NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
JESSICA TALKS ABOUT RYLA

  • Our program presenter was Patti Anderson. She had a great presentation about her recent travels. The tiger sleeping in her lap is a keeper! The video has been posted.
  • 20 members were joined by 17 visitors and guests. As Chris H observed, “It might be a record attendance!”
  • Sherry, Sandy and Mark's 1 + 3 were the early arrivals. Fred, Rhonda, Paul and Dave were scraping the nacho chip basket.
  • Lunch was a Mexican Supremo spread accompanied by salad and cake.
  • All eight of our scholarship students were on hand, escorted by five school staffers. Before I go any further, how about a shout out to Erin for the fine job she does keeping track of all the scholarship activities. Very well played! The students did a great job of sharing their career plans. We wish them all great success. Erin pointed out that they receive a $100 scholarship credit for attending lunch. How can Chris L  get that deal?
  • Prez-Elect Sherry did a fine job subbing for MIA Prez Roger.
  • Can someone tell me if the cute tip box was provided by Dave? It doesn't add up in my mind. Don't forget to offer your thanks via a tip for our hard working server, Karen.
  • After Sherry beat up on the bell to open the meeting she called on Wendell, Sandy and Bill to handle opening duties.
  • One wag suggested that the young folks in the room brought the average room age down by 30 years.
  • By the way, just who has the program on May 19th?
  • Allen was back home from Indiana.
  • Wood River Rotarians Tommie, Scott and Cheryl were on hand to break bread. Perhaps they had heard about Tommie's big 50-50 last week.
  • The May issue of THE ROTARIAN has a nice article about the Jacksonville club's Ferris wheel (pp13). It's the club of Cathy Jo and Red.
  • We were also joined by our RYLA rep Jessica. She had a great time at the event and thanked us for the opportunity. You are welcome!
  •  Bill made a brief cameo as our SAA to tell us that he is no longer headed to Vienna, but is now assigned to Bethalto. Where's Waldo? Where's Bill? I'm going to look for him preaching under the big top as the Gypsy Pastor.
  • If you see ads embedded in the Ryan Hanlon video (April 7th) don't blame your favorite videographer. Since there was copyrighted music in Ryan's videos, YouTube takes the position that they can include ads. Anyone want to guess what's the most viewed East Alton Rotary program video ever?
  • Lori reported that we have already made $585 in Mania sales. She still has one packet of tickets left. The last day to submit your tickets is July 24th.
  • The meager 50-50 jackpot was preserved by Mark 3 and Lori. Fred was all about the scratch-off.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

SMILE
  • A man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool, so I gave him a glass of water.
  • I changed my password to "incorrect" so whenever I forget it the computer will say, "your password is incorrect."
  • Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
  • I'm great at multitasking-I can waste time, be unproductive and procrastinate all at once.

DATELINE:RI

2016-17 ROTARY THEME

Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do,” RI President-elect John F. Germ said, and that being a part of Rotary is a “great opportunity” to make that happen.

Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidential theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, to incoming district governors on 18 January at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

“I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better, forever through Rotary’s service to humanity,” said Germ.

Rotary members around the globe are serving humanity by providing clean water to underdeveloped communities, promoting peace in conflict areas, and strengthening communities through basic education and literacy. But none more important than our work to eradicate polio worldwide, he said.
