Look for your next Rotary Banner issue on September 5th.
It was good to see Andrew and ChrisH for their first face to face meeting return.
Happy Birthday to Sherry...today!
We dined on salisbury steak, whipped taters, mexicorn, rolls, salad, cake and cookies.
Pre-nooners included Allen, Dick, Bill and MarkS. Paul arrived @ 12:17, after Rhonda, Cory and BradP.
Our merger committee met after Thursday's meeting to be briefed by Prez Chris and to decide what our next step will be. It looks like the Bethalo club may also be interested in combining with us and WR. Prez Chris will have more info at our next meeting.
If you are looking for Sherry and Prez Chris, check under the bus.
MarkV has been in touch with the Salvation Army about bell ringing. They have not made a final decision about their plans. Mark suggested that if ringing happens, that we should do our regular all-day Saturday shift(s) and pick up some additional evening shifts during the Christmas season in order to help during these unprecedented times. Your thoughts?
Some club member milestones-Emily 2 years, Virgil-13, Rod-38 and Paul-39. Congrats to all!
When we resume inviting speakers, BradP has agreed to provide the technical support to allow the speaker to participate via a Zoom session if they prefer
Emily wryly observed that Virgil did not prepare her for how to deal with a pandemic. She did receive high praise from Joe for her groundwork in preparing the schools to reopen.
Darren told us about the back to school program that the police department is sponsoring today at the rec center.
Lori has Football Mania tickets. Winning opportunities begin on October 29th. Sherry encouraged everyone to sell/buy the tickets so we don't leave a big winner sitting on Lori's desk.
Congrats to Rhonda who's granddaughter was born early Thursday morning.
Joe spent a few minutes briefing us on how things are going around the village. He pointed out that Fischer Lumber, Community Seed & Feed and Sever's Market had their best quarters ever.
Sherry served as the alternate SAA and Bill collected $$ from everyone. Trivia topics included fish, beaver, planets, movies and war. We nailed 4 out of 5.
Bill reminded everyone that our Winter Wonderland date is set for December 9th, assuming the event is happening.
Opening duties were performed by Paul, ChrisH and Bill
While we wait for the 50-50 card deck to return Joe and Allen had their numbers drawn. Wendell claimed the scratch-off for the second week running.
Have a fine and dry weekend and stay safe. Ciao!

PEACEBUILDING DURING A TIME OF UPHEAVAL
By Elaine Pratley, Rotary Peace Fellow
This has not been an easy year. I attended my first virtual funeral because of local lockdowns due to COVID-19. Friends have lost jobs and loved ones, and the news about the global recession remains bleak. And to think that it was only three months ago when I thought the Australian bushfires were the biggest disaster to hit us this year! I feel the word "upheaval" would be an understatement, but I cannot think of a better word.
As a peacebuilder, conflict is at the core of my business. Peacebuilders do not consider conflict as inherently bad but recognize its potential for growth and positive change.
Nevertheless, I find it hard to foster hope and avoid despondency in the face of growing divisions over issues like Black Lives Matter and the resurgence in nationalist movements. How can one not be politically depressed given how readily our politicians take advantage of the pandemic to dehumanize others in order to score a few more points in the polls?
Perhaps the lesson to take from 2020 is that we need each other. Our lives are inextricably linked whether we like it or not. Every decision we make, no matter how passive or conscious, has ethical consequences, from how we respond to the lockdown restrictions, whether we choose to wear masks, whether we hoard food or buy locally, and how we respond to structural violence that benefits us.
Thankfully, I had the pleasure of being part of the committee that organized the Rotary Peace Fellowship Alumni Association’s inaugural Global Cyber Peace Conference on 27 June. Despite being a global event, we were all linked by our shared experiences of navigating life with COVID-19. My role infused me with renewed hope and joy when I saw firsthand what can be achieved when a group of passionate people come together to build peace. The global lockdown provided us with the impetus to redesign a conference that was not only truly global but also accessible to those in more geographically isolated regions. The events of 2019 and 2020, moreover, made the need to rethink a world grounded in peace both critical and timely.
