LAYLA SEARCHES FOR HER RAINBOW
NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
On Thursday we welcomed four members of the Curtain's Up Theater Company to preview next month's production of TheWizard of Oz. Board President Vince and Oz Director Christie played a video of a recent rehearsal session (Lots of energy). 15 year old Layla sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow (a great voice). This is the 21st year of Curtains Up productions. It's all volunteers and they love to get the young folks involved with all aspects of the production. JohnP claims to have been a munchkin in his youth. Give me a moment to process that.
Walk right up-WendellR and LeonardB, wasting no steps or pointless conversation, walked into the room and right up to the food line. PaulH taught them well.

Opening duties were responsibility handled by Prez Rodney, BradP and MarkV.
22 members dined on Chicken Alfredo, Rotary g-beans, garlic toast, salad and cake. It was nice to have Chef Bob serving us just before he heads for Julia's exit for the final time.
Last in the house included MikeK, MarkV, JohnP and JoeS.
The congregation at BillP's temporary ministry really like him-because he's loud!
SAA PattiA drafted BillP as the lugmeister. She gave us a heads up on how to save a $ next week. Every table had the opportunity to guess the current ticket price for some recent STL concerts.
BillP advised us that August 12th marks the day that the Oiler Nation gathers for their annual pow-wow.
Tickets for the Cards-Cubs game on July 29th are still available. Proceeds benefit our district literacy program. Prez Rodney has the details.
CherylM paid a Happy Fine for her reemployment as a reading teacher in the Cahokia School district. Retirement can wait.
50-50 opportunities were squandered by WendellR and LoriP. Lori did, however, win the scratch-off.

When you visit Colorado’s stunning Red Rocks, you might see why the state’s name was derived from the Spanish word for “colored red.” However, the state’s name actually originated with the Colorado River, which explorers named for the reddish-brown silt the water carried down the mountains. After gold was discovered at Pikes Peak, the name was chosen for the new Colorado territory established in 1861. Colorado became the 38th state in the Union fifteen years later.

Prior to May 2023, my main construction experience consisted of building an Adirondack chair 28 years ago for a Father’s Day gift.
But there I was at a Habitat for Humanity Southeastern Virginia construction site, wearing a blue hard hat and safety goggles as I carefully ran boards through a table saw. I passed the boards to other female Rotarians helping to build a house.
Kudos go to Rotary International President Jennifer E. Jones for inspiring my foray into home construction. Hearing our first female international president speak last summer at the Rotary International Convention in Houston made me ponder ways to empower other women in my club.
I’m the ninth female president of the 109-year-old Rotary Club of Norfolk, which is 70% male. I’m happy that the men and women in our club frequently work side-by-side to benefit our area food bank and other key nonprofits. And yet, inspired by Jennifer, I longed for a tangible service project led by women. Habitat’s third-annual Women Build project in southeastern Virginia was the perfect opportunity to engage female Rotarians.
Inviting Habitat’s executive director to speak at a club meeting led to us awarding a $5,000 club grant for the Women Build project in nearby Chesapeake, Virginia. Our speaker stressed that home ownership gives families stability, which leads to adults engaged in their communities and children succeeding in school and life. Since 1988, Habitat volunteers have constructed 243 homes for lower-income families in southeastern Virginia. One house each year is usually built by women. 9:06 a.m. Someone was shadowboxing from a bench.
9:10 a.m. A suspicious man in a parking lot appeared to have stolen a large dog bed from a vehicle.
10:33 a.m. Someone called the Kalispell police department asking if they wanted to pick up an “accumulation of wallets.”
