NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
On Thursday JoeS presented his member profile. He is an East Alton native and, prior to retiring as village mayor, served the village for 35 years in a variety of capacities. Joe was 15 when his father passed away. Shortly after the wake he was introduced to Mayor Frank Keasler and offered a job with the admonition that you will always have a job as long as you work hard. Joe's ability to play baseball allowed him to receive a college degree and spend three years in the Cardinal organization. He is very grateful for all the mentors he has encountered during his career and observed that a sports coach can have a huge impact on the lives of their players. He concluded by sharing some of the village success stories that occurred while he was village treasurer and mayor, especially Eastgate Plaza.
District Governor Bill Durall will be in the house this week to talk about all things Rotary. Please try to attend. Prez Robin told us that an opportunity to make a donation toward the district's African agriculture project will be offered on Thursday. Feel free to make a contribution.
MarkA was pleased to be wearing a clean Rotary shirt, even if it was long sleeved.
LindseyH introduced her guest Pastor John. LeonardB shared the fact that John was also a lawyer. Insert punch line here...

JoeS reminded his table mates about long-time SIUE instructor and Boy Scout leader Lou Bobka's ability to cook a steak dinner on his car engine.
During WendellR's recent house cleaning event he uncovered the pre-nup from his first marriage. Fond memories?
There were 22 members in the house on Thursday, Early arrivals included AllenH, BillP and JoeS. Clocking in @ 12:11, or before, were LindseyH, LeonardB, ChrisH and PattiA.
The sign-up list for the Soapbox Race on Sept 10th is now circulating.
SAA LeonardB recruited our guest Rev. John (after rejecting an overture from BillP) to work the crowd for free will donations while Leonard asked questions about some of the National Parks and historic sites he visited during his recent western USA vacay.
The buffet line featured double barreled entrees-pressed pork and meatballs, Rotary g-beans, cheezy whipped taters and cake.
Opening duties were handled by Prez RobinK, PattiA and BillP, who promised/prayed for an engaging and enlightening speaker.
50-50 opportunities were squandered by LeonardB and PaulH. LoriP may have had more success with the scratch-off.

What is the southernmost capital city in the continental United States?

Tallahassee, Florida
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Although Florida is the southernmost state in the continental U.S., and home to the southernmost point in the contiguous 48 states, its capital of Tallahassee is just ever-so-slightly north of another state capital. Austin, Texas, sits at 30°16'2" N, a fraction of a degree south of Tallahassee, which is located at 30°27'18" N. That makes Austin the southernmost state capital in the continental U.S.

The EA club welcomed their newest member RodneyD. This is his 5th Rotary club since joining in 1994.
WR Happy Fines were paid by PatA and MikeK.
The EA club offered birthday greeting to SherryT.
MikeK spoke to both clubs about sponsoring a bike race in honor of the 100th anniversary of EA-WR High School.
LoriP told the EA members that the Baseball Mania net was $1,550.
PaulH and SherryT assisted with opening duties at the EA meeting while JimH offered the WR meeting invocation.
The EA club would sponsor a member and guest social at JJ Thermo's on August 30th.
MikeK was unable to claim the $165 WR 50-50 jackpot, AlanaY and MarkA had similar results with the EA $49 jackpot.
JeanK was the point person for the WR club for the potential co-sponsorship of an art auction/beer tasting with the EA club and a wine and beer tasting with the Lions and Kiwanis clubs.
MarkA told fellow EA members that the Wood River and Alton Habitat for Humanity chapters would probably be merging.
WR Prez BarbO has established a 10% membership gain during her presidential term.
WendellR observed at the EA meeting that he hasn't seen so many cars in the Eastgate parking lot since the heyday of J.C. Penny's.

If you think there’s not much your local Rotary club can do to foster international relations, think again. I have some ideas for you that are relatively simple and can help establish positive relations not just among individuals but entire countries.
My club is located in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska, home of the University of Nebraska. In fact, we have four universities and colleges in Lincoln. Each semester and often during the summer, these institutions host international scholars and students. Typically, people visiting or studying at a local institution are very interested in connecting with people in the community.
Our club is involved in “incidental international relations” in several ways. For example, each fall after the academic year begins, we work with representatives at the campuses in our area and invite international students to participate in a picnic. We cook hot dogs and hamburgers, baked beans and corn on the cob, organize a few activities and games and just enjoy a fun Sunday afternoon at a local park in Lincoln.
One activity is to give each student an ear of corn still in the husk and ask them to prepare it to be boiled for the meal. After all, we ARE known as the “Cornhusker” state. Our members often make friends with some of the students and those friendships last even after the international students have returned home.
