NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
EAWR'S VIVIAN

  • Mark 3 introduced our speaker Valorie Harris. She is the Associate Dean for Adult Education at LCCC. She provided an overview of the programs offered at the four campuses. Take a look.
  • Breakfast was served! (This is NOT Chris 2's idea.) Muffins and cake were also on the feed table.
  • For the second week running, the guest speaker was the 1st to arrive. Huh?  Mark 3, Mark 1, Lori and Allen followed. Matt and Roger brought up the rear. They barely beat late reliables Paul, Chris 1, and Rhonda. We had 21 members in the house.
  • Why were all the tables set? Read on.
  • We welcomed three scholarship students who were in the house to receive their tuition checks. Up front, let's thank Erin for her great job serving as the program coordinator. She announced that EAWR graduate Vivian was receiving $2300. Rox grads Brendan and Sawyer received $2250 and $1900, respectively. Sawyer will attend LCCC for an auto mechanic degree. Brendan will also attend LCCC seeking a degree in criminal justice. Vivian (don't you love that old school name?) will be attending Eastern Illinois seeking a degree in psychology.
  • Erin announced that Fred will be assisting her with the scholarship program.
  • Mark 3 found out that his iPhone likes the deep crevices of his couch.
  • Sandy confirmed that 26 is indeed more than 25. Maybe it was the hot dog she had for breakfast?
  • Lori announced that we had sold 243 paper mania tix along with 24 electronic ones. Our net is $1735. Let's hope for some big winners whose names don't start with Joe or Chris 1.
  • Cory spiked the family day outing at Six Flags last Thursday for an indoor respite at City Museum. Good call!
  • Wendell is still in Columbia, but sent an update on our cleft palate project. Look for the story elsewhere in this issue and on the main page.
  • Rick announced the Program of the Year winners. With 14 points we have the Habitat work day. Ties for 2nd with 10 points each were the Got Your Six therapy dogs and Cahokia Mounds program. Thanks to all who submitted ballots.
  • Prez Sherry inducted her first new member, Lindsey Kahl. Fred presented her with the Rotary pin, What seemed to be a pin malfunction turned out to be an operator error. If you have not done so, please welcome Lindsey.
  • Don't forget the tip box for Karen. FYI, there will not be a December collection for her. Remember you are rewarding her for her great service, not the food.
  • Opening duties were provided by Sandy, Brad 1 and Colonel Dave. (The Met Life blimp has been hanging out at his place.)
  • Bill was off to Woodstock (47 years too late) so Rick subbed. Questions about the National Park Service, Program of the Year and the Olympics were featured. Cory and Chris 2 had their birthday's recognized with a sad sack rendition of the birthday song. It wasn't Allen's fault.
  • Sandy and Roger drew the deck, Chris 2 the scratcher. The $25 jackpot rolled.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

CLEFT PALATE INTERNATIONAL PROJECT UPDATE

(Below is a note from Wendell Ross providing an update on our recent international project in Columbia. To provide context, his original report from June 2014 has been bumped up to near the top of our home page. Wendell's photos have been added to the international project photo album found on the right side of our home page. A successful international project demonstrates what Rotary is all about.)

I recently went to the hospital where the Crilap Foundation that the East
Alton Rotary Club and Barranquilla Oriente Rotary Club cosponsored was
located. I found out that it had moved to a location in the annex of a new
hospital called Puertoazul in February.  So the wife and I took a taxi to
it.  The sad news is that the director I first met had passed away this last
January. Her then assistant Katia Mendoza is now Executive Director.  And
now the Crilap foundation is called Fabrica de Sonrisas Foundation.
Website
http://www.fabricadesonrisas.co.  There is a page where you can make
private donations.
When I entered the office and mentioned East Alton Rotary Club you should
have seen their faces light up. It was very heart warming. We talked about
the project.  Our clubs project helped 15 children's lives change.  There
were  surgeries this day for 2 more  happening.  Also the foundation had
35 applicants for  surgeries.  So as in many places in the world this is a
continuing need.  I was glad to be a part of helping so many children in
need via using Rotary International.
On the offices walls were 5 pictures/photos of
some of the children that they helped.  4 of the 5 pictures/photos are of
the children that were helped from our Clubs project.

Children
  • There are only two things that a child will share willingly; communicable diseases and their mother's age
  • Cleaning the house while your kids are at home is like trying to shovel the driveway during a snowstorm
  • Kids really brighten a household; they never turn off any lights
  • An alarm clock is a device for waking people who don't have small kids
  • Shouting to make the kids obey is like using your horn to steer your car
  • Any child can tell you that the sole purpose of having a middle name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble
THE BOTTOM LINE

According to data from real estate company Trulia, the percentage of homes in San Francisco and a neighboring county valued at $1 million or more rose from 19.6% in 2012 to 57.4% today.-The Wall Street Journal

Walt Disney this year surpassed $5 billion at the global box office faster than any other studio in history.-Deadline.com
THE LAST WORD

"Believe all that is necessary to your happiness."-Edna St. Vincent Millay

" There is nothing further away from Washington than the entire world."-Arthur Miller
