         NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE

      CAN YOU FIND THE JOKER?
  • Thursday's program was presented by Madison County Sheriff Deputy Lt. James Joeken. He made a presentation about situational awareness, something we could all be better at. The video has been posted. Take a look for some very useful tips.
  • Our club home page has been updated to allow for better mobile device visibility. Some of the elements have also been rearranged. Take a look. If you have any suggestions for improvement, let Rick know.
  • @ 11:45 no members had arrived. Patty, Brad 2 and Wendell were the first. By the time Rhonda, Joe and Randy arrived, 24 members had found a seat.
  • Seeing Patty and Dave in the house before noon was a bit disorienting, but in a good way !
  • Sherry took the gavel and covered for MIA Prez Bill. She did her usual great job.
  • Who knew that Wendell was into scrapbooking.
  • We welcomed Wood River Rotarian Tommie Myers.
  • Did you catch Allen's cold?
  • Brad 1 reminded everyone to watch for the Scouting for Food bag this AM. Food pickup will be on Saturday the 18th. All food is kept locally. The benefiting pantries depend on this collection to fill holiday food needs.
  • Sandy returned just in time to corral the catsup and mustard.
  • Brad 2 will be at the Salvation Army house in Alton representing the Madison County Vets Commission on November 16th, 10AM-4PM. He will be taking applications for holiday assistance to MadCo vets in need. That is the same day that the SA will be distributing 500 free turkeys.
  • SAA Lindsey and bag guy Chris 2 collected a $ from everyone not in the house the previous Thursday. Rick, Brad 1 and Joe each had an announcement. Trivia topics included:cows, Hawaiian Punch, Croatia and colonial seafood. Sherry offered to fine every non-female. Lindsey thought it was a great idea. Not everyone agreed, mostly the men.
  • Don't forget that the Veterans plaza dedication is today at 11AM, Main and Shamrock Streets.
  • Mark 2 indicated that the interest in Salvation Army bell ringing is so strong that he has added a couple of shifts, with the option of adding more. He attended the recent kick-off breakfast where it was announced that 300 of the 1700 available Riverbend time slots had been filled. Since the local SA no longer pays anyone to staff the bell ringing sites, any time slot not covered by a volunteer is left vacant.
  • Lori is looking for three more shirt orders. You received an email on Thursday  with the details.
  • If you know someone who would like to receive a Christmas flower, let Lori know.
  • The serving line featured well roasted beef, baked tater planks, g-beans, rolls, salad and cookies.
  • The Turkey Fund ended the day with $267. If you would like to write a donation check, make it payable to Operation Blessing. The final day for contributions will be this coming Thursday. Thanks for your generous support.
  • Our Christmas gathering will be the evening of December 14th. We will gather at the Bluff City Grill on Broadway. Time? TBA.
  • Our Winter Wonderland date has been set for Sunday December 10th, 5-9PM. Online signup will be available soon.
  • The 50-50 $63 jackpot was passed on twice by visiting Rotarian Tommie. Mark 1 took the scratch-off and headed for the door.
  • Opening duties were performed by Patty, Chris 1 and  Dave.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

Building peace in Colombia

By Ana Laura Zavala Guillen, 2011-13 Rotary Peace Fellow at the University of Bradford

Over the last three years, as a doctoral researcher, I have been studying the loss of territory by San Basilio del Palenque, a town located in the Colombian Caribbean, due to the armed conflict, business developments, state demarcations and the war on drugs. San Basilio is considered the last Colombian Palenque, communities built by runaway slaves during the 17th century as shelters.

Land grabs
As a human rights lawyer, my main aim for my research is to serve as evidence that the community can use in their claims against land grabs. On 15 June this year, I arrived in the town of San Basilio del Palenque, just in time for the celebrations that commemorate the Patron Saint of the community: St Basilio. I feared the high temperature and celebration preparations would prevent people from joining the seminar on The Role of the Archives in times of Peacebuilding.
