NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
PURPLE PEOPLE EATERS

  • Our program presenter was Riverbend Rotary member (and grade school friend of Chris H.) Angela Radcliff. She is with the Gateway Area Multiple Sclerosis Chapter. Angela told us about some of the issues with MS and ways that we can support MS research. The video is posted.
  • The April 7th program video featuring filmmaker Ryan Hanlon has also been posted. Thanks to Brad P. for shooting the camera.
  • We had 20 members in the house. The early arrivals included Mark 1, Pat and Virgil. Dave, Chris, Cory and Erin arrived before Roger rang the bell.
  • The low starch lunch featured meatballs, chicken strips, carrots, salad and cake.
  • There was a lot of baseball talk. Folks were paying $60 for parking on opening day. We wonder if Mark 1 was on that bandwagon?
  • Allen was "back home again in Indiana".
  • Darren was wearing his Kevlar on the outside, Joe wears his under his shirt. Is this the new definition for thick skinned?
  • Wendell was pining for his special chicken dipping sauce.
  • Remember what A. Lincoln said "if you read it on Facebook you know it's true".
  • The triage unit had Joe facing the MRI machine and Mark 1 dealing with a robot. They beat the odds.
  • Erin plans to rehab the Citizen's building as soon as she wins the Publishers Clearinghouse sweeps. Roger reminded everyone that you can't win if you don't enter.
  • The ticket form for the Rotary Days at the ballpark will circulate for one more week (April 21st). If you plan to go put your name on the list.
  • Lori reminds everyone to keep selling Mania tickets. She still has unsold tickets looking for a home.
  • Rhonda is awaiting on a possible grant info for the Wann historic marker.
  • The Installation Dinner is set for June 30th.
  • The Paul Harris and Business of the Year award forms will soon be making the rounds.
  • Erin reminded us to be on our best behavior next week. Our current scholarship students and RYLA reps will be in the house.
  • Roger "volunteered" Randy to serve as our SAA. He in turn, "volunteered" Chris L. to assist as the bag lady(?). We celebrated Matt's birthday in silence (his request). Mark 3 announced that the Roxana Habitat house is finished. Dave told us that the ARCH medical folks will set up a service department at the airport. Rick relayed greetings from Rose and Doug Sebastian. Virgil's skin cancer treatments have ended. When it came to the trivia Q's, Randy promised no sports layups for Allen. Do you know where Miss Loretta Lynn was born. Erin does. Randy and Chris did a fine job of entertaining and shaking down the crowd. Sign em up!
  • Wood River's Tommie Myers claimed the $168 jackpot (don't say we aren't hospitable) leaving Mark 3 wondering what to do next? Joe won $5 on his scratch-off.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.
THAT'S A WINNER!

  • Paul was serving as our President, Mark 1 and Allen were serving in leadership capacities.
  • We were meeting at Amelia's Restaurant (the same place that the Bethalto club was using).
  • Don Brandt introduced speaker Bill Drake. His program was about home equity loans.
  • Next week's program would be presented by the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club President Jerry Thomas. He would be speaking about the RI polio eradication project. (Yes, it's been going on this long).
  • Paul's birthday was on the horizon (April 28th).
  • Pat was reelected to a school board (was it in Florissant?)
  • Allen went 2 for 2 in Oz baseball trivia.
  • Do you remember John Millican?

3 WAYS TO MAKE ROTARY PERSONAL

By Michael Bucca, Membership Chair, Central Ocean Rotary Club of Toms River, New Jersey, USA

Most Rotary clubs would be elated to have the chance to add new members on a regular basis. Many around the world have used traditional recruitment methods such as membership drives, advertising in newspapers, and inviting guest speakers to join. While clubs have success with these methods, there is one key component that helps convert moreprospective members into actualmembers.

What is personalization?
Personalization is taking aspects of a prospective member’s life and applying them to the benefits of Rotary, thus creating a mutually beneficial experience. This involves asking a prospective member to tell their story so you can get to know the person’s background and interests. Then you can emphasize what it is about Rotary and your club that will particularly suit that prospect.

Everyone has a story, professionally and personally. Some of your prospects will be business owners, some employees, some even retired. People will be interested in different things, and have different reasons for wanting to serve. Some individuals might be eager to roll up their sleeves and get involved in hands-on service projects.
