NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE

POST-MEETING KIBITIZING
  • Patty introduced the program presenter, Donna Green. She is associated with Green Home Solutions and AdvantaClean. If you need any indoor remediation, Donna and her company will take care of you. Her husband represents the true American small business entrepreneurial spirit. Take a look at the video.
  • Pat was the first in at 11:40, Chris 1 arrived at 12:15. Between them we saw Sherry, Allen Mark 1, Randy, Rhonda, Dave and Brad 1 make their presence known.
  • Lunch consisted of chicken and dumplings (some might say noodles), mashed taters w/ gravy, g-beans, biscuits/rolls, salad X 2, mini-pies and cake.
  • Want to know the difference between a $50 and a $20 bill? Ask Pat.
  • Wendell was in Columbia mining for emeralds, Cory was at Six Flags enjoying the water flume.
  • Mark's 1 and 3 were headed for the links. "It's nuts being out in this heat" was one wags thought.
  • Lori has sent you a request about two potential members. Don't forget to respond.
  • Is Sherry's car color deep purple or black cherry?
  • Bill shared his watery welcome to Bethalto with us. Several inches in his basement.
  • Birthday Joe's advice was a friendly reminder to turn off your cruise control when driving through water.
  • Paul was lamenting the fact that he is no longer the "gold standard" for arriving late. The mantle has been passed to Rhonda, Brad 1 or Chris.
  • Leonard "Ice" Berg was our sole guest.
  • Lori reminded everyone that Baseball Mania starts NOW! (Really Monday). You can still sell tickets for two more weeks.
  • Rick reminded everyone that it's our responsibility to make sure that exchange student Daniela gets to experience some of the great things about our great country. Be thinking about what experiences you can share with her. With Debbie K's permission, Rick will keep the Daniel's official calendar so that Debbie doesn't have to worry about it.
  • 13 ballots were officially cast for the 2015-16 Rotary Program of the Year. Four of those ballots listed the same program as their favorite. Can you guess which one? The results will be announced on Thursday. What a tease!
  • SAA Bill drafted Patty to help round up the stray $$$. Star Trek (unsaid was the fact that Thursday was the 47th anniversary of "One small step..."), Bethalto water/trash and baseball double-header were the trivia topics.
  • Opening duties were provide by Sherry, Paul and Bill, who offered thanks for air conditioning.
  • Mark 3 and Allen X 2 picked at the deck and scratched at the off. The $15 jackpot rolled.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend and await cooler temps on Monday.

  • Doesn't expecting the unexpected mean that the unexpected is actually expected?
  • Take my advice-I'm not using it.
  • I hate it when people use big words just to make themselves sound perspicacious.

EXCHANGE STUDENT VISIT

(A recent article in the Belleville News-Democrat featured a long term exchange student From Mexico sponsored by the O'Fallon club. It's a very timely story for us as we prepare to host Daniela from Chile. Enjoy the read.-Rick)

Mikheila Flores is no stranger to excessive heat. So, when Flores, now 16, arrived in O’Falllon from Salina Cruz, Mexico she felt right at home.

“I had many colds while here, and it’s very, very hot year-round, so the winter was so cold to me,” Flores said as she mimiced shivering.

Although she liked experiencing winter for the first time, the changing seasons didn’t help her head colds and congestion, Flores said.

Like many Rotary Youth Exchange students, Flores had many ‘first time’ experiences in the last year after she took the plunge to study and live abroad for a year in O’Fallon.

The Central States Rotary Youth Exchange program(CSRYE) encompasses 18 districts from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Ontario Canada. O’Fallon falls withing Disrict 6510.

The City of O’Fallon proclaimed June 20 to be ‘Mikheila Flores Day,’ which Flores said was very unexpected.

“I can’t believe they did that, it was so nice of them. I feel special,” said Flores, who will soon be returning to Oaxca, a state in southern Mexico known for its indigenous cultures.

The smiling and friendly, yet shy teen said turning 16 while in the U.S. was a birthday to remember.

“I love it here, and I plan to come back for visits,” Flores said. “I’ve met so many and made so many friends.” To continue reading, link here http://tinyurl.com/jp9mh7g
