NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
A WINNER TODAY?
  • Matt gave a vocational presentation for his first program. Did you know that he is a native of Bunker Hill?
  • Sherry, Sandy, Allen and Virgil represented the front of the meeting conga line. Rhonda, Bill and Matt represented the back of the line. Chris1 was unusually early. We all got to spend more quality time with him.
  • By the way, Dick was here for the 2nd week in a row. Two of our meeting stalwarts, Lori and Mark 1 were both MIA.
  • After last week's fried chicken feast, the buffet line offered a vegan spread. Soup (cream of... X2) and salad (lettuce and fruit) were the mainstays. There were a couple of apple dishes for dessert. What's up with the g-beans?
  • 13 red pick-em-up trucks populated the parking lot. Marathon oil must have received some sort of deep red discount.
  • The fireplace was up and running. Some sort of winter omen?
  • Wendell was back, but he will soon return to sea.
  • Opening duties were provided by Fred, Virgil and Bill.
  • Our solo guest was Sherry's mum, Sharon, in town for her semi-annual visit. She was thankful that she was able to avoid the wrath of Matthew last week. She recommends the crab cakes at Phillip's Seafood Restaurant. Yummy!
  • Sandy was busy showing off the bull her father just bought. Quite a handsome guy. We're sure he will be popular with the cows.
  • Where was the butter, honey?
  • It seems as though Sandy chose last Thursday to host an employee appreciation lunch. Sherry wanted to know why not one of the other four weekdays?
  •  Brad had a fond recollection about Brazilian exchange students in the 90's who fell in love with American candy.
  • Bill will be looking for a date during the first two weeks of December to volunteer at the Winter Wonderland event. The consensus was that the December 22nd date would not work. Will Allen serve as Santa?
  • Fred indicated that the basketball tournament date has been set for February 11th. Shirt sponsorships are available at the $60 and $120 level. Previous sponsors will automatically be included unless you opt out.
  • Rhonda reminded everyone that the Christmas party will be held on December 15th at the Alton Sports Tap. She promised a great meal.
  • SAA Bill drafted Fred as his "Bag Lad". With Officer Blake Snyder's burial taking place as he spoke, he suggested that we take up a collection the next two meeting to support the BackStoppers organization. Roger took a moment to provide more detail about the organization. Put your donation in the badge box lid. The trivia Q's covered a palindrome, ABA, White House and 7-up.
  • The Turkey Fund is now at $82.
  • Sandy and Bill drew the cards, Rick the scratch-off. The $119 jackpot rolled.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

Supporting communities, from homes to homework

ShelterBox specialises in delivering the essentials people need in rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of a disaster. This usually means providing emergency shelter, such as sturdy tents, or the tools to repair damaged homes, but sometimes devastation spreads much further than homes, disrupting vital services like schools and education.

ShelterBox’s range of aid also includes SchoolBoxes with essential supplies for teachers as well as school equipment for 50 children. Simple but very effective, a tin of blackboard paint and boxes of chalk can be used to transform any flat surface into a focus for learning. And the solar and wind-up powered radios included in every box mean that teachers can broadcast educational lessons wherever there is reception.

The SchoolBoxes also include activity packs containing materials such as notebooks, coloured pencils and other stationery that not only enable children to continue their studies, but give them the opportunity to play and express themselves too. These activity packs come in distinctive yellow school bags which children can take home with them, meaning that although they may have lost many of their belongings due to disaster, they have something of their own to keep and look after. Their pride in these possessions, so ordinary to our own children, brings a sense of joy amid the hardship.  To continue reading, link here http://bit.ly/2c6ooz0
