MISSY ACCEPTS BOTY AWARD
NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
On Thursday Rustic Roots owner Missy Yates was with us to accept our Business of the Year award from MarkSm. She was very appreciative (and very deserving). Missy spent a few minutes talking about her business that is now seven years old. The store features home decor items and the work of local artists. She added an event space in 2019 that seats 100. Her commitment to the community is exemplary. When her grandfather, Dick Bell, died in 2012 she was committed to keeping his building in the family. She related a story about keeping the orange that some Rotarian (we guess) had placed in Dick's casket. FYI-Dick and Max Emery were the long time organizers of the Wood River Fruit Sale. (Both of these men were great guys and super Rotarians, it was my pleasure to know both of them-RH)
Early arrivals included MarkSm, RodC and AllenH.
"Big Bell" BillP wielded the gavel in the absence of Prez Rodney.
The slide right in crowd was well representedon Thursday-WendellR, BradL, BillP, MikeK and ChrisH.
GeorgeM made what made have been the shortest meeting visit in the history of Rotary, less than 15 seconds. Let's call him a super scooter.
If you are holding sold Baseball Mania tix, give LoriP the ticket numbers ASAP. The contest starts Sunday (tomorrow).
The Paul Harris Fellows met after the meeting and made a selection. Will ?? come on down!
Happy Birthday to you-DonnaK-today, JohnP-23rd, CoryG-25th and HenryS-27th.
Opening duties were smoothly covered by ChrisH, MarkSm and MarkA.
21 dampish members dined on BBQ pork chops, super-cheezy taters, rolls, salad and cake. FYI-It looks like drinks will now be self-serve from a table near the food line.

SAA PattiA collected a $ from those who failed to reach out to someone during the past week. Happy Fines were paid by BillP and LeonardB for recent nuptial benchmarks, 43 years (Brenda) and 38 (Fran) respectively.
50-50 opportunities were afforded TylerL and JohnP. The pot rolls. JohnP also took home the scratch-off.

Where did the Pony Express begin and end?

Omaha, Nebraska, to Portland, Oregon
Also known as Leavenworth & Pike's Peak Express Company, the Pony Express was the fastest letter-delivering service of its time. Letters could make the 1,800-mile journey in just 10 days — from the company’s starting point in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California. Spurred by the California Gold Rush and the Oregon Trail — and the influx of migrants out West — the Pony Express operated for about 18 months between 1860 and 1861. But a transcontinental telegraph line was authorized by Congress in 1860, soon rendering the short-lived operation obsolete.

District Governor Norm Jones visited the WR club. He spoke about the current Rotary theme-Engage Rotary, Change Lives and encouraged everyone to make a Rotary Foundation donation. EA members heard a presentation by Jacksonville Rotarian Cathy Wahl.
Past Assistant District Governors DaveA and LeonardB made a ceremonial passing of ADG banner to new ADG Lori Ehlers.
TommieM, along with 23 EA members, dined on Julia's taco bar.
Big thanks were offered to DaveA, AlanaY and JohnP for their assistance with the very successful Back 2 School Bash.
RodC was the solo EA scooter.
JohnP provided the musical interlude at the WR meeting.
RickH was looking for Program of the Year ballots, RhondaB was searching for Soap Box Derby crossing guards and PaulH requested baskets for the Quarter Auction.
DonnaK paid a Happy Fine.
MarkSp left $50 on the table.
SAA JeanK fined CherylM for sitting with her "usual group".
AND THE WINNER IS...
If you are a regular attendee at our weekly confabs you may have thought to yourself that certain members seem to have their 50-50 tickets drawn more often than others. You are not wrong! A very unscientific review of data from this past year found that LoriP had her ticket pulled at least 13 times. AllenH is not far behind with at least 10 winners. Other members who have had at least five opportunities to claim the jackpot include-MarkA, PattiA, RickH,RobinK, JohnP, BillP and TylerL. (John and Tyler scored again on Thursday). Now, how many have actually claimed the jackpot in the past 12 months? Good question.

THE POWER OF GOODNESS

In my first year as a Rotary public image coordinator, I dreamed of having a video competition to tell Rotary stories and let communities all over the world see the lasting change Rotary makes. Clubs and districts could let the world know about Rotary and our impact by sharing these inspiring videos within their communities, on social media, and elsewhere. I had in mind something that would leave its mark on the hearts and minds of Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike.
When I shared this idea with the Zone 21B assistant Rotary public image coordinators, the team was keen to make the video competition a reality. We drafted criteria, chose a title (“The Power of Goodness”), made a flier, and sent invitations to the district governors, club presidents, secretaries, and district and club public image coordinators.
I’ve always believed that constant communication is the key to success, and so our zone’s public image team has had constant communication about the competition with the corresponding districts and clubs for the past three years. We emphasized the importance of promoting Rotary to the public. We sent monthly emails, fliers, and promotional videos to inspire them to participate.
In our first year, we had 58 entries. In Rotary Year 2021-2022, I encouraged public image coordinator Mykola Stebljanko of Zone 21A to join us, and we had 55 entries. This past year, due to the circumstances in Ukraine, the forest fires in Greece and Turkey, and the devastating earthquake in Turkey, we had 32 Rotary and Rotaract club entries from 10 of 16 districts from Zones 21A and 21B.
