Two representatives with The Backstoppers Inc. joined us on Thursday and provided an overview of the services they provide first responders injured or killed while on duty. Larry Gardner and Dan Hannon told us that the organization was founded in 1959 and currently serves 95 families in 25 (soon to be 28) metropolitan St. Louis area counties, spending $2.5 million per year. When a first responder is injured or killed, the family immediately receives $10,000 to spend on current needs. In the event of death, the surviving family members receive broad financial support from the organization. Basically, The Backstoppers will cover virtually all family expenses. What they are willing to provide is impressive.
Mark and Tammy, Two potential Rotarians, joined us as guests on Thursday.

The Rotary sponsored (Alton-Godfrey and the two Riverbend clubs) National Day of Prayer gathering will be held on Thursday May 5th, 8AM, at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Alton. BillP and JohnP will be among those offering prayers. All are welcome to attend. The cost? Priceless! When John asked Bill what he should say, Bill's response was "Keep it short." Amen!

Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas is the only U.S. national park to encompass a full mountain range within its bounds: the Chisos Mountains. The 800,000-acre park represents the largest protected area within the Chihuahuan Desert, which surrounds the mountain range. With the highest summit of Emory Peak rising 7,835 feet, the Chisos stretch for 20 miles from Panther Junction to Punta de la Sierra. The mountain range may have gotten its name from the Spanish word for spells (“hechizos”) or from a Native American word for “spirit” or “ghost.”

MarkS told his fellow EA members that he was not among those paying $60 for opening day parking. PaulG fined all WR members not wearing red in honor of opening day. He was also pushing tickets for Rotary Day at the Ballpark. JohnP paid a Happy Fine recognizing opening day at Wrigley.
AllenH was on hand at the EA meeting humming the tune "Back Home Again in Indiana".
EA-WR Junior Rotarians Blake Marks and Haley Kerpan broke bread with the WR members. Sophomores Bekah Null and Rachel Staten would be attending the RYLA event.
DarrenC was sporting his kevlar vest at the EA meeting. Tough crowd?
CherylM and ScottL paid Happy Fines at the WR meeting.
ErinP told her fellow EA members that she planned to buy the Citizens Building as soon as she receives her Publishers Clearing House check.
MikeK donated his Trivia Night $274 50-50 winnings back to the WR club.
RhondaB told the EA club that she was hopeful for a grant to support the Wann historic marker.
SteveD was welcomed back to the WR meeting after his extended absence.
RandyN was drafted to serve as the EA SAA.
WR members LeonardB, MikeK and ScottL would be attending the upcoming District Assembly.
MarkA announced at the EA meeting that the Roxana Habitat for Humanity house was complete.
ScottL told the WR members that the deadline to apply for the Rotary scholarships was April 15th. The awards are named in honor of Jim Stewart (RHS) and Max Emery (EA-WR).
TommieM won the EA 50-50 jackpot of $168.
VirgilM happily shared the news with fellow EA members that his skin cancer treatments had ended.

Nathan Kim gets up early on Mondays and Wednesdays and dresses in his favorite clothes — his work uniform.
The 20-year-old arrives at the YMCA in Northbrook, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, USA, where he clocks in, puts on an apron, and sets up chairs and tables at Café Voca, a coffee shop in the lobby.
He and his colleague Daniel prepare the coffee machine and then they’re ready to open, greeting guests as they arrive.
“I enjoy working at Café Voca,” Kim says, adding, “I make coffee and hot chocolate.” After serving customers, he says, he tells them, “Thank you, and have a nice day.”
Kim is taking part in a job training program for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities — a group that is employed at a significantly lower rate than the labor force as a whole. At Café Voca, which is a project of the Rotary Club of Chicagoland Korean-Northbrook, he and three other autistic youths have been learning to handle the responsibilities and developing the social skills that they’ll need for other jobs.
In putting the project together, club members looked at statistics from the U.S. Labor Department, which show that in 2019, about 20 percent of people with a disability were employed, as compared with more than 60 percent of people without a disability (employment rates for both groups fell during the COVID-19 pandemic). The Rotary members also learned that people with autism often face additional challenges finding work because of behavioral effects that can be associated with autism.
In the United States, many high schools offer transitional programs that include life skills and job training for students with disabilities after they graduate. But for immigrants — who may have language barriers, limited social circles, or what Kim’s mother, Hyeok Choi, calls a “cultural tendency to cope passively” with a child’s disability — finding information about such programs can be a challenge.
