NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE

  • (There was no program this week,so don't be lookin' for a video)
  • 18 members were in the house. Red and Lori were the early arrivals, Paul and Rhonda were among the last.
  • Joe took the new gavel from Lori and gave his best Roger impression. He called on Wendell, Sherry and Red to open the festivities.
  • Sandy was so proud of herself. She has memorized the 4- way test. Well done!
  • Roger had meniscus clean-up surgery on Wednesday. (Paul wanted to know if this type of 'clean-up' requires the use of Dawn dishwashing liquid.) Roger plans to return to work on Monday. Maybe we will see him on Thursday.
  • Allen has an AC on the fritz at home. Pam escaped the heat by heading to Indiana. Well played!
  • Mark A. and Joe are still looking for golf balls they lost at Gateway last week.
  • Ham and roasted taters provided the entree. Caesar salad and cake finished the meal.
  • Allen seemed genuinely happy to see the return of 'the blondes', who promised to sit at his table. Didn't happen.
  • Paul presented Brad P. with his 25th anniversary certificate.
  • Our solo guest was 'cousin' Jeff who turned out to be an eat 'n run guy.
  • Joe reported that we may get a new member, as long as Paul is willing to give him a free adjustment.
  • Rhonda hears that Jeny and Eric are happy with their new jobs. We miss their energy and talent.
  • Joe asks if anyone remembers the year where we were looking for matching scholarship $$ and had a fundraising event every month.
  • Did you know that you can use WD-40 for aching joints and that there was an Alton surgeon who used Black and Decker tools in the OR? Chris suggested that DeWalt tools were too expensive.
  • Rhonda promised that cosmic bingo tickets were soon be available (October 24th). Flyers to follow. It seems that Paul can't wait to see how good he can look under black lights. Can we sell more tickets than the WR club?
  • Lori reminded everyone that you can still sell BaseballMania tickets. We had a big unsold winner.
  • SAA Bill enlisted Sandy's help as the lugmeister. Fred was assigned the Fine Du Jour. Red's 88th birthday was Wednesday. Mark A. reports that Habitat for Humanity has received a donated lot in EA. It's a possible new home site. A house is currently under construction in Roxana. Bill's daughter is visiting from Vermont. She must really love her parents to give up a Vermont summer for the STL humidity. The last VW bug was built (in Mexico) in 2003. Kentucky, Tennessee, the House of Burgess and 'under God' were among the correct answers. The questions were wrong!
  • Rhonda provided an update on the $100 donation we made to the Hartford AOG backpack program. 1008 packs were given away to school age children, assisting 437 families.
  • Bill pulled Mark A's and Allen tickets for the 50-50. He pulled his ticket for the scratch-off.
  • Fred's fine took Rhonda off the schneid and she volunteered to chair the Christmas party.
  • The Wood River drug bust and the Cardinals TV deal were worthy table talk topics.
  • It seems that some of the salt shakers were broke. Yikes!
  • That's all from here...have a fine and dry week

A beautiful partnership of service through Rotary

Students use the sound proof therapy room at the school for the deaf and mute.

Students use the sound proof therapy room at the Kamalini school for children with hearing and speech impairments.

Prafull Karnik, past president of the Rotary Club of Thane East, Maharashtra, India

Our unique partnership with the Rotary Club of Mission Viejo in California, USA, began more than a decade ago when I was president and I was looking for a centennial project for our club. With other members of the club, I visited Nakhwa School in Thane, established in 1964 to provide education for children from low-income families, and was convinced this would be a great opportunity for us to serve.
