NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
LoriP introduced our program presenters on Thursday, Denise Arendell and Sarah Rankin, co-founders of the 100+ Women Who Care from 618 chapter. While on a trip out west a few years ago Denise stumbled in to a 100+ meeting and became enchanted with the simple and effective concept. Find a group of women who are willing to meet for an hour once a quarter and donate $100 at each meeting to a local non-profit that is selected during the meeting with a goal of donating at least $10,000 to the designated organization. At their first meeting in 2019 they raised $31,900. During the pandemic they have continued to meet via Zoom and have sustained the $30K donation level each time. There is a private group Facebook page that contains additional information.
We had 21 members @ Julia's on Thursday and four members join via Zoom. Someone by the name of "Steve" also joined us. Since SteveD was in the house, Zoomie Steve is an unknown. So, "Steve", tell us who you are and receive a meeting credit!

Deeply discounted Happy Fines were offered by SAA Sherry for her cancer clean bill of health, JohnP for his pending retirement, GeorgeT for his birthday and his low PSA readings following his prostate cancer surgery (he even rang the Rotary cancer bell) and RandyN for having GeorgeT in the house.
Early arrivals included LoriP, BradL and MarkA.
Yummy fried chicken was our entree on Thursday. Bakers and glazed carrots were the sides. Salad, apple and cherry pies and layer cake were also available.
Sneak peak for next week-look for a Memorial Day picnic themed buffet. Bring your own spicy mustard!
Pledge and grace duties were handled by RandyN with JohnP taking care of the 4-way.
BarbO joined us in person for the first time, nice to have her in the house.
Long-time club friend Cora Miller was LoriP's guest.
It was a terrible day for our treasury. Each of the four trivia Q's posed by SAA Sherry were answered correctly. Prez Chris was left holding an empty blue bucket.
Post-nooners included JohnP, SherryT, GeorgeM and Jason W.
Prez Chris announced that RandyN had been "selected" as the Prez of our club foundation. Randy went on to announce that DonnaK is working on putting our merged scholarship programs back on track after merger and pandemic delays and interruptions. By the way, it's time to look forward to next school year and bring back the Student(s) of the Month/Junior Rotarian program that was a long standing feature of the weekly WR meetings. It's a great way to expose high achieving students to the values of Rotary and recognize their accomplishments.
LoriP still has lots of packs of 10 Baseball Mania tickets available. Each ticket sells for $10. Complete the bottom of each ticket and return with payment to her. We keep 65% of each ticket sold. The contest begins in July and runs 10 weeks. There are 35 weekly winners, from $10 to $250. If you win, look for a check in the mail.
SteveD and MarkA took their delayed shot at the $152 jackpot. No luck. Prez Chris and CherylM then tried their hand at finding the joker. Nope. BarbO receive the scratch-off.

he “Top of Texas” is the 8,751-foot Guadalupe Peak in the western part of the state. The peak is capped with a silver pyramid that was placed there in 1958 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Butterfield Overland Mail Trail, a stagecoach service that once carried passengers and mail just south of the peak before it was disbanded during the Civil War. The company won the first contract for overland mail between St. Louis and San Francisco, and it’s no coincidence that the company who later sponsored the 1958 pyramid — American Airlines — won the first government contract for airmail between the two cities. To reach the pyramid from Pine Springs Campground, be prepared to trek 8.4 miles in the Chihuahuan Desert heat with an elevation gain of 3,000 feet.

The EA club welcomed all four of the current scholarship students from EA-WR HS. The two seniors would each be receiving $3,800 in scholarship monies.
The recent WR Mouse Derby earned an estimate profit of $3,600. Thanks to JohnP for organizing the event.
All EA members were reminded to turn in their Baseball Mania ticket monies ASAP.
ADG DaveA was seeking basket donations for the District Conference. Prez-Elect Kevin Stuby was doing the same thing at the EA club.
The WR BOD accepted the resignation of Mark Cappel as he was returning to a position in the Alton School District.
The new Rotary sponsored stop/street signage at the Main & Shamrock intersection was almost ready to be installed.
JohnP received a fine from Pat Devening for some undisclosed behavior related to the aforementioned Mouse Derby.
Chef Bob served up a tasty Chinese buffet to the EA club.
ScottL led the WR club in singing Row, Row...
BradP and DaveM failed in their attempt to win the 50-50 $54 jackpot @ the EA meeting. Dick Bell passed on the WR $157 winners share.
Martha Schultz paid a $5 Happy Fine in honor of her recent marriage and surname change.
TheEA Installation of Officers dinner would be held on June 25th @ Moonlight.
GeorgeT handled the greeter duties @ the WR meeting.
