NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
THE TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME GANG

  • Our program presenter was Lee Cox. She is the Marketing & Development Director for the Alton Little Theater. They are preparing for their 83rd year. Wow! Take a look at the video and find out about some of the good things on the horizon for the ALT.
  • Once again there were 19 members in the house. Allen, Pat, Wendell and Mark 1 were the early arrivals. It was hard to keep track of the folks arriving fashionably late. Roger, Chris 1, Rhonda and Mark 2 were representin'.
  • It was breakfast for lunch day. The kosher bacon was a definite hit. There were some interesting food-on-plate arrangements. Allen tried to hide his eggs under gravy and hot sauce.  Fred was NOT all in with the breakfast for lunch thing. If memory serves me correctly (good luck with that) this was only the second time that we have been served this selection. Did we mention that there was also salad, mini pies and cakes? Sandy suggested wrapping a pancake around some bacon and lettuce.
  • It was good to have Sandy back from her knee surgery. It seems as though she has lost her lip limp.
  • Mark 1 was just off the boat from his Cuban adventure. We predict a vacay program in the very near future. Liberated cigars for everyone!
  • Sherry reported that everyone had a good time at the Cards-Cubs game and that Roger brought a Cub fan.
  • The bell repair is 1/2 finished. Wendell may need to assist with placing the Rotary cog in its proper orientation. Chris kept Paul in check.
  • Lori was MIA but Roger encouraged everyone to sell your Mania tix. Don't wait until the last moment to turn in the sold ducats.
  • Everyone had a chance to vote on the Business of the Year award. Chris 1 reminded everyone to not use Roman numerals when marking the ballot.
  • The sign-up sheet for the Installation Dinner on June 30th will soon be making the rounds.
  • The board meeting is scheduled for June 2nd.
  • Pat presented a Florissant make-up. Once again we welcomed Wood River Rotarian Tommie.
  • Bill plans to stay once he leaves.
  • Opening duties were covered by Roger, Fred and Bill
  • Bill drafted Fred to collect the $$$. Rick offered a shameless plug about a used shoe program and the RI convention next year in Atlanta. Allen self-reported that his not knowing Cy Young last week was no more than a dive on his part. To prove his point, he came roaring back with Harvey Haddix and John Wayne answers leaving his table (and the rest of the room) utterly amazed. Model T's and Montana also figured in the correct answers.
  • The 50-50 jackpot tickets went to Scooter Cory and Chris 2. Mark 3 claimed the scratch-off. The $64 jackpot rolled.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry holiday weekend.

  • Current club members serving in a leadership capacity are:V-P Paul and that's it.
  • The program coordinator was Dick, and was presented by his wife Carole. It was about a new EA-WR High School program.
  • The next program presenter was listed as Bob Richards (we presume that this was the KSDK meteorologist).
  • The "raffle winners steak fry" was scheduled for Mark Kratschmer's house after the next meeting.
  • The regular steak fry was schedule for June 28th at the Westerner Club.
  • The RI convention was scheduled for Las Vegas.
  • Do you remember Neil Weidner?
SMILE
  • The best way to get rid of kitchen odors-eat out.
  • I want my children to have all the things I couldn't afford. Then I want to move in with them.
  • Aim high and you won't shoot your foot off.
  • Tranquilizers work only if you follow the advice on the bottle-keep away from children.

WHAT MILLENNIALS LOVE ABOUT ROTARY

If there is one absolute truth about millennials, it is this: Anyone who says there is an absolute truth about millennials risks being subjected to their collective eye roll.
Millennials are individuals, and fiercely so. According to the Pew Research Center, most of them don’t even like being called “millennials,” let alone hearing generalizations about their shared attitudes and behaviors.
Case in point: Christa Papavasiliou, 31, recoils at the notion that older folks see her generation as a bunch of selfie-snapping smartphone addicts. “I’m the complete opposite,” says Papavasiliou, who was a Boston Rotaract club president and district Rotaract representative before joining a Rotary club, the E-Club of New England, last year. “How would they like it if I stereotyped them?”
It’s a fair question. And yet, it seems we can’t help ourselves.
The U.S. Census Bureau defines millennials as Americans born between 1982 and 2000, which puts their overall numbers around 83.1 million. That means there are more of them than any other age group – including baby boomers, who totaled 78.8 million at their peak and now number 75.4 million. As millennials become the dominant demographic in our communities, the rest of us strive to better understand them in order to improve our relationships in the workplace and beyond.
For Rotary, the millennial era could mean an influx of young, energetic members. The percentage of Rotarians under 40 has remained fairly steady at about 10 percent in recent years, but this could be the generation that bucks the trend. To read more link here http://tinyurl.com/jo2ye4t

THE BOTTOM LINE

At nearly a quarter of S&P 500 companies, a majority of board members have held their seats for at least 10 years. A decade ago, long-term directors made up a majority at just 11 % of large companies.-The Wall Street Journal
THE LAST WORD

"There just isn't any pleasing some people. The trick is to stop trying."-Robert Mitchum
