NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE
CHAT STEW
Restore Network Development Director Ashley Aim made a presentation about the Alton based organization. What started in 2009 as a way to help provided assistance to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) network of foster families morphed in 2013 to a program that helps recruit foster families and provide wrap around support. The organization now has 26 partner churches in four Illinois counties. Ashley shared that as of last week there are 595 children in foster care in Madison county. In Illinois 39% of all foster children change families at least once. There is an ongoing need for additional foster families. Can you or your place of worship help find potential foster families? Additional information can be found via this link http://www.therestorenetwork.org
Congrats to Prez Patty as she celebrates five years of club membership.
The sign-up sheet for our Salvation Army bell ringing gig at the East Alton Schnucks on December 8th, 10A-8P, is making the rounds. There's still some slots open. Direct any questions to MarkV.
We had a ton of post-noon arrivals, highlighted by Dave's 12:35 entrance. We rebounded from last week's Growth Association event attrition and wound up with 22 members on hand. Not to be found included: Ty, Darren, Nate, Matt, Virgil, Erin, DaveS, Joe, MarkS, Dick and Sherry.
Lunch featured your choice of chicken tenders or chicken teriyaki (or both), mac ' cheese, mexicorn, Rotary g-beans, rolls, salad, cake, cookies or Halloween cupcakes.
Prez Patty presented Jamie with her member badge.
The 4-way test took a beating at table #2. What started out as a reasonable discussion about the Grandpa Gang's short circuit problem descended into cross-table pot shots. One wag suggested that the problem was the presence of the "Spice Girls" (Rhonda and Sandy) At any rate, who will serve as Santa this year? Wendell's wife Deisy, Sandy or Bill? It WON'T be ChrisH! Bill assured us that a sign-up sheet for the event will be circulation shortly. Put December 12th on your calendar.
MarkA wonders how you schedule an event to start at 6PM and have no food. A good point.
Bill, Rick, Lori and Queenie all made announcements.
Queenie brought one of her coworkers as a guest.
Please invite a veteran to lunch this Thursday in appreciation for their service. The meal's on us. Let Lori know BY THIS MONDAY if you plan to bring a vet. In lieu of a formal program, each vet will be given an opportunity to introduce themself.
The Turkey Fund has grown to $236. The can will be on hand each Thursday thru November 15th (two more weeks). All donations will be given to Operation Blessing to assist with Thanksgiving meals. If you are so inclined, make your check payable to Operation Blessing.
SAA Queenie finally returned to pump up our treasury. ChrisL also returned to serve as her wingman. Not at the Captains' bash last week, pay a $. Did you vote early? No? Pay a $. Wendell got the birthday treatment (for the second time, according to him.) Trivia topics include Beverly Hills veggies, red lights, baseball and civil law.

HOW TO SPREAD POSITIVE PEACE
By Laurie Smolenski
When I learned about the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a think tank dedicated to using empirical research to better understand the drivers of peace, as a Rotary Peace Fellow in 2016, I was fascinated. The idea that peace – which often lives in a lofty realm of aspiration and emotions – could be articulated in concrete metrics, underpinned by data, and visualized through heat maps and charts was new and profoundly impactful to me.
I hadn’t yet known that the following year, Rotary and IEP would embark on a strategic partnership. As I see it, this partnership represents a critical bridge between research and action, as it will equip Rotarians working on the ground with concrete tools and frameworks to promote “Positive Peace.” Defined as the attitudes, institutions, and structures that correlate to the world’s most peaceful societies (a framework IEP has developed through statistical analysis), Positive Peace is a natural foundation for this collaboration.
