NEW ROTARIAN

On Thursday Rhonda sponsored our newest Rotarian, Mark Bergando. He is the Principal of Hartford Elementary. During his remarks he stated that he views his involvement with Rotary as a great way to be more involved with the community. We agree. Allen also wanted to know who his haberdasher is.
NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE
  • This weeks program was presented by Bob Ramsey. He shared his time travel secrets. The video has been posted.
  • Look for the next Rotary Banner on September 19th.
  • Remember that there's no noon meeting next week.
  • The August 22nd bulletin was opened by 53% of club members.
  • 17 members, including our newest, attended Thursday's meeting. Lori, Pat and Allen made up the early arrivals. Rhonda and Dave arrived in time to hear the bell toll.
  • Lunch included noodles in white meat sauce, g-beans, bread sticks, salad and apple crisp.
  • Mark 1 and Lori agreed that our last hosted student may not have had the "typical" American experience. Lori did indicate that there is the possibility our club and Wood River sharing inbound hosting duties.
  • Bill welcomed Sherry and Sandy to his table  by saying" there's room among the privileged".
  • Roger wound up sitting in the back of the bus. That's what happens when you do a 'ticket dump'.
  • Lori reported that we made $1085.50 by selling 1/2 of our BaseballMania tickets. Thanks for coordinating.
  • Rumor has it that Sherry was up to her old tricks with her tossed salad routine.
  • The opening duties were performed by Paul, Roger and Dave who spoke about the 'evil one'.
  • Mark 3, who was on the way to the airport, reported that there are 32 folks signed up for the family cookout next Thursday. Arrive after 5, dinner is served around 6. He can accept additional reservations through Wednesday. Thanks to Sally S for coordinating the sides.
  • The the list for crosswalk guards at the Soap Box Race is full. Rhonda sez that there are two students who will be assisting. See you on Saturday the 12th.
  • Roger was feeling better than last week. Bill sez he looked better too!

  • Rhonda noted that Sandy and Sherry will be assisting her with arrangements for the Cosmic Bingo event. The event is coed. Bring your own food, but remember that you will be eating under black lights. Roger suggested bringing marshmallows. Rhonda has had a good response to the event using Facebook.
  • Bill and Patty will be assisting Rhonda with Christmas party arrangements.
  • Roger is going to the District Conference on October 16-17. Lori may also be going. How about you??
  • Happy birthday to Rod and Lori's Roger, both share a 9-4 natal day. By the way, did you know that since the birthday song is copywrited it can cost thousands of $$ to perform in public. Just sayin'
  • Allen won last week's 50-50 and donated his winnings back to the club foundation. Well played!

  • Paul was serving as the club VP and Red was the Club Service director. Dick was responsible for the September 26th program. Rod's birthday was celebrated.
  • We were meeting at Preston's Restaurant ( I'm guessing that this was the predecessor to DiRomeros Restaurant? Who was Preston?)
  • The program was presented by Jim Pennekamp, the newly selected President of the Twin Rivers Growth Association. Last week's program was presented by Bob Churchich, who was running for MadCo Sheriff. Next week's program would be a club assembly.
  • Red, Cecil Neunaber and Jim Morrison were looking for gently used magazines that they would distribute to area elder care facilities.

DATELINE:RI

(President Roger recently received this invite open to all Rotarians)

The purpose of this correspondence is to announce an upcoming trip to Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa in November 2015 to participate in a polio immunization exercise, attend the 10th Annual West Africa Project Fair, and engage in a hands-on work project.  Attached is detailed trip information.  Please feel free to share this information with the Rotarians in your club as soon as possible as we have a limited amount of space and expect this trip to be filled in the next week or two.

Trip Dates:                         November 10 – 19, 2015

Travel to:                            Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa

Per Person Price:              $1,779, double occupancy

Program includes:            Hotel accommodations, transfers, most meals, polio immunization exercise, hands-on community service field work, West Africa Project Fair registration, special Rotary and fellowship events, sightseeing, etc.

In November 2015, North American Rotarians will travel to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, for a life changing experience.   Have you ever heard a Rotarian speak about their personal experience participating in a polio eradication exercise, a cleft lip/cleft palate mission, or work on a humanitarian grant?  These trips have a profound effect upon the individual.  For those of you who have gone on one of these trips you know, and for those of you who have yet to enjoy this experience, you should.

The experiences you have stay with you forever.  You get up early in the morning, travel with local Rotarians to a village, health clinic or impoverished neighborhood, and for the next few hours, you change.  Small children come up to you to say thank you.  Mothers and fathers smile at you knowing that you are giving their child a chance for a better life.  You meet with the leaders in the village to learn of their needs and their hopes.  It is hot; it is dusty; it makes you uncomfortable; it is exquisite.

The West Africa Project Fair is endorsed by Rotary’s Reach Out to Africa Committee (ROTA), who is trying to generate greater connectivity between the African and North American Rotarians to generate greater support of the projects of Africa.  Your involvement, or your club’s involvement, in this Fair would not only provide an opportunity for project support, it would also help your members to grow and to understand the benefits of being a Rotarian.  Involvement in Rotary gives the ordinary Rotarian extraordinary opportunities to do things that they could never do anywhere else.  This trip is just such an experience.
