  • Joe introduced Alton Works Redevelopment  Company representative (and former Marquette High School catcher for Joe's baseball team) Nick Schrenk. Alton Works is John Simmons' plan for revitalizing Alton's city center. The plan is to focus on three districts: Grand Entertainment, Jacoby Arts and Broadway Makers. The overall costs are projected to be around $100 million and add 500 residents to downtown Alton. The Grand Theater rehab is currently job 1. Nick shared a video about the project and answered several questions from the peanut gallery.
  • The cold and windy day provided the opportunity for the first snow bird chatter.
  •  Our 24 members in the house was a mighty improvement over the previous week's 13. Allen, MarkA, Paul and Rod were the early birds. End of the liners included BradP, Rhonda, MarkV and ChrisH.
  • Congrats to Patty as she celebrates six years as a club member.
  • We welcomed guest (and potential member?)  Laura from Zion Luther School in Bethalto. She was proud to announce that her father was a Rotarian.
  • MarkA announced that he wished he wasn't here. We think his reaction was more toward the harsh weather than the company he was keeping. He did announce his target date to decamp to Tampa.
  • Good luck to Rhonda's Shells and Emily's Bulldogs as they hit the road to play in today's first round of the IHSA football playoffs.
  • December 10th is our date for the Winter Wonderland. You in?  Who will be chosen for the honor of playing SC?? Look for the sign-up sheet shortly.
  • Delicious fried chicken was front and center on Thursday. Sides included boiled red taters and boiled corn on the 1/2 cob, rolls, salad and spooky dessert.
  • Several members had announcements, some paid.
  • Dave was the only member spied sporting halloween accessories, a neat tie. MarkS' orange Illini sweater does not count. All the band wagoners start appearing after a couple of wins in the Big10.
  • Bring a veteran day is this Thursday (the 7th). Please invite a vet to join us for lunch. Let Prez Brad or Lori know by Wednesday. The program will feature a presentation by folks from the VA.
  • The Turkey Fund is now at $225. All donations will be given to Operation Blessing to purchase Thanksgiving food items. If you are donating via check, make it payable to Operation Blessing.
  • Opening duties were handled by Rick,ChrisH and Dave.
  • It doesn't appear that there's much to be said about home field advantage in the World Series. MarkS donated his "bet the field" winnings to the Turkey Fund.
  • SAA Chris recruited Alex to handle lugmeister duties. Not here last week? Pay a $. World Series trivia covered a pantheon of legendary baseball names-Mantle, Larsen, Stengel, McCarthy, Ford.
  • Anyone interested in visiting Wendell in his Columbian palace? Don't forget the ice!
  • The $114 50-50 jackpot was studiously avoided by BradP, and Paul. MarkS was looking for his own jackpot from the scratch-off.
  • That's it, have a fine and dry weekend. Ciao!

Standing at 1,100 feet and occupying an entire city block, the Wilshire Grand Center in Los Angeles, California, is not only the tallest building in the city and state, but also the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. Originally opened in 1952 as the Hotel Statler, it was a Los Angeles landmark for the next 59 years and hosted guests including former President John F. Kennedy and Pope John Paul II. It would not be until the early 2010s that the idea of turning the old hotel into a new landmark of Los Angeles and icon of the 21st century would occur. Officially opened on June 23, 2017, the Wilshire Grand Center today serves a mixed use building

WORLD POLIO DAY UPDATE

By Ryan Hyland

Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) are celebrating a major milestone this World Polio Day: confirmation that a second type of the wild poliovirus has been eradicated, which is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of a polio-free world.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced the historic feat in a video address during Rotary’s Global Online Update on 24 October. He said an independent commission of health experts certified the global eradication of the type 3 strain, which hasn't been detected anywhere in the world since Nigeria identified a case of polio that it caused in November 2012. The type 2 strain was certified as eradicated in 2015.
“That leaves just wild poliovirus type 1,” Tedros said. He also commended Rotary’s long fight against polio. “Everything you [Rotary] have done has brought us to the brink of a polio-free world.”
Tedros balanced the good news with a note of caution, saying that the biggest enemy of global eradication is complacency. He encouraged Rotary members to redouble their efforts. To continue reading, link here https://bit.ly/2Py6nMg

Six retired guys are playing poker at George's house when Burt loses $300 on a single hand, clutches his chest and drops dead at the table.
George asks, "Who's going to go and tell his wife?"
They cut the deck, lowest card loses. Harry draws a two and loses. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, and not to make a bad situation any worse.
"Discreet? I'm the most discreet person you'll ever meet-discretion is my middle name. Leave it to me," he says.
He goers over to Burt's house and knocks on the door. The wife answers an asks what he wants. Harry answers, "Your husband just lost $300 and is afraid to come home. He has asked me to come and apologize." "You tell him I said to drop dead!" says his wife.
"OK, I'll go tell him," says Harry.
