         SPRITZ BEFORE YOU PLATE

  • After an almost five month hiatus, we returned to Julia's on Thursday to resume  our  "new normal" meetings. It felt good to return and see a few new faces we had not seen during our three week restart at JJ"s. 15 members were in the house. The early arrivals included Darren, Alex, Lori and MarkS. Post-nooners were represented by BradL, Rhonda and BradP.
  • We sat four to a table. The buffet line had hand sanitizer (that did not smell as nice as Sherry's work version). A few members wore masks when not eating. It's all a work in progress.
  • After Lori put her glasses on and realized that the Rotary g-beans were not fried chicken, we all dined on ham, cheezy taters, pasta, salad, cake and cookies.
  • BradL covered for ChrisL at the podium, ready to cover the bases after his four month end of term vacay.
  • Rhonda had  the most colorful top and MarkS wore the most interesting themed mask.
  • Alex was happy to see Sandy and Sherry and told us that two of our scholarship students had requested tuition funds to attend McKendree and LCCC. In lieu of a physical appearance, he has asked the students to draft a short recap about their career path that Alex can read at an upcoming meeting.
  • I had to talk with a person at my bank last week. Her business card listed her title as "Universal Banker" Does that mean she deals with a galaxy far far away? Can one of our bankers enlighten me about this job title?
  • Lori announced that Football Mania will replace the baseball version.
  • If someone leave you a bag of tomatoes on your stoop, it may be Wendell, the "tomato fairy".
  • A birthday shoutout to Prez Chris and Randy.
  • Alex came prepared with trivia Q's, the members were ready. We went 4 for 4!!
  • Opening duties were performed by BradL, MarkV and BradP
  • Wendell, AKA as Virgil, drew the 50-50 tickets. Wendell and Paul need to hang on to their tickets for next week. Sandy didn't have that problem with the scratch-off. She won $3. Way to Go!
  • Have a fine and dry weekend and stay safe. Ciao!

What is the least rainy state in the U.S.?
Arizona
Utah
New Mexico
Nevada
Nevada takes the top spot as the driest state with an average yearly rainfall of only 9.5 to 10.3 inches. One key reason for this is that moisture from the Pacific Ocean is blocked by the Sierra Nevada mountain range. For many residents, major sources of water include the Colorado River Basin and Lake Mead, the largest man-made reservoir in the country. Located in the extremely dry Mojave Desert, Lake Mead owes its existence to the impressive Hoover Dam.

DATELINE:RI

Supporting the environment becomes an area of focus
Rotary has a new area of focus — supporting the environment — after a unanimous vote by The Rotary Foundation Trustees and the RI Board of Directors. Rotary has long supported activities that sustain the environment, and in the past five years we have allocated $18 million to such projects through global grants tied to other areas of focus. Adding the environment as a distinct cause formalizes our longtime community-based efforts and will give Rotary members more ways to increase our global impact and expand our reach.
The Foundation is developing the eligibility criteria for grants in this area of focus and will have more information beginning in October. It will begin accepting global grant applications focused on the environment on 1 July 2021.
