ROAD TRIP
              NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE

          PATTY AND BILL WELCOME DAVE

  • Our speaker was Brett Stawar, President of the newly rebranded Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau. The name was selected to better represent the new footprint of the organization that now covers most of Madison County. Look for all eight episodes of the Alton Small Business Revolution series to drop in early October on the HULU streaming service. Don't forget the Beach Boys at the Alton Amphitheater.
  • Prez Patty inducted the first new member of her term, Dave Scott. Bill presented him his Rotary pin. Dave is a Farmers Insurance agent in Bethalto. He expressed his appreciation for a member invite. We are delighted to have him on board.
  • Remember Dave Scott from that 70's band Backside? That's new member Dave's grandfather. He was also with us sharing some comments and table talk. He and Wendell had some fond memories of many music nights at the Airport Bowl. $2 pitches of beer fueled the memories. Nuf said. Dave's current band is Nightlife. All the members are older guys lacking testosterone, so there's no disagreements amongst the members.
  • Virgil was in shorts, but not yet retired.
  • Congrats to Wendell for being named the interim airport board President.
  • Lunch featured mini-BBQ pork steaks, Rotary g-beans, crunchy au gratin taters,  corn bread (was that a first?), strawberry salad, red cake and cupcakes.
  • BradL and Allen were caught lounging by the fountain at 11:35. MarkS and Lori were the next to arrive. Queenie, Patty, Nate and MarkA represented the post-nooners.
  • If you have sold Baseball Mania tickets that you haver not presented to Lori, get in touch with her ASAP (no later than this Sunday) . She must enter the sold tickets in the system in order for the sales to be eligible for the start of the contest. She rerported sales of 156 tickets, representing a net of $923.
  • Paul presented a 10 year service award to DaveM and a 20 year certificate to MarkV (he claims he joined as a 14 year old). Congrats to these fine members.
  • SAA Queenie recruited Nate to collect the $. She fined those not in the house last week and wanted a $ from everyone who was happy with Matheny's "dismissal". Bill announced that he and his wife are celebrating their 38th anniversary (she's a saint). Dave told us about Wendell's "promotion" and MarkA promised that an unnamed politician will be his speaker next week. Trivia topics covered The Wizard of Oz, barcodes, baseball and origami.
  • It seems as Joe chose not to work, or attend the Rotary meeting on his birthday.
  • Lori returned with great fanfare. Queenie returned with a headache.
  • Thanks to the 15 members who submitted "Program of the Year" ballots. Stay tuned for the results.
  • Once again, all 3 Marks were in the house, joined by both Brads  and for the first time, both Daves.
  • MarkA and new member DaveS failed to win the $42 jackpot. MarkS did some scratching.
  • Opening duties were performed by BradP, Bill and DaveM
  • That's all from here, have a fine and dry weekend.

Origins: Car-The word car comes from a Celtic word that sounded like karra to Julius Caesar, who gave the name to his chariots. Karra later was Latinized to carra. The word car first appears around 1300; carriage evolved from it, then horseless carriage, and, finally, back to car again as a shortened form.

In which royal palace will you find the Hall of Mirrors?

Buckingham Palace
Palace of Versailles
Stockholm Palace
Luxembourg Palace
The most famous room in the French palace of Versailles, the Hall of Mirrors has enchanted visitors since the 1600s. Contrary to its name, the hall is not just a room full of mirrors. Instead, it includes ornate depictions of the political, economic and artistic history of France. The ceiling includes 30 painted compositions of economic and political events, while the arched windows reflect light into 357 mirrors. At the time of the hall's completion, mirrors were an incredible luxury, and this display was as much a testament to France's power as it was to the sitting royal's vanity. Several notable historical events took place in this room as well, including the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the first World War.

MUSIC BREAKS DOWN BARIERS ONE STUDENT AT A TIME

(A related video can be found here  https://youtu.be/UCZU5XnBCik )

By Sharon Bay, a member of the Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club of San Diego, California, USA

I had only been a Rotarian for a year, and was eager for another opportunity to serve, when I was asked by the committee chair of District 5340’s MusiCamp Youth Exchange if I would be interested in hosting two talented musical students for three weeks that summer. My husband and I had hosted an exchange student from Bolivia several years prior and had enjoyed the experience. This would only be for three weeks, and we felt we knew what to expect, so we enthusiastically said yes.
We hosted two high school boys who both played violin; Jonas from Germany and Jon from Canada. Jonas spoke enough English to have a conversation, but after three weeks he was at ease. We loved having classical music in our home and our neighbors also enjoyed it. The boys quickly became friends with the 18 other members of the Musicamp, and performed in three public concerts, before enjoying the sights of San Diego – theme parks, shopping, and surfing on the beach.
Every evening we ate dinner and talked about Germany, Canada, and the Untied States. As they shared their home experiences, we found many similarities. I tried to introduce them to many different foods. To continue reading, link here https://bit.ly/2LqxS5A

SMILE
YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2018 WHEN
  • You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.
  • You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.
  • You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.
  • You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.
  • Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.
  • You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.
  • Every commercial on television has a website at the bottom of the screen.
  • Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't even have the first  XX years of your life, is now a cause for panic, and you turn around to go and get it.
  • You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.
  • You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)
