Our basketball tournament was a huge success. The players and fans had a great time. 30 members and three spouses participated as event staff, sponsored shirts and/or donated concession supplies. A Huge thanks to JoeS for serving as our event coordinator, well done! The debriefing session@ the Pump House wrapped around 9, nothing was solved but there were plenty of opinions offered. There's a photo album for your viewing pleasure.

Salvation Army bell ringing will take place at the WR Wal Mart Market Place door next Saturday from 10AM-8PM, 1 hour shifts, 2 people per shift. We will also ring the evenings of December 12th and 14th. If you signed up, don't forget to show up. check your emails for updates from coordinator MarkV.
By the way, do you want to ring on your own? The Alton Salvation Army uses only volunteers to ring bells and collect donations. There are multiple location in the Riverbend area where the Red Kettle's are stationed for donations, including the Wal Mart and Schnuck's stores in Wood River. It's easy to select one or more two hour shifts by going to the web site http://registertoring.comOpportunities are available thru December 24th. Go ahead and pick your shifts today. The sense of fulfillment and fresh air are hard to beat!
BillP announced that he has enough volunteers to cover Winter Wonderland this coming Wednesday. If you are one of the lucky volunteers plan to arrive at Rock Spring Park around 5:30. We will assemble at the trailer adjacent to the tennis courts. Dress for the weather.
Prez Lindsey announced that JeanK and RhondaB have joined our Color Run committee. Mark your calendar for this in person event on June 4th.
BradL was our solo scooter.
RhondaB claimed to be a "broke banker" while she searched the depths of her purse to find 93 cents to buy a undrawn 50-50 ticket.
Ring, ring-DaveA and WendellR, who claimed he did not know how to silence his smartphone.
ChrisH announced that the small box circulating around the room is for donations that will be used to purchase clothing and toys for our adopted family. He will have a specific list of sizes/needs next week for those who prefer to make a specific purchase.
CherylM is still looking for an actuarian with a fine arts degree.
It was darn near warm enough Thursday to dine on the patio. The lunch buffet featured beef stroganoff (some assembly required),whipped taters 'n gravy, mexicorn, salad, rolls, cake and pie.
Among the last of the 18 Rotarians to arrive were CherylM, GeorgeM, JeanK and RhondaB.
Opening duties were handled by Prez Lindsey, BradP and RodneyD.
SAA LeonardB took a free will offering while he explained the difference between the District Conference, District Assembly and the PETS (president-elect) events. He was hopeful that Prez-Elect Robin would be able to attend next year's PETS session. He mentioned that RhondaB is now serving a three year stint as our area Assistant District Governor.
The 50-50 jackpot started @ $180. Tablemates JeanK and BillP searched in vain for the joker. JohnP took home the scratch off.

Located in the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands — made up of Saint Thomas, Saint John, and Saint Croix — weren’t always an American territory. They were originally home to Indigenous peoples such as the Arawaks and the Caribs but were later colonized by the Spanish and the French, and eventually by the Danes, who gained full control of the three islands in the 17th century. Then called the Danish West Indies, the islands were not a particularly profitable colony, and Denmark tried several times to sell them to other imperial powers. Eventually, they found a buyer: the United States. On-and-off negotiations began in 1865 and lasted for five decades until World War I, when the islands were seen as a strategic defensive asset for the U.S. They were formally transferred from Denmark to the U.S. on March 31, 1917, in exchange for $25 million in gold coin. Transfer Day is still celebrated in the U.S. Virgin Islands to this day.

LeonardB was pushing the idea of using Facebook to promote the WR club.
Bethalto Rotarian "cousin"Jeff Dyer attended the EA meeting and invited everyone to attend the upcoming Bethalto Christmas Walk.
The WR club welcomed Junior Rotarians Kasey Morgan and Paige Humbert.
Potential member Rev Bill Pyatt paid a visit to the EA club. ( He is now considered a member with potential.)
WR December birthdays were celebrated for DaveA, SteveD and JimH.
AllenH and ChrisH helped open the EA meeting.
AlanaY introduce WR meeting guests and announce that the $558 50-50 jackpot was now down to 15 cards.
LoriP was looking for EA drivers to deliver Christmas flowers.
DonnaK was serving as the WR SAA in the absence of JeanK and fined everyone who did not assist with dictionary distribution. She also collected a Happy Fine from PaulG.
RickH announced that the EA club had collected almost $300 Turkey Fund $'s.
Tammy Iskarous presented the WR program.
The EA club celebrated RhondaB's birthday even though she had depleted her $'s paying fines.
The EA club found out that the word "selfie" was then newest entry in Websters dictionary.

FROM GSE TO LEADERSHIP
MY JOURNEY INTO ROTARY

In 2008, I happened to see a newspaper ad promoting Group Study Exchange through Rotary. Intrigued, I applied for the program never suspecting the many ways this simple action would impact my life.
Dharmendra Gangrade, a Rotary member who had previously taken part in a Group Study Exchange, oversaw training me and other applicants. The path forward was full of twists and turns, but after a year as an alternate, I was selected for a trip to Switzerland the following year.
I experienced many different aspects of my trade as a retail professional in Switzerland. Our team leader did everything he could to enhance our experience and allow us to gain new insights. The affection and kindness that I received from our host families spoke volumes about the program. I was amazed by every single aspect from the level of training that went into it to all the different presentations we gave and received at clubs both before and after. The generosity of Rotary to offer this level of professional development to non-members astounded me.
Not long after, with all these experiences still fresh in my mind, I received an invitation from the Rotary club that hosted my exchange to join their club. The decision was easy – I wanted to give back in any way I could. But in reality, I have always received as much as I have given or more.
I later had a chance to get involved with another club that spun off of that club as charter secretary and eventually president. I now serve the Rotary Club of Deonar in District 3141 as director of public relations working together with club leaders, something I truly enjoy. I write on a variety of topics and maintain a monthly blog that keeps our community and members informed.
I have also had the good fortune to visit RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, and meet the amazing people who provide support to clubs and districts.
What has kept me in Rotary these many years is the level of engagement that I am able to have with like-minded people who enable me to take part in truly amazing projects. I completely agree with RI President Shekhar Mehta, who has said that the rent we pay to stay on planet earth is the service we provide to our community. I am a Rotary member for life because of the opportunity it provides me to continue impacting the world in meaningful, fun, and engaging ways.
