MARSHALING THE CHILI TROOPS
NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Patty and Sherri, representatives of the American Cancer Society, joined us on Thursday to talk about the organization. Patty provided the backstory. The organization was established in 1916 and it's the largest research funder outside of the federal government. 80% of its budget funds this research and supports its other ongoing programs, such as the Road to Recovery for breast cancer patients. Sherri shared her personal story and told us about the variety of fund raisers that benefit the ACS.
Our Christmas party is slated for December 21st. We need a host. Might that be you?? If you are interested let Prez Rodney or LoriP know, ASAP.
A huge thanks to MarkSm for chairing our Chili Dinner event yesterday, held inside for the first time.Thanks also to our energetic crew, from setup to tear down. Let's not forget to thank our ticket sellers, well done! Since we went to press before the game we can't report if Taylor Swift attended the game.

The slide right in crew included Prez Rodney, BradL, ChrisH, BradP and PaulH.
The Turkey Fund jar began circulating on Thursday. $46 was collected. It will be circulating weekly. All donations will be given to our friends at Operation Blessing. Checks should be made payable to Operation Blessing.
JoeS announced that SherryT and SandyS have been added to our foundation board. Scholarship interviews for RHS have been scheduled for November 1st, 9AM. If you would like to assist let Joe know.

21 members were in the house to dine on Italian beef, Rotary g-beans, rolls, salad, mixed fruit and cookies.
Last in included PaulH @ 12:15, up to his old last one in trick, BradP @ 12:10 (after dodging the aforementioned sports traffic), CoryG and ChrisH.
The $146 jackpot was once again unclaimed. This week by BradP and CoryG. BillP won the scratch-off.

The Athabasca Glacier is part of the Columbia Icefield — the largest icefield in the Canadian Rockies, which spans the continental divide in Canada’s Banff and Jasper National Parks. Located about 60 miles outside of Jasper, the glacier is easily accessible from the Icefields Parkway, and guided tours offer its many visitors the chance to traverse right onto it. Although Athabasca has retreated significantly over the past century, it still covers an impressive area of more than two square miles and measures nearly 1,000 feet at its thickest.

The EA club heard a presentation from SIUE Political Science department chair Andrew Theising about his 10,000 piece collection of St. Louis memorabilia.
The WR club met outside at the Rotary Pavilion in Belk Park.
The first of the 22 EA members to arrive at Julia's were AllenH, MarkSp and LoriP. Last in were PaulH and ChrisH.
AlanaY was looking for cardboard boxes to be be used on the Halloween parade float. DonnaK was looking for candy and $ donations for the event.
RHS Junior Rotarians Jacob Smith and Niah Bevolo enjoyed their box lunch @ Belk.
MarkV reported that the scholarship plaques have been returned to both high schools.
DonnaK was pushing sales for the Cash Raffle.
SAA BillP had trouble stumping EA members with his trivia Q's.
JohnP escorted a group of energetic EA-WR Interact Cub members to the WR meeting.
SandyS and SherryT took advantage of a Growth Association sponsored Wings 'N Wheels flight to take some sky photos.
GeorgeT was the upcoming meeting program chair.
LoriP and SandyS missed the opportunity to claim the $98 50-50 jackpot.
PattiA was offering various options for Rotary logo clothing.

Rotary scholar transforms lives through public health

Vanuatu is a small island nation in the South Pacific, comprising approximately 300,000 people spread across 83 islands. It has natural beauty and tourist appeal. Yet residents often have difficulty accessing quality health care. Reaching medical facilities often requires hours of boat travel, and even then, there is a shortage of healthcare professionals.
Vanuatu is also susceptible to natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, volcanic eruptions, and the effects of climate change. All of these impact residents’ health. When a cyclone struck in March, the capital was without water and power causing waterborne diseases to spread in the humid climate and among close-knit family units.
As a 2020-21 Rotary Scholar with a master’s degree in International Health, I work in the World Health Organization’s office in Vanuatu assisting the ministry of health in improving access to quality healthcare. I help with a community-based public health program that trains members of the community to serve as primary healthcare workers. The aim is to enable residents to receive prompt emergency care or basic treatment near their homes, eliminating the need for lengthy boat rides. It is similar to the role that community volunteers play as frontline health workers in the fight to eradicate polio. To continue reading link herehttps://rb.gy/odl9f
