Riverbend Head Start and Family Services Executive Director Gene Howell made a presentation on Thursday. His organization has been around in some form since 1916, when they began with a home visit program. They currently serve about 300 families at their six locations in Madison County or via home visits. In a typical year they serve about 1,000 families. In the 1990's they dropped sponsorship of several state programs that Illinois failed to fund in a timely fashion. 80% of their current budget is funded by the feds/state. The other 20% comes from local sources. Gene introduced Lisa, a teacher at the Alton center, who shared a very emotional experience that she had with a client family last year.
Our Christmas party is slated for December 21st. We need a host. Might that be you?? If you are interested let Prez Rodney or LoriP know, ASAP.

SherryT was enthusiastic about our recent post Chili Dinner debriefing at the Airliner. She suggested we debrief after our Christmas Wonderland event and start preplanning for our '24 Chili Dinner@ EA-WR.
Early arrivals included RodC, AllenH and MarkA.
The slide right in crew included PaulH, JohnP and SherryT.
The Turkey Fund jar will be circulating weekly. Thanks for your generous support. All donations will be given to Operation Blessing to assist families during the holiday season.
SAA PattiA fined everyone who did not help with our Chili Dinner. It turns out that she was the only member who owed a $.
Opening duties were handled by SherryT, AllenH and JohnP.
A meager 12 members were in the house to dine on $ sandwiches, chips, broccoli soup, salad and cookies.
LeonardB was the last to arrive@ 12:16.
PaulH and SherryT were not able to locate the joker among the 9 cards they had to chose from. LoriP won the scratch-off. Now, here's the kicker, not only were they each seated at the same table, they were seated next to each other.

What is the most common street name in the United States?

In the United States, “Second Street” claims the prize as the most common street name. It’s not that town councils across the country just forgot about First Street; quite often this street is named something like Main or Park. Then the naming conventions jump into Second, Third, Fourth, etc... Nationwide, according to U.S. Census data, there are 10,866 Second Streets, followed closely by 10,131 Third Streets, backed up by 9,898 First Streets. Park seems to be more popular than Main, as there are 8,926 Park Streets, compared to 7,644 Main Streets.

The WR club heard a presentation from PattiA about her Tower Garden. Sherry Gilleland spoke to the EA club about her Dream Home charities project (that sounds familiar).
LoriP received congrats on receiving the district sponsored Difference Maker award.
The WR club social was slated to be held at the Pump House. Prez PaulG and PattiA were organizing.
EA club members were scheduled to install insulation at the Habitat house located on Lincoln Av in EA. MarkA thought it would be a three hour project.
AlanaY was coordinating the Halloween float. DonnaK was accepting candy or $$ for the event.
BillP was the earliest of the 24 members to arrive, @ 11:40. PaulH was the last, an hour later.
EA-WR Junior Rotarians Bekah Null and Nicholas Hayes broke bread with the WR members.
Sherry Tite shared an amusing tale about her and the meeting presenter, formerly know as Sherry Tite.
LeonardB paid a Happy Fine.
The EA-WR scholarship interviews were in the books.
MIkeK introduced visitors.
RhondaB announced that the Christmas party was scheduled to be held at the Bluff City Grill on December 14th.
CherylM failed to claim the $411 WR jackpot, RickH and LoriP met with the same results @ the EA meeting.

INVITE A FRIEND, RECRUIT A FUTURE PRESIDENT

Until 2007, my Rotary knowledge consisted of spotting “Rotary Meets Here” signs on the edges of small towns.
Then two Rotary Club of Norfolk members invited me to learn about their club. I didn’t know the club president and club member who treated me to breakfast. But their enthusiasm for Rotary made me eager to know more.
This friendly duo recruited me after realizing their club had no members from the community foundation where I worked. While enjoying eggs and pancakes, the Rotarians talked about their club and invited me to a meeting. Later, they sponsored me for membership.
The timing was perfect. My only child was heading to college, and my 13 years of helping lead PTAs and booster clubs was ending. Rotary quickly filled that void as I volunteered with club members:
Reading to children in Title I elementary schools and giving them free books.
Sorting donated canned beans, peanut butter and other staples at our local foodbank.
Picking up plastic wrappers and cigarette butts during the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Clean the Bay Days.
The volunteer gigs, fascinating meeting speakers, and regular check-ins from my sponsor hooked me on Rotary. After a year, I chaired the community service committee. Then I joined the board of directors and climbed the leadership ladder to club president in 2015-16.
Today, my favorite parts of Rotary remain the same as in 2007 – learning from meeting speakers, doing meaningful community service, and having fun with fellow Rotarians. To share my positive experiences, I always look for potential members – good people with a heart for service. Among my Rotary recruits are:
A government auditor I met at a 6:30 a.m. boot camp at the gym.
Several community leaders I knew through my foundation work.
A psychologist who spotted my nextdoor.com post about an upcoming Rotary fundraiser, messaged me, and became my real-life friend.
These recruits have either chaired club committees or served on the board with one of them on the way to becoming club president.
