WINTER'S ARRIVAL ISSUE
January 9, 2016
NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
NEW MEMBERS, NEW BADGES
Thursday's program was presented by Ironworks Christian Ministries representative Bryan Grieve. The video is posted. Paul was working Bryan hard after the meeting selling him on the value of Rotary.
19 members made the first meeting of '16. That's good. Pat arrived at 11:44, soon to be followed by Allen and Rhonda. Both Brad's, Patty and Dave were last in. It looks like everyone's New Year's resolution was to arrive late.
Dining featured Chicken Alfredo, g-beans,bread sticks, salad, candy canes and G-chocolate cake.
The fireplace was lit. What could that possibly mean?
Allen claims to look good for being 100.
Opening duties were provided flawlessly by Sandy, Fred and Bill.
Wendell would prefer to whine for an hour.
Rhonda wasn't sure if Lori was sporting a faux tiger or leopard coat.
Sandy reported that Sherry was still in Florida. Paul wanted to know if she left her hubby in the hospital in Alton. For the record, she did not.
Dave want's everyone to bring their Illinois FOID card next week.
Everyone seems to be in a very chatty mood. Absence does make the heart grow fonder, or something like that.
Roger reported that we had just marked our 5th anniversary of meeting at Julia's. We received a Christmas card and donation from Red and Helen. A 90th birthday card was circulating for Charlie.
According to Rhonda's Linkedin message, she is now also speaking Spanish.( Insert your comment here.)
Bill and Sandy were busy working the crowd for "donations". Rick paid for a Salvation Army plug. Dave celebrated his anniversary as a club member. Do you still have your outside Christmas decorations up? Pay a fine! Did you know that the House impeaches, the Senate convicts? The Globetrotters, Bob Gibson and Bill Clinton were among the right answers.
The $57 50-50 jackpot was rejected by Bill and Randy. Pat left the scratch-off on the table.
That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
This space will be used to provide current information about club/community events
Lori was happy with the results of the poinsettia program. We thank her for serving as the event point person.
Chris was very pleased with our generosity toward our adopted family. He was able to include a $100 gift card for the family. Chris did his usual great job of gather donations and buying gifts.
There are now two basketball tournament sign-up sheets making the rounds. One is for concession donations, the other is for workers. You may also use the web portal to put your name on the worker list (Lori sent you an email on December 23rd and the January 8th with a link ). There are still several slots in need of your name. If Mark's 1 and 3 are willing to return from Florida to help, you can too! It looks like pizza may be added to the concession list.
Roger led a lively discussion about a possible fundraiser next fall. The event would cost us $4000, including a $500 non-refundable deposit. In order to maximize our success we would probably need to partner with another group and get more community involvement. He will be sending everyone information about the event so that we can discuss it at this week's meeting (Jan 14th).
When ordering from Amazon, don't forget to sign up for the 'Smile' program with our club receiving .5% of the total purchase amount. You can link via our home page (top right).
FROM THE ARCHIVES
January 11, 1990
We were breaking bread at Amelia's Restaurant. The only current member serving in a club leadership capacity was Mark 1.
The 2nd annual basketball tournament was scheduled for January 27th. Chairperson Bob Angleton told everyone that if they had a favorite candy request let concession chairperson Red Littleton know.
The program was presented by Godfrey Fire Chief Terry Ford. He would explain the new 911 system.
There would be an opportunity on February 1st for each member to voice their opinion about moving the meetings to DiRomero's Restaurant.
The officers for the 90-91 Rotary year would be Red Littleton, Mike Peterson, Mike Gray and Charlie Kunz. Bud Hotson would serve as the SAA.
Do you remember Jack Barnerd?
DATELINE:RI
In case you missed it, the January issue of the The Rotarian contains an excellent section devoted to stories about Rotarians in extraordinary circumstances. It starts on page 35.
By Gregg Alexander, Rotary Club of Bozeman Sunrise, Montana, USA
For six years now, my Rotary Club has provided home repair assistance to local residents through the Bozeman Fix-Up Festival. Giving preference to elderly and disabled homeowners, we strive to provide home improvements to low-income residents who either can’t afford them or are physically unable to complete the work themselves. The impact of this one-day event stretches far beyond just benefits to the homeowners: The festival touches many lives and brings the community together. We begin planning in January and wrap up in mid-November. We begin by developing a budget and conducting outreach to find applicants. We partner with local nonprofits to educate and identify homeowners who may be in need of assistance. We do require that they own their home and that they fall below the state of Montana’s poverty level. We publicize the project on the radio, through TV interviews, and social media marketing to drive interested people to our website, where they can fill out an application. Once the April application deadline is past, our committee members conduct interviews, go on home visits, and verify applicants’ income. Over the last five years, we’ve completed work on almost 60 homes. To read more link herehttp://bit.ly/1YUzE3p
