NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE
VIRGIL WELCOMES EMILY
District Governor Brian made his annual pilgrimage to our club on Thursday. After being introduced by Assistant District Governor Rhonda, he launched his informal Power Point presentation. Brian offered our newest Rotarian, Emily, this bit of advice "Don't ever quit Rotary" and went on to explain why. He suggested that Rotary has a lot going on, starting at the local level. Brian noted that our club has donated $43,196 to Rotary International since our inception in 1971. He encouraged everyone to attend the District Conference in Springfield on November 2nd and 3rd. It will be a lot of fun. Registration is now available via our district web site. Come for an hour, come for the weekend, just be there!
Virgil was proud to be able to pin our newest member, East Alton school Superintendent Emily Warnecke, whom he previously referred to as "The smartest woman I have ever met". Please welcome her to our band of misfits.
Prez Patty read a thank you note from scholarship student Allison (she and her mum were with us a couple of weeks ago).
The sign-up sheet for the Soap Box Race is making the rounds. The date is September 8th.
MarkA reports that Lockhaven is in fine condition. He also stated that he was pleased with how Red Barn Antiques handled his mothers' estate liquidation.
SAA Queenie truncated her program to allow for DG Brian to make his presentation, but not before taking a shot at Randy. MarkA announced that the Roxana Nazarene church event was a great success.

The early arrivals (pre-11AM) included five board members meeting with DG Brian. Post-nooners were BradP, Cory, BradL and Randy. 18 (19, including Emily) members were in the house.
Lunch featured a roast beast entree, accompanied by cheezy mashed taters, Rotary g-beans, rolls, lettuce (w/ croutons on the side) carrot and red cake.
We were joined by MarkA's brother Winn, who was visiting from his home on the Front Range and WR Rotarian Tommie.
Opening duties we adeptly handled by Joe, Darren and Allen.
Congrats to Rod as he celebrates his birthday on September 4th and his 36th year as a club member.
Paul is starting his 37th year as a Rotarian.
Allen and Lori walked away from the $39 jackpot. BradL had similar results with the scratch-off.

Both figures were lower in the company’s 2016 survey, and in 2011, only 30% favored hugs over handshakes for co-workers, and far fewer did for clients.

To The Gambia and back: Our Dutch adventure

Our adventure started on 21 October 2017. Rally teams of six Dutch Rotary clubs, accompanied by five independent supporting teams, departed from Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands for a challenging 7,500 km (4,600 mile) journey to The Gambia, where we arrived on 11 November. The trip passed through Belgium, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, through dessert areas and sometimes accompanied by local guides for security reasons.
The 11 cars that took us to The Gambia were sponsored and auctioned at final destination. The result: $50,000 to be donated to a Dutch Rotary initiative called “School Plan Gambia,” which enables young women to attend school up to and including university.
On departure, our cars were all fully loaded with relief supplies to be distributed to various hospitals and institutions visited during the trip. We transported an incubator for a hospital in Mauritania and various ultrasound machines and medical supplies for health centers in Senegal and The Gambia.
