WR PARADE WALKERS
NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
We did it! In a 13 day span we successfully managed participation in five community events. Well done by everyone. Let's take a moment to thank our event coordinators for their hard work-BradP, SherryT, DianeS, AlanaY and Prez Mark. We were up for our October challenge. Now it's on to our basketball tournament next Saturday, Christmas Wonderland on December 11th and Salvation Army bell ringing on December 13th. It's party time on December 18th.
On Thursday we were joined by Madison County Catholic Charities board member Andy Macias. He walked us through a printed "slide show" that outlined the wide variety of services that are provided under the Catholic Charities umbrella.Want to know more? Visit http://cc.dio.org
A BIG "thank you" to BradP and "chef" SherryT for heading up our Chili Dinner team. We had at least 19 Rotarians and several family members assisting at the event @ RHS, serving 30 gallons of Airliner chili. Well done by all! To date, our net is $1,300. Please get your ticket $$ to Brad ASAP. A photo album of the event has been created and can be accessed via our home page.

AlanaY and DianeS did a great job putting our Halloween parade float together. KristenB provided our transportation.We had great exposure at two well attended parades. We helped to make a lot of kids (and dentists) happy with our candy passing/tossing skills.
Our basketball tournament is next Saturday (November 8th) on the Roxana High School campus. JoeS says we have 16 teams participating and needs your help in order to make the event a success. The sign-up sheet is now circulating. The deadline to add your business on the team shirts in NOW. Let Joe know TODAY.

MarkV announce that the Salvation Army bell ringing sign-up list is making the rounds. We ring at the WR Wal Mart market entrance on December 13th from 10AM-8PM.

Our Turkey Fund now stands at $376. It's worth noting that the previous $40K plus United Way funding has gone away. This means that your generous donations are even more important during this holiday season. The donation jar will be on hand every Thursday.

The term was initially used to refer exclusively to women of Irish origin, but beginning in the late 19th century it became a general term for all women in Australia.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
When Patrick Moore set out to raise money for early childhood education in his small community in central Louisiana, USA, he faced one big problem: exhaustion. Potential donors in the area were weary of being asked to give.
“Going out and asking for money just doesn’t work right now,” says Moore, a member of the Rotary Club of Alexandria, Louisiana, USA. “As a business owner and a person who’s served on foundation boards, I’ve seen how you get asked every day, twice a day, for donations to different causes. After a while, people are just tired.”
But in late 2023 Moore found a compelling reason to knock on donors’ doors no matter how tired they might be. A foundation serving his local area, the parish of Rapides, Louisiana, was offering a matching grant that could bring millions into the community for desperately needed childcare. The foundation said it would match the amount donated by the community. Moore decided to show local business leaders that supporting early childhood education would build a better workforce in the long term.
He knew just how important the cause was.
“I saw a presentation about early childhood education at our Rotary club. It stunned me,” he says. “We saw pictures of the brain of a child that had gotten attention and care, and one that had not. The difference was really striking.”
Children’s brains form more than a million new neural connections every second from birth through age five, according to the First Five Years Fund. A stimulating, attentive environment produces better cognitive development and improves kids’ ability to manage their emotions. Because this is the only time when children’s brains grow and change at such an intense rate, there’s no way to repair the damage in a child who is neglected during these years.
“People truly don’t understand that most of a child’s brain is developed by the time they get to kindergarten, first grade,” says Cindy Rushing, the director of early childhood for the Rapides Parish school district and liaison to the Rapides Early Childhood Network. “If we don’t do it in the early years, it’s not going to get done.
