It was no baseball mania, but football mania was just as much fun! Student Scholarship
Donna has agreed to chair this committee and I have agreed to assist Bell Ringing
Another wonderful year at a new location!

Happy New Year…Fellow Eastenders!
  • As we move forward as the Riverbend East Rotary, it’s time to resume regular communication so everyone is more or less on the same page. I know what you’re thinking, good luck with that!
  • The full (unnamed) newsletter will resume when we start meeting face to face @ Julia’s. More on that later.
  • There’s a lot going on, let’s get to it.
  • Last week Prez Chris shared with you the highlights from our first meeting on the 7th, where 20 Zoomies joined the fun.
  • During our 2nd RBE meeting on Thursday, 17 members were sharing screens. The Pledge, 4-Way Test and invocation were covered by MarkS, RickH and BillP.
  • Thanks BradP for serving as our Zoom host every week.
  • DaveA was a victim of the dreaded “double mute”.
  • MarkS was a happy double Zoomie. He’s sheltering in place in the Orlando area and Zoomed in on the local College Park Rotary meeting in the AM while eagerly await the Rotary entourage to arrive for a golf weekend. The group would include PaulH and JoeS for sure.
  • Our bylaws committee agreed they look good, the bylaws that is.
  • According to JeanK and RhondaB our virtual music trivia event is on for Friday March 12th, 7-9PM. There will be 7 rounds hosted on Zoom by Big Papa G. Each video feed will be $20. His fee will be $300, so our threshold to a profit is fairly low. Proceeds will be used for our scholarship programs. Round sponsors will probably cost $50. It’s yet to be determined if we will be raffling gift baskets. If we do, we will probably be offering a separate video bidding channel. Big Papa hosts a free event each Wednesday @ 6PM via his Facebook page-facebook.com/djbibpapag/ Check it out so you are more comfortable making a pitch for our event to your friends, family and co-work-from-homers.
  • On a related note, we will be using one of our current bank accounts to establish a Venmo account to accept mobile payments (and meeting fines?) LindseyH uses Venmo all the time. If you need some app practice, go ahead and send her a few $.
  • Speaking of Lindsey, the Virtual Color Run is on for Saturday June 5, She held a planning meeting Thursday PM with her team-RobinK, PatD and AlanaY.
  • LoriP will move forward with ordering tickets for Baseball Mania this summer. We keep at least 60% of each $10 ticket we sell. Hard copy and electronic versions will be available. Play ball! (We made $1274 on the recently completed FootballMania event.)
  • The Cash Raffle is penciled in for sometime this fall. DonnaK volunteered RobinK to once again serve as chair. Thoughtful!
  • RhondaB indicated that the Pints for Polio event may return in October around World Polio Day.
  • Prez Chris has a fine looking dog named Moose.
  • Our Chili Supper will resume with the renewed  EA-WR Roxana football rivalry on October 15th.
  • We will have at least one Winter Wonderland session with Grandpa and His Gang next December @ Rock Springs Park.
  • LindseyH and DaveA had a productive brainstorming session not too long ago. From their fertile minds emerges these ideas-a needs based discount for park and rec activities, sponsoring a mobile van that provides (sports) physicals, a club sponsored adCo Transit bus stop.
  • Club trivia- there are 60 Paul Harris awards among our current members. There are “points” associated with many of those that can be combined to award additional PHF awards. LeonardB sez former Operation Blessing Executive Director Virginia Kirkpatrick received one of those from the Wood River club. (What a great choice.)  Going forward, why not use our points to recognize deserving members of our service area on a regular basis?
  • Let’s take a moment and thank our members who have stepped up to serve as our board-ChrisL-Prez, LindseyH-Vice-Prez (and Prez for the 2021-22 rotary year), LoriP-Secretary, GeorgeM-Treasurer, PaulH-Club Service, RobinK-Vocational Service, AlanaY-Community Service, RodC-International Service and DonnaK-Youth Service. Thanks to each of you!
  • Please take a few minutes to visit our ClubRunner web site riverbendeastrotary.org and review/update your personal information. If you help with member access please let RickH know via riki917@yahoo.com or 618.792.0256.
  • Also, if you would like a PDF version of our membership roster, let  Rick know.It will be sent as an attachment file.
  • Look for a queen of hearts 50-50 game starting next week. Your credit is good,Venmo and PayPal payments will also be accepted.
  • As was promised earlier, CherylM and LindseyH shared current Covid trends in Region 4. We are mostly trending in the right direction, but we are not there yet  for face to face meetings. By the way, everyone is welcome to drop in and leave anytime during our Thursday Zoom session, bring your own lunch.
Stay safe

Ciao! Have a fine and dry weekend

(Sent on January 23, 2021)
  • We had 19 Zoomies on hand for Thursday’s meeting, with at least three fresh faces. It’s always nice to have first timers join the fun.
  • ChrisH, LoriP, WendellR and BillP took care of the pledge, 4-way and prayer.
  • Let’s take a moment and recognize some Rotarians for their recent service anniversaries-MarkV-23 years, CoryG-15, and DaveM-13.
  • Prez Chris and DonnaK will pow-wow and put our scholarship program(s) back on track. DaveA did provide some additional insight about Jim Stewart (of the RHS scholarship award). He is still alive and recently celebrated his 75th wedding anniversary.
  • Our Venmo account is just about ready to accept payment for our music trivia event on March 12th. Rhonda played a couple of free rounds  with Big Papa G on Wednesday and shared some observations. You are welcome to give it a try next Wednesday @ 6PM-find him on Facebook DJBigPapaG, It’s fun and easy. Each $20 donation will allow the person to play one music bingo card. You will need a screen to watch PapaG on Zoom or Facebook and another screen (phone, tablet, etc) to play the music bingo card. PapaG plays music snippets, the song title scrolls on the screen you match that with the song titles on your card. Then press the BINGO! The winner will receive a gift card. Want to sponsor a round? It’s $50 and your name/business will be displayed during the entire round.
  • It looks like ScottL has been working at Marks Mortuary for almost 35 years and is now responsible for all admin duties. Many moons ago Marty Marks was a member of the East Alton club. Was he also a member of the Wood River club?
  • If you are waiting to see AllenH on one of our weekly Zoom meeting, PaulH advises don’t hold your breath. You’ll have to wait and see him in person.
  • Did BarbO have the opportunity to take the new police bike for a spin around South Rox?
  • RhondaB will continue to follow-up on the possibility of adding bike repair stations to some local trails.
  • JohnP’s dream is to hover like a drone over Wrigley Field waiting, and waiting, for another Cub’s rebuilding effort to prove fruitful. He’s a patient man.
  • If you are scheduling a speaker for a zoom meeting please request that they join us at noon for their presentation. They will have the first 20 minutes, or so, of our meeting. Please provide their name and presentation topic to LoriP for listing on our web site.
  • LeonardB and LoriP inform us that our club has 1319 Paul Harris Fellowship award points that we can use to make a PHF award (it takes 1000- points per award). Individual club members may also have points available.
  • Our queen of hearts 50-50 jackpot is now @ $6.
  • Prez Chris is in possession of the check that will be used to purchase the fence banner and presser backdrop for EAWR high school. JohnP will order them pronto. Our club logo may be on both banners.
