NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Our program presenter was Operation Blessing's Executive Director Karen Wilson. She has led the organization since 2018 and proudly points out that OB is fully volunteer run and that she appreciates all the community support. OB serves nine local communities, primarily with food and personal care needs for those in need. Karen talked about the need to provide shelter for the homeless in MadCo. Housing is the first critical step in helping people get their lives back on track. She noted that the services OB provides are a band aid, not a long term solution. Let's take a moment to thank RobinK, TomS and JoeS for serving on the OB board.
Prez Bill announced that the National Day of Prayer, sponsored by the Riverbend Rotary, would be held on Thursday May1st, 8-9 AM. It will be held at the new Wedge Innovation Center on Broadway. No registration/reservation required. Among those offering prayer will be KyndraG and her hubby Troy.
Our six RYLA students will be joining us during the next two weeks and will sharing some of their experiences. Thanks to LoriP for coordinating.

JoeS is looking for help with our July 19th golf tournament. He began circulating a sign-up sheet on Thursday. If you would like to help, let him know. It's not too early to begin recruiting your golf foursome. We also need hole sponsors. The date-July 19th @ Belk.

Prez-elect MarkSm announced that our Installation Dinner will be held at Rustic Roots, with food service by Food A fare. June 26th is the date. Fellowship @ 5:30, dinner and program to follow.

The $221 50-50 jackpot failed to find a home. GlennB and PattiA tried. 15 cards are left. JohnP took home the scratch-off.

JAMBALAYA DINNER
We will be serving our Jambalaya Dinner on Saturday April 26th from 4:30-6:30 at the Keasler Rec Center on 3rd street. Dine in or carry out.Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 @ the door. Your ticket gets you an order of Kyndra's jambalaya (smothered pork, smoked sausage, Cajun holy trinity, serviced over rice) cornbread, strawberry crunch cake and a drink. Proceeds will benefit the Roxana School District Special Eduction program. It's flavorful, not spicy! MarkSm is distributing the tickets.

Clean water in Darién, Panama

As a past president of my club and district Rotary Foundation chair, I have seen and participated in many successful Rotary projects. A recent water sanitation project has shown me that, even after nearly 30 years, there are still new ways to take action with Rotary.
The project focused on improving lives in Panama’s Darién province, home to several indigenous communities. Accessible only by canoe and small boat, the region is cut off from many of the resources that keep Panamanians healthy and safe, from roads and electricity to clean water and advanced medical care. As families rely on untreated river water for bathing and drinking, deadly illnesses endanger learning, lives, and livelihoods.
With the support of a global grant, a partner club in Roswell, Georgia, USA, and the non-governmental organization Solea Water, my club embarked on an initiative to strengthen Darién communities via access to clean water.
Rotary’s Action Plan lays out Rotary’s priorities for increasing impact, expanding reach, enhancing engagement, and increasing our ability to adapt. The plan has helped me reflect on the water project’s initial wins and identify key takeaways to enhance future efforts.
The Darién region is more than 300 kilometers (about 185 miles) away from my Panama City club, and without road or utility access, we had to get creative to meet community needs. At the suggestion of our partner club in Roswell, we formed a new relationship with Solea Water, which specializes in water access. Because Solea Water already had connections and expertise in the Darién region, they helped us identify innovative solutions. By building solar panels, for example, we worked together to find a way to operate water treatment machinery in an area without access to an electrical grid.
