SHERRY'S PRESIDENTIAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Thursday's program was all about our Installation Dinner, version 2.0. Sherry was able to offer her Presidential year in review. (Sandy is anxious to do the same, Sandy for President!) We presented our Business of the Year award to B & R Auto Body owner Rick Wooley. Paul continues to search in vain for Brad 2 so that he can present him the Paul Harris award.
  • Lori noted that all the "village people" were in the house. No YMCA broke out.
  • Among the 23 members in the house, Lori, Pat, Mark 1 and Allen represented the pre-noon arrivals. Post-noon members included Mark 2, Dave, Paul, Matt and Cory.
  • The buffet line featured roasted beef, mixed veggies, rice 'n broccoli bound by cheese, salad, Rice Crispy treats and rhubarb pie. What, no green beans you ask? Sad, but true.
  • Lori gives Nicky G's Italian Eats in Alton (1801 State) 4 stars. Check their hours before you make plans.
  • Exchange student Dani was in the house for her final visit before returning to Chile on the 29th. She had a great time last weekend at the Michigan conference where the recent inbounds (new arrivals), the outbounds (students that have been here all year) and rebounds (former exchange students) all get together and talk about their experience. During that same weekend, snow fell on her Chilean home for the first time in ages. She has never seen snow fall before arriving here. Thanks to Lindsey (and Midwest Members CU), Dani will be able to attend a Cardinal game on Monday. That was the one bucket list item that Dani was missing.
  • Philosophical question posed by Lori. Can you really bar hop if you are just in one bar?
  • Wendell is heading to Cuba.
  • Chris 1 was the "lucky" one seated between Sherry and Sandy.
  • BaseballMania sales net is north of $1000 net. If you have ticket sales you want to record, contact Lori TODAY (Saturday). The event starts Sunday. Good luck to all. Thanks to Lori for coordinating.
  • Sherry is very happy to not have to be 'Presidential' during meetings.
  • Due to a dress code change at The Bank, Chris 1 and Rhonda will no longer have to wear ties during the summer months.
  • Wendell was reminiscing about (former member) Marty Marks ability to peddle raffle tickets.
  • Bill read a thank you from the Shaw family.
  • SAA Lindsey recruited Nathan as the bag guy. We celebrated Joe and Cory's birthdays. Bill, Lindsey and Rick had paid announcements. Thursday marked the 48th anniversary of Armstrong's "one small step..." Trivia topics included horse racing, Disney, hockey, U.S. Presidents and Nina Turtles.
  • The 4-way test was put to the test by Mark 1's table on Thursday. Lori's presence may have encouraged some questionable behavior.
  • Voting for our Program of the Year has concluded. Look for the results at the next meeting.
  • Opening duties were provided by Bill, Matt and Dave
  • Bill had trouble locating one of the four decks of new cards in the presidential satchel, so he issued scratch-offs to Chris 2, Rick Wooley and Brad 1. Remember, you can't win if you don't scratch!
  • That's all from here. Have a fine, dry and cooler weekend.

DATELINE:RI

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD

By Jessica Compton, Rotary Global Grant Scholar to New Zealand

As a child, I dreamed of teaching. But it took until my junior year of college to return to that dream. My undergraduate coursework had prepared me for the content, if not the pedagogical strategies, to effectively engage and teach adolescents English – reading, listening and viewing; writing, speaking, and presenting.
I figured I would pick up the rest of what I needed in graduate school in order to be able to teach. But I had no idea it would be in New Zealand. Through the benevolence of a global grant scholarship sponsored by District 7570, I earned a Master of Teaching and Learning at the University of Canterbury in 2016.

The experience of living abroad in New Zealand was both memorable and life-changing. Along with all the tramps (Kiwi lingo for hiking) in such a stunningly beautiful country, I learned to be a culturally responsive teacher. My courses and teaching placements intentionally focused on how to improve the learning experience and outcomes of students from low socio-economic backgrounds, predominately in Māori schools. Last year, I arrived quite ignorant, but ended up learning so much (“heaps,” as they say in NZ) about Māori culture, the fundamental importance of relationships in the classroom, and how to teach in a discourse of inclusion that benefits all learners.
