                    APRIL 28, 2018

              NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE

                  EA-WR STUDENTS
  • The program was focused on our scholarship and RYLA students. It was a full house, plenty of youthful energy.
  • 20 members (as best as I could cypher) were in the house.  Rotary g-beans returned to grace the buffet table. Our entree was sliced roast beast au jus. Also included were sweet potato mash-up, rolls, salad and cobbler.
  • Prez Bill was AWOL. Did anyone see him and Patty at the Cardinal game? duty called!
  • Allen, Darren and Mark3 all arrived at the same time. Last to arrive included Brad1, Rod, Paul Dave.
  • The Roxana students arrived just in time to miss the enlightening pee-pee discussion.
  • Paul had high praise and much respect for his mentor, Clarence Decker. (Rim shot).
  • Rhonda  came out of the closet (her words) to cover for Bill.
  • There was some concern about the continuing absence of Mark1. No worries, he's off on a Rhineland vacay.
  • Queenie recognized Lori, Matt and Paul for their recent birthdays. Lori doesn't want to be sung to, Matt was absent so Paul got the off-key version of the birthday song.
  • Our Baseball Mania net to date is $285. Don't forget, buy 5 e-tickets, you get one free.
  • It was so warm in the room that Allen had a
  • men-apause flash.
  • Mark3 would like to put a golf team together for the Alton-Godfrey Rotary event next month. You in?
  • Queenie dispensed with her regular SAA duties. At the behest of the crowd, she tossed out a softball question and Randy scored an assist with his Fernando Q.
  • Dick was off 'burning brush' on his Calhoun estate. Wink, wink.
  • what kind of story was Dave spinning to those defenseless students?
  • The 50-50 opportunities went to Paul and Rick. Queenie received the scratch-off. The jackpot is $65 +/-
  • Opening duties were performed by Randy, Paul and Mark3
  • That's all from here, have a fine and dry weekend.

THE OPPORTUNITY THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

By Jireh Mabamba
Sometimes, all you need is a chance – that one opportunity of a lifetime. Rotary gave me that chance.
I grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where human life has little value. Children are taken from their families and forced into the army, women are raped daily, and men are killed in front of their loved ones. Massacre is the norm. The only way to survive this brutal environment is to flee the country, and when I was nine, that’s what my family and I did.
We moved to South Africa, a country that was foreign to us on so many levels. The language and the currency were different. We knew no one. Of the few people that showed us kindness, most were Rotarians. They came forward and helped us when we needed it most. At that time, I knew nothing about Rotary. In 2007, Rotary Youth Exchange students from Australia, France, Germany, and the U.S. came to my school for their year abroad and it was through them that I truly became interested in Rotary. SMILE
-My neighbors are listening to great music. Whether they like it or not.
-It is important to make breaks between individual exercises. I personally stick to breaks of about 3-4 years.
-Hearing voices in your head is normal. Listening to them is quite common. Arguing with them – acceptable. It is only when you lose that argument that you get in real trouble.
-Organized people are simply too lazy to search for stuff.
-A jellyfish has existed as a species for 500 million years, surviving just fine without a brain. That gives hope to quite a few people.
-I am nobody. Nobody is perfect. I am perfect.
-As long as cocoa beans grow on trees, chocolate is fruit to me.
-There are people who are a living proof that total brain failure does not always lead to physical death.
-I’m sorry, I have neither the patience, nor the coloring crayons to explain this to you.
-Spring is here! I'm so thrilled I wet my plants.
