        NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
  • On Thursday the Wm DeBell ARC school principal Jessica Walton joined us to accept our $2,700 donation for the sensory room update and to tell us a bit about the school. The ARC offers four programs, one of which is the school. It serves 70 students from age 3-22. The sensory room provides an opportunity for students to seek a calm place to unwind.
  • Birthday greeting go out to BarbO-today and BillP on the 15th.
  • MarkSm provided all members attending Thursday's meeting a sheet of 10 Chili Dinner tickets. Not @ the meeting? Your tickets will find you! The sign-up sheet for the event is now making the rounds or you can sign-up online.  We need everyone to sell their tickets and find a shift to help on October 14th @ EA-WR high School.
  • MarkA offered a prayer for the family of a third grade teacher at Lewis & Clark elementary school whose husband passed away on Wednesday. They are the parents of 9 year twins.

  • Prez Robin gave us a heads up regarding the RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) training on September 15th. This will be part 1. It will be available via Zoom and cost $15. She has taken the course and found it to be very useful. You should try it. (Here's info from the district web site-District 6460 will be offering Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) Part I through Zoom on the Thursdays of September 15th and 22nd from 5:30-8:10 pm. RLI is a fast paced, interactive, series of sessions designed to improve leadership skills and enhance one’s knowledge of Rotary. details at http://rotarydistrict6460.org
  • Once again, there were 22 members in the house on Thursday (our version of Groundhog Day). Early arrivals included AllenH, BradP and MarkSp. LeonardB entered Julia's @ 12:08. He was proceeded by Prez Robin, RodneyD, and SteveD.
  • Prez Robin is looking for someone with a pickup truck, along with a few helpful souls, to assist with the setup and teardown of the Vintage Voices event on October 9th.
  • The Soapbox Race for Fun is TODAY. If you signed-up, show-up! See you "on the hill". DonnaK's granddaughter will be the first driver of our new race car.
  • The Cardinals got spanked on Thursday. BillP assures us that he was not at the game and not responsible for the loss.
  • SAA LeonardB drafted WendellR as his lugmeister. Happy Fines were paid by MarkSm and Prez Robin. A smart-ass fine was levied against BradL for attempting to sell Chili Dinner tickets to fellow members. Not here last week? Pay a $. We failed to correctly answer 3 of the 4 trivia questions.
  • An early fall picnic lunch was served on Thursday, featuring pulled pork sammies, corn, tater salad, slaw, salad and bags of Cracker Jack.
  • Opening duties were handled by Prez Robin, MarkV and RodneyD

Today is National TV Dinner Day

What is the southernmost capital city in the continental United States?
Jackson, Mississippi
Austin, Texas
Tallahassee, Florida
Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Although Florida is the southernmost state in the continental U.S., and home to the southernmost point in the contiguous 48 states, its capital of Tallahassee is just ever-so-slightly north of another state capital. Austin, Texas, sits at 30°16'2" N, a fraction of a degree south of Tallahassee, which is located at 30°27'18" N. That makes Austin the southernmost state capital in the continental U.S.
FIELD OF HONOR
The Forest Rotary club (in Virginia) sponsors an annual event they call the 1000 Flags Field of Honor. The display is designed to showcase what people have given and continue to give in service to the country. That includes the military, first responders, EMTs, firefighters, police, and more. If you would like watch a local TV stations coverage of the event, link here  https://wset.com/news/local/1000-flags-forest-rotary-club-celebrates-5th-annual-field-of-honor

BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY MONTH
We are fortunate to be able to read these words, or any others. And we are fortunate to be a part of an organization that is dedicated to making our world a better place by helping those who can't read. There are an estimated 773 million illiterate adults who can't read these words or write their own names. They are at a clear disadvantage in life, with limited opportunities to work. And the situation is not necessarily their fault. Last year The Rotary Foundation approved 104 global grants totaling $6.3 million for basic education and literacy projects. At the community level Rotary clubs are well known for book drives that have changes the lives of so many children. But when we gather many clubs and districts together and work on large-scale Rotary Foundation projects, we have the potential to impact entire communities for generations. The opportunities for Rotary to make a difference in literacy are boundless. Once basic reading and writing is achieved, it opens a path to other types of literacy, such as numerical literacy, digital literacy, and financial literacy.
