           ADIÓS FRED

  • Paul presented a very interesting program about his recent visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany. The story is a very chilling one. He reminded us about  former Rotarian Charlie Kunz's military unit being the first to liberate this camp, at age 19. (There's no video of Paul's presentation.)
  • Sherry was off to D.C. for "business". Bill served as our replacement Prez. For all his hard work, he plans to reward himself with a trip to Busch next Thursday afternoon. Rick will be serving as SAA.
  • Mark 1 returned from Minnesota with a bunch of crappy crappie fishing stories.
  • This past Thursday Lori sent all members an email update on former long time member Red Littleton. He is recovering from a fall and very much appreciates any get well cards or notes. They can be sent to him @ 2140 Straw Crossing Road, Jacksonville, IL 62650.
  • There were plenty of late arrivals that swelled our member count to 25. A very late Patty was joined by Brad 1, Roger, Matt and Cory.
  • Dining options included baked and/or BBQ drenched chicken, mashed taters 'n gravy, mexicorn, mixed veggies, salad and a Twin Peaks homage dessert-3 types of mighty fine pie.
  • Lindsey has agreed to serve as our SAA next year. Better start gettin' on her good side!
  • Allen, Bill, Wendell and Lori represented the early vanguard.
  • We wish Fred all the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his life...in New Mexico. He's been a real asset to the club during his three year tenure.
  • It seems as though Rodney Palmer had his lunch interrupted by the fire at Beall. Timing is everything.
  • Lockhaven has reopened.
  • Joe had to Shout for his lunch.
  • SAA Bill recruited Lindsey to take care of the financial duties. Mark 3 reported that Habitat will be building a home at 429 Lincoln in East Alton. Look for a work day this fall. He also shared the news that his oldest daughter recently received her PhD from UVA. The trivial Q's all revolved around East Alton members Mark 1, Sandy, Mark 3 and Brad 1.
  • Paul just got the memo that Sandy is Sherry's auntie. This moment of Zen compelled him to observe "that explains a lot".
  • Don't forget to put the Installation Dinner on your calendar. It's June 29th.
  • We have made $604 in Baseball Mania sales so far. Five members have sold/bought all their tickets.
  • Opening duties were provided by Paul, Matt and Bill. Bill's invocation was unusually short.
  • Lindsey and Fred missed their chance to win the  50-50 using a brand new roll of tickets. Randy uncovered $2 on his scratch-off. By the way, what's up with all three of these members sitting side-by-side-by-side? Was ticket-puller Paul part of this?   (Insert your conspiracy theory here.)
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry Memorial Day weekend.

DATELINE:RI

Rotary uses virtual reality to inspire others

Rotary is working with Google’s virtual reality team to offer an experience that showcases the impact of compassion to a global audience.

We’re producing a three-minute virtual reality film that emphasizes the two themes of polio and peace, and how Rotary’s work to eradicate the disease is increasing stability across the world.

Through the power of virtual reality, viewers will follow the extraordinary journey of a child whose world has been torn apart by conflict. The film will immerse viewers in this child’s world, and they’ll experience for themselves the impact that small acts of compassion, protection, and kindness can have on others.

We’ll premiere the film on 13 June at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It will be widely released in time for World Polio Day on 24 October.

This isn’t Rotary’s first experience with virtual reality. With support from the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, Rotary premiered its first virtual reality film, “I Dream of an Empty Ward,” in October 2016. In that film, viewers visit India, which has been polio-free since 2011, to follow Alokita, a young woman paralyzed by the disease as a child.

Traveling through the streets of Delhi, viewers get a close look at life in India and what’s being done to keep the country polio-free. And, through a visit to India’s only polio ward, at St. Stephen’s Hospital, they witness Alokita’s triumphant first steps after 11 years.   Here's a link to the video https://youtu.be/VDcirP_fejA
