NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
THAT'S A WINNER? NOT REALLY.

  • We're back!! Thursday's program was presented by Alton CVB President Brett Stawar. He brought us up to speed on what is going on, tourism-wise, in the Riverbend area. The video is posted.
  • Our condolences to Chris 2 on the passing of his brother, Alton High School tennis coach Robert Logan. May God bless.
  • Allen, Mark 1, Pat, Sherry and Sandy constituted the early arrivals. Both Brad's, Mark 2, Rhonda and Paul arrived in time to bring the member head count to 20.
  • Lunch featured sliced ham, g-beans, apple something, fruit salad in syrup, salad, rolls, German chocolate cake and pumpkin shaped cookies.
  • Don't forget about Dave's airport extravaganza this weekend. but wait, there's more...
  • Wendell claimed a couple of Red's shirts, size large. There is still a East Alton Rotary logo sweatshirt and three polo shirts looking for a new home.
  • Did you know that there was an official Rotary handshake? Ask Allen to show you.
  • Prez Sherry read a thank you for our Soapbox Race sponsorship.
  • Virgil offered this quote "If you don't think that today is a good day, just try skipping one."
  • Prez Sherry reminded everyone that early voting starts on October 24th.
  • Mark 2 spent a few minutes gauging the interest in expanding our bell ringing participation. In addition to keeping our Saturday date at Shop 'n Save, we will pick up some additional shifts at the Wood River Shop 'n Save and WalMart locations. (With the Godfrey Schnucks off the board as a collection site, our help becomes even more critical.)
  • Rhonda, Fred and Lindsey are exploring options for the chili dinner. Perhaps a spring track meet?
  • Wendell was back from the big machine tool show, Paul returned from a cruise.
  • Don't forget about joining Lori in the Bees Reading Buddies program at Eastwood School, 7:45 -8:30, Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursdays mornings.
  • Opening duties were provided by Wendell, Allen and Bill. We gave autumnal thanks.
  • SAA Bill and bag girl Sandy worked the room for $$$. Lori has a new Floridian granddaughter. Bill is now 63, acting like he is still 17. We celebrated Brad 2's birthday a bit late. The trivia topics included the emancipation proclamation, Nathan Hale, Scott Sheldon and Dolly Parton.
  • The board meeting has been rescheduled to the 29th.
  • Rhonda, Patty and Bill will be the elves putting our Christmas program together.
  • Mark 3 and Wendell drew the cards, Lori the scratch-off. The $89 jackpot rolled.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

WHAT DEFINES A ROTARY CLUB? YOU CHOSE

By John Hewko, Rotary International General Secretary

What Rotary has achieved over the past century is remarkable. We were one of the world’s first membership service organizations. Rotary members have made a decisive positive impact in our communities and around the world, from helping to draft the UN Charter in San Francisco in 1945, to spearheading the most successful global health partnership in history with the launch of our PolioPlus program in 1985, bringing one of the world’s most feared diseases to the brink of eradication.

The list of groundbreaking Rotary projects is too long to mention here. But as our Foundation enters its second century, we also need to think hard about how we will continue to have the kind of impact and influence that has shaped our first 100 years.

Our members, of course, are the beating heart of Rotary. So membership is a good place to start. To continue reading, link here  http://bit.ly/2bCeXox

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
  • The fact that there is a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic numbers
  • So, when is old "enough to know better" supposed to kick in?
  • Have you ever listened to someone for a while and and wondered..."who ties your shoelaces for you?"
  • When you are dead, you don't know that you are dead, it's only difficult for others. It's the same way when you're stupid.
  • Sometimes I sit quietly and wonder why I'm not in a mental asylum...then I take a look around and realize...maybe I already am.
  • I'm not lazy, I just really enjoy doing nothing.
THE BOTTOM LINE

In a survey of attitudes on foreign trade, 78% of Americans said they would oppose a policy that created 1,000 foreign jobs if it meant one U.S. worker would lose his or her job. Just 11% agreed that international trade in general benefits both the U.S. and foreign countries.-The Washington Post

High speed trading is getting closer to the speed of light. It take financial technology firm Metamako LP 85 nanoseconds-85 billionths of a second-to send data back and forth to a stock exchange. That's apout the same time it takes a beam of light to travle from home plate to first base.-The Wall Street Journal
THE LAST WORD

"When the uncreative tell the creative what to do, it stops being art."-Tony Bennett

"Ability is of little account without opportunity."-Napoleon Bonaparte
