and Darren arrived before Allen, holy cow!  Pat did save him a seat. Among the last of 22 members to arrive were Prez Patty, Nate, Rhonda and BradP.
  • SAA Quennie "recruited" Randy to give her a hand collecting the mega-bucks. We "serenaded" Paul for his birthday. Not here last week? Pay a $. Not part of the school groups, pay a $. Trivia topics included cats 'n dogs, corn rows, tourism, plane crashes, roller coasters, card kings and baseball.
  • The $72 50-50 jackpot was not claimed by BradP or Nate. MarkA's scratching was for naught.
  • That's it, have a fine and dry weekend. Ciao!

April 27th is National Tell a Story Day

Which state has both the highest and lowest points in the contiguous U.S.?
California
Colorado
Montana
Washington

You can visit the Lower 48's highest and lowest points without even leaving the same California county. Inyo County is home to both Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous U.S., and the lowest, Death Valley's Badwater Basin. Mount Whitney soars 14,505 feet above sea level and Badwater Basin sits 282 feet below sea level — and they are only 84.6 miles apart. Inyo County, at 10,227 square miles, is bigger than Vermont and New Hampshire. You'll also find the oldest living non-clonal organism on Earth here too — the Inyo National Forest's bristlecone pines. One tree named Methuselah is almost five thousand years old!

DATELINE:RI
ROTARY CHANGED THE WAY I SEE THE WORLD

By Christian Miguel da Silva, alumnus of Interact and Rotaract clubs, Rotary Youth Exchange program, and the New Generations Service Exchange program.

Watching the news today can create a lot of anxiety. Have you noticed how upside down the world can seem at times? But whenever I find myself feeling the darkness of the world we live in, I remember the positive experiences I have had in Rotary programs, and how they have made me an optimist.
I’m 30-years-old, and my first experience in Rotary was at 13. Invited by friends, I went to my first Interact Club meeting, and didn’t want to leave.
I grew up in Chopinzinho, a small Brazilian city with less than 20,000 inhabitants. Teenagers have two options for fun: Interact or the church. I chose the first. In Interact, I learned values that only volunteer work can instill: empathy, responsibility, and a sense of community.
But my greatest experience in Rotary was yet to come. At 16, I left my village to spend a year in La Paz, Mexico as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. Few things make a young person mature as quickly as a cultural exchange. In Mexico, I was welcomed by incredible families; each family had its differences, and each taught me lessons I will carry with me the rest of my life.
During my exchange year, a tsunami devastated several countries in Asia in December 2004, killing millions of people. Among the victims were relatives of a Thai friend of mine who was in the same region where I was. That was the first time I realized that borders were nothing more than meaningless conventions. The pain of our friends is also our pain, as long as we are able to open up to the world. To continue reading link here https://bit.ly/2GFgl9X
