         NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE

            BACK IN '75...
  • As part of the newly initiated 5th meeting of the month protocol, Allen took to the podium to share a bit of personal background. He joined the club the same year he graduated from Millikan University, 1975. He really wanted to join the Wood River club but his Dad's "classification" meant that Allen accepted a "table scraps" slot with our club. (We're glad he did.) His passion is collecting hoarding baseball cards. Allen and his wonderful wife Pam have two adult daughters. Earlier in the meeting Colonel Dave shared his vision of the 5th meeting idea. A lot of the newest members have no idea about the back story of the most senior club members. So...any month that has a 5th meeting a senior member will be requested to share with the club their personal story. If you fit this profile, you may volunteer or be assigned to to "take the fifth".
  • Sherry was the first to arrive, sporting a "bon voyage" t-shirt. This girl is ready to pass the gavel to Bill.
  • Where's Bill you ask? This week he claims to be in Vermont searching for maple tree sap or Chris Carpenter. Believe what you will. He will return this week.
  • 19 members loaded on the beef 'n noodles, g-beans, salad, crispy rolls and cake. Side bets are encouraged on the first date that green beans will not appear on the buffet line. Will it be in 2017? perhaps 2019? Is never an option?
  • Allen, Mark 1, Darren and Ty followed Sherry as the vanguard of the before-nooners. The after-nooners included Lindsey, Randy, Paul and Joe. Let's not forget Roger.
  • Chris 1 was MIA
  • Saw a sign at the Edwardsville American Legion that they have a display of Civil War aircraft. Just sayin'...
  • We welcomed Tommie Myers form the Wood River club.
  • Rhonda is not involved with the funeral business.
  • Lori and Sandy were both absent assisting ill relatives. Please keep them in your prayers.
  • Don't forget that the Installation Dinner is scheduled for the 29th. The hard copy sign-up list has gone missing. You can sign-up on line (Lori recently sent everyone an email with the link.)
  • Shaved Dave was bragging about his recoverable facial resource.
  • Did Clarence Decker really have a bowling alley in his basement.
  • Is Pat the new Matlock?
  • Once again Rick covered the SAA duties, with a bucket assist from Joe. The right or wrong questions covered architect Eero Saarinen, baby names and cool cities.  And, by the way, the drunk guy did not find Jesus.
  • 50-50 cards were drawn by Pat and Sherry. These both politely declined the opportunity to pocket the $127 jackpot. Dave took the scratch-off back to the airport.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

Rotary brought joy back into my life

By Jack Bechaud, Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, USA

If you would have told me a few years ago that I’d be lugging 15 bags of cement in the high mountains of Cusco, Peru, to help local villagers, I would not have believed you. It sounds a little cliché, but Rotary has helped me come so far, in so many ways. It’s helped me grow as a person in ways I never thought possible. It’s brought joy back to my life. This was my second service trip with the Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, within a short period of time. Traveling so far away from home with many hours in a plane and airports is not necessarily my idea of a good time. Further, having what seems like just come back from an amazing trip to India and new friends there, not to mention the incredible work we did, then turning around and getting on more planes might seem crazy to some of you. SMILE
OXYMORONS

Why is the third hand on the watch called the second hand?

Why does "slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing?

Why do "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing?

Why do "tug" boats push their barges?

Why do we sing "Take me out to the ball game" when we are already there?

Why are they called "stands" when they are made for sitting?

Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected?

Why do "overlook" and "oversee" mean opposite things?

Why do we put suits in garment bags and garments in a suitcase?

How come abbreviated is such a long word?

THE BOTTOM LINE

There are more stock market indexes in the U.S. than there are individual stocks. There are just over 4,000 stocks compared with 5,000 indexes, including traditional ones like the S&P 500, and niche indexes that track specific industries or other groups of similar stocks.-Bloomberg.com

Amazon's initial public offering occurred 20 years ago. An investor who put in $10,000 then would have nearly $5 million today. Amazon's current valuation is now about twice that of Walmart.-The New York Times
LAST WORD

"The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both."-Carl Sagan

"Don't get me started on the prevalence of ignorance among people with access to instant information."-Harper Lee
