It's time for your Eastender News to take a winter sabbatical. Look for the next edition to drop no earlier than March 11. In the meantime, chat amongst yourselves and play nice.
Past District Governor and current District Foundation chairperson Brian Barstead was in the house on Thursday to share his knowledge about our Rotary Foundation. The Foundation started gaining traction after the death of Rotary founder Paul Harris in 1947 and the memorial donations that followed. In 1957 the Paul Harris Fellowship award was created to recognize anyone making a $1,000 donation. Brian pointed out that 1 in 3 district Rotarians make a yearly donation. He notes that any donation amount is appreciated and told us that the RBE club along with the former WR and EA clubs have donated over $252 thousand during the past few decades. During Brian's slide show presentation, he pointed out that the Rotary Foundation has been rated as a four star charity by Charity Navigator for the past 15 years. At the conclusion of his slide deck, Brian pulled PaulH's number from Leonard's magic Rotary hat. Congrats to Paul and thanks to all who made a donation.
If you have participated in the Amazon Smile program you probably received an email indicating that Amazon plans to sunset the program by February 20th. Until then, please continue to "Smile" on our foundation. Thanks to all who have participated in the program the past few years.
Let's take a moment to remember Edwardsville Rotarian John Gibbons who passed away on the 19th. John was all about Rotary and was very active locally and in our district. He will be missed.

WendellR was happy to report that RhondaB is now working at Republic Services, talkin' trash, we presume.
BradP, JohnP, GeorgeM and MarkSm were among the last of the 21 members to arrive. We also had visiting Rotarians from the Riverbend, Bethalto, Alton-Godfrey, Jerseyville and Springfield clubs in the house.
Prez Robin announced that we will be partnering with the Bethalto club to host a Pins for Polio event on February 16th at the Airport Plaza Bowl. Pins start dropping @ 5:30. One price will cover everything. There will be a traveling trophy going to the club that wins the event.
Opening duties were handled by Prez Robin, BillP and RodneyD.
The jackpot has grown to $304, and it will continue to grow since MarkSm and BillP were unable to find the joker. One of the Riverbend Rotarians won the scratch-off.

Nearly 3,500 people live on the Falkland Islands, a group of islands some 300 miles off the coast of Argentina. However, they are considered to be British nationals, as the 4,700-square-mile island chain is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. After English captain John Strong made the first recorded landing there in 1690, the islands have at various times been under English, French, Spanish, and Argentine control. Argentina still asserts sovereignty over the islands, claiming they inherited them after gaining independence from Spain in 1816. This dispute led to the Falkland Islands War in 1982, when Argentina invaded the islands. The war was a brief affair, with the Argentines surrendering to the British in just ten weeks, but the Falkland Islands are still a source of conflict between the two countries.

WR Prez JeanK presented LeonardB with his 5th Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow award.
WendellR was dreaming about St. Thomas boat racing in March while serving as the "cake police" at the EA meeting.
AlanaY searched in vain for the elusive Queen of Hearts and left the $740 jackpot on the table. Six cards remain.
JoeS received his "upgraded" badge from EA club Prez Roger Werts.
WR club members welcomed two RHS Junior Rotarians-Oliver Bacus and Aria Langer.
BillP and SandyS worked the room hard trying to "fleece the flock" as SAA and lugmeister. Success was fleeting.
LeonardB paid a Happy Fine at the WR meeting.
CoryG was recognized at the EA meeting for his 10 years of service. One wag wondered how he could have served as the EA club treasurer for the previous12 years?
MikeK told fellow WR members that the renovation of the Belk Park Rotary Shelter would be under budget.
PaulH was unsuccessful in finding the joker. LoriP won the scratch-off, no report if she won any $$.

Rotary International is again offering a life-changing opportunity for persons interested in creating peaceful solutions within communities and, potentially, nations.
Rotary will be accepting applications for Fellowships in Peace and Conflict Resolution beginning early February. Fully funded fellowships are available for up to $60,000.
Recipients will have the enriching experience of studying at one of the Rotary Peace Centers located at premier universities around the globe. As young professional and mid-career-change individuals, successful candidates can earn a master's degree or a professional development certificate. The program is not designed for recent graduates.
Of the more than 1,600 Rotary Peace Fellow graduates, many now serve as leaders in government, education, peacekeeping agencies and international organizations including UNICEF, the United Nations and the World Bank, to name a few. Follow the Rotary Peace Centers Facebook page for updates.
