On Thursday JohnP shared the bio info for the eight nominees to the 2023 Oiler Hall of Fame who will be officially inducted on October 21st. Congrats to club member ErinP on her selection. The program began in 2009 to recognize a select group of EA-WR HS graduates for their life achievements. Inductions take place every two years. With this class there will be 56 inductees.
Early arrivals included JohnP, RodC and AllenH.
The slide right in gang included-WendellR, PaulH, DaveA, MarkV ,TylerL and ChrisH.
Happy Birthday to MikeK-today!
Happy Rotary Anniversary-.VirgilM-17 years.
Happy Fines were paid by BillP and RodC, both related to church, now and then.

A well dressed MarkA was busy proudly introducing his Virginia based daughter Jessica.
MarkV announced that he recently presented a $1,700 scholarship check to a RHS graduate. He will be attending SIUE.
Opening duties were covered by DaveA, BradP and MarkA.
19 members dined on Chicken Alfredo over penne pasta, mixed veggies, rolls, salad and apple crumble.
GeorgeM sent dues invoices to everyone this past week. Check your email for all the info and invoice.
Happy 60th wedding anniversary to RodC and Virginia.

The peacock was declared the National Bird of India in 1963. The peacock was chosen because it lives in all regions of India, making it a truly "national" bird. Peacocks are also part of many traditional Indian myths and legends. Another important criteria for its selection was that the bird was easily recognizable and familiar to all classes of people across India. Peacocks are part of the pheasant family and due to their beautiful plumage, they have long been kept as ornamental birds in zoos and parks across the world.

WR members heard a presentation about the Benjamin Godfrey Legacy Trail while the EA club listened to Cowboy Bob Kincade.
Prez BradL welcomed newest club member RodneyD to his 5th club.
PatA's newest play, School Secrets, would be performed by the Alton Little Theater the last weekend of September.
MikeK and AlanaY visited the EA meeting to pitch raffle tix. According to DonnaK the winer would be drawn at the November 18th meeting.
LoriP reported that the Baseball Mania net was $1,550.
LeonardB took his shot at the $172 jackpot and came away empty handed. MarkA and AlanaY met the same fate with the EA $49 pool.
SAA PatA fined all WR members who did not know the special significance of August 19th.
MarkA announced that the WR and Alton Habitat for Humanity chapters would be merging.
JoeS would be serving on the committee that created the newly renamed Gallatin Awards for local high school basketball players.
LoriP reminded the EA members that the PM social was scheduled for August 30th @ J J Thermo's.

WendellR observed that the last time he saw so many cars in the Eastgate paring lot was when JC Penny's was still open.
MikeK told the EA club about his proposed bike event celebrating the 100th anniversary of EA-WR High School.
One wag observed that the last time MarkSp moved this fast was when he came face-to-face with a copperhead snake on his estate.

A FUNDRAISER THAT ATTRACTS NEW MEMBERS

During the pandemic, the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club found a way to double the proceeds of its largest fundraiser AND use it to engage current members and attract new ones.
If that sounds like a fantasy, read on.
Our club is a traditional one that serves a small community in Maine. We’d traditionally held our biggest fundraiser – a flea market/auction – in August to take advantage both of the good weather and the summer tourist traffic. All year long, members collected gently used furniture and household items and stored them away in a barn built by the club specifically for that purpose. Then, the day before the sale, these items were sorted, hauled to the high school athletic field, priced and sold.
The scheme was both long-standing (it had been our annual summer ritual for more than 50 years) and lucrative: The flea market/auction netted over $50,000 during each of the last few years prior to the pandemic.
But in the late spring of 2020, with the lockdown in full force, it was increasingly clear that the club would not be able to pull off its annual sale. Members worried about the future of the many local charities that traditionally depended upon us for financial support. How would they survive? And speaking of survival, how would the club fare with only Zoom fellowship?
Then, a member had an idea: What if we all donned masks and turned the storage barn itself into sales space? What if we allowed a limited number of potential buyers into the barn, but made up for the small numbers by being open every weekend? What if our own club fellowship happened on Saturday mornings, in person, in addition to our Zoom meetings?
That’s how the ongoing Saturday morning barn sales came to be. We started slowly – our first financial goal was to bring in half of the traditional auction’s financial net and raise $25,000 over the course of the spring and summer.
