        NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
  • On Thursday GeorgeT shared some thoughts and observations as he riffed on his favorite word "respect".
  • Let's take a moment to thank Chief Chili Slinger MarkSm for chairing our Chili Dinner, a job well done! Also thanks to all who assisted at the event and/or provided desserts and sold tickets. Mark indicated that our net to date is $1,600.
  • Program note-Julia's will not be available for our Nov 10th meeting. We will gather at Mr. Pancho's in their private room that day. 
  • Our basketball tournament is next Saturday. We need workers and concession donations. The event should wrap by 2:30. Check your recent email from LoriP (AKA JoeS) for sign-up/donation options.
  • Congrats go out to HenryS for his 53 years of service to Rotary and his community. PaulG and MikeK are recognized for their 23 years of service.
  • LoriP recently sent everyone a recap of Baseball Mania winners. In a nutshell, we had one $250 winner, a pair of $100 winners and 17 $10 winners, including one for placing dead last in week #7, quite an accomplishment for MarkSm.
  • Best of luck to the football Oilers and Shells as they play their respective first round IHSA playoff games this afternoon.
  • LoriP reported that she and CherylM recently interviewed scholarship candidates from EA-WR High School. There were some strong candidates. RHS interviews to follow.
  • Early arrivals were LoriP, LeonardB (that's not a typo) and AllenH.
  • The Turkey Fund can is now making its weekly rounds. All donations will be presented to Operation Blessing.  If you want to make a donation via check, make it payable to Operation Blessing. To date,$134 has been donated. Thanks in advance for your generous support.
  • Post-nooners included BradL, TylerL and BradP.

The Golden Arches are known worldwide as the symbol of McDonald's restaurants ... unless you're in Sedona, Arizona. If you're looking for a Big Mac in that city, you'll need to look for a turquoise arch instead. Thousands of visitors flock to Sedona each year to enjoy the surrounding beauty of the striking red rocks. The city council has a number of rules in place to make sure that buildings do not spoil the natural landscape. So when a McDonald's was built there in 1993, it was decided that the golden arches would look too harsh. The council and McDonald's agreed that a softer turquoise would make a more pleasing sight.

The WR members were reflecting the recent passing of long-time (66 years) Rotarian Denny Foster.
EA members heard a presentation about Dream Home Charities.
DaveA was looking for members to assist with the next 3rd grade dictionary distribution at Lewis & Clark school. He thanked JeanK, PattiA, PaulG and JohnP for assisting with the recent distribution at two other  elementary school.
EA members would be installing insulation in the Habitat house next Thursday. 
AlanaY was looking for helping hands to build the Halloween Parade float. DonnaK was accepting for candy or cash donations to be used during the parade.
SherryT introduced her mother at the EA meeting. Karen was visiting from her home in Stuart, Florida.
DonnaK was looking for last minute Wood River Rotary Cash Raffle ticket monies.
EA-WR Junior Rotarians Nicholas Hayes and Bekah Null were on hand to break bread at the WR meeting.
RandyN told fellow EA members that scholarship interviews were recently completed at EA-WR High School. He also reminded everyone that the veterans pocket park would be dedicated on Nov. 11th @ 11AM.
WR members JeanK and JohnP paid Happy Fines.
LoriP and RickH missed the opportunity to claim the EA $45 jackpot. No one found the Queen of Hearts at the WR meeting, the $422 jackpot rolls.

Iron lung’s third life builds awareness for End Polio Now

While planning a youth assembly in the fall of 2017, Rotary leaders in my district were looking for a fresh way to connect young people with the story of polio. Their generation is largely unfamiliar with this disease because it has not been endemic in our part of the world for decades. They have little memory, aside from photos in history books, of polio scares and children in iron lungs.
We wanted to explain how Rotary has been working to deliver on the vision of a polio-free world and why. We have reduced the number of cases of polio by 99.9 percent since 1988. But still, as long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat. There is no cure, only prevention, through vaccines.
As work on our youth gathering progressed, we saw a feature in the February 2017 Rotary magazine about Roger Frank, a Rotary member in Upper Eden, England, who had purchased an iron lung and used it as a traveling demonstration piece. We were inspired. The quest began to secure an iron lung of our own, an iconic symbol of polio’s threat.
