NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
GOOD MINDS THINK ALIKE
Nathan began his "classification" program with an announcement that The Telegraph had been sold to the Hearst company. (There is no video). He was born in Effingham and grew up in Collinsville. He received his journalism degree from the University of Illinois. Initially, his interest was sports but found a position as a news reporter with the Highland News-Leader. He then moved to The Telegraph. Headed to The Advantage before returning to The Telegraph as Managing Editor. He is now residing in Bethalto. We thank Fred Slow for inviting Nathan to become a Rotarian.
Sherry was in charge.
Brad 2 was the earliest arrival at 11:47, Patty the last at 12:14. Between them we welcomed Sandy, Sherry, Mark 2 and Rod. In fact, we had the official rotary "full house", all three Mark's and both Brad's.
Dick arrived and made a b-line to the food line. He found Salisbury steak (AKA Gaines-Burgers) as the entree. It was accompanied by cheesy tortellini and corn. Salad, hard rolls (donated by a dentist) and cookies we found on the backside of the buffet.
It was nice to see Rhonda's smiling face before noon.
Sherry tried very hard to tempt Rick to violate one (or all) of the 4-way test articles. After her failed attempt, she asked him to lead the recitation.
The way Sandy rang the bell at the end of the meeting you would think that she wanted to be our next prez.
Scooter Joe had to go help with the three new flag poles. According to Paul, former member Denny Weber was spotted doing some actual work at the site.
Where is Fire Safety? Home Juice Company?
Just as Sherry announced that we had no SAA in the house, Chris 2 sprung into action and quickly recruited Randy to be the bag guy. We celebrated Rod's birthday and his 35 years of club service. We also recognized Paul's 36 years of service. The trivia questions covered spectator sports, Sesame street, European "S" countries, Earl Warren and Jack the Ripper. Mark 3 announced that the habitat house at 429 Lincoln is coming together and our work date in October is looking pretty solid.
Who knew that Patty was a Jeep Wrangler kind of gal?
Brad 2 was the snickerdoodle server.
The 50-50 jackpot deck was picked over by Sandy and Randy. Sandy discovered that Bill had planted TWO jokers in the deck. One of those rascals was given the toss. Brad 1 received the scratch-off.
Opening duties were performed by Rick, Randy and Dick.
Look for the next issue of the Rotary Banner on October 21st. Until then, talk amongst yourselves...
That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

Rotary Scholar in the path of the eclipse
By Mikah Meyer, former Rotary Scholar (right)
Have you ever seen a 360-degree sunset? If you’re like me and spend a lot of time outdoors, you know that doesn’t make sense. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, creating a blinding view as you drive east in the morning and a radiant sunset full of colors in the west in the evening. But a 360-degree sunset? Sounds like science fiction. But it’s not.
Fiction, anyway. It is science, which allowed scientists to predict that on Monday, 21 August, we would be able to view a total solar eclipse on a “path of totality” from the jagged coast of Oregon to the brackish marshes of South Carolina. Having been in both those places this year as part of my world record attempt road trip to all 417 National Park Service sites, everyone naturally asked at which national park I’d be viewing this rare event. THEY WALK AMONG US
One day I was walking down the beach with some friends when someone shouted, "Look at that dead bird!" Someone looked up at the sky and said, "Where?"
While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was north because he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, "Does the sun rise in the north?"
My brother explained that the sun rises in the east, and has for some time. She shook her head and said, "Oh, I don't keep up with all that stuff."
My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria when we overheard an admin. girl talking about the sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the beach. She drove down in a convertible, but said she didn't think she'd get sunburned because the car was moving.
My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car which is designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the car trunk.
I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area and went to the lost luggage office and reported the loss. The woman there smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and said I was in good hands. "Now," she asked me, "has your plane arrived yet?"
THE BOTTOM LINE
Fewer Americans are being laid off from their jobs than at any point in the past 50 years. Only 66 people for every 10,000 people in the workforce claimed new unemployment benefits in July, the lowest rate of layoffs since the Labor Department began keeping records in 1967.-The Wall Street Journal
