                     I'M FEELIN' LUCKY
  • No program, no problem. Bill asked each table to focus on the question "What is the most rewarding Rotary activity that you have been involved in during the past five years?" Answers included our scholarship program, the basketball tournament, the Habitat for Humanity project and the Soap Box race. Bill knows that everyone has choices and he thanked everyone for choosing Rotary, especially the East Alton version.
  • Rhonda is patiently awaiting her May 31st date with the surgeon to repair her fractured ankle. Sally Speciale now has a pacemaker after a recent heart stopping event. We wish both a speedy recovery. Please keep them in your prayers.
  • You can still sign-up for the Village Cleanup Day on June 2nd. Report to the Keasler Center @10AM. Lunch is included.
  • Brad2 circulated a hard copy version of the Paul Harris award nomination form. (Lori sent everyone an electronic version.) Please submit no later than the May 28th meeting.
  • Early arrivals included Allen, "Lucky 13" Virgil, Patty and Mark1. Post-nooners were Brad1, Paul, Chris1 and Mark2.
  • Lori still has 5 packets of BaseballMania tickets left. Our current net is just shy of $400.
  • Brad2 offered Memorial Day event reminders to everyone.
  • Bill dusted off his SAA hat as a replacement for Chris2, who was replacing vacationing Queenie. Patty collected the $$$. His trivia topics included the Brooklyn Bridge, Congress, the telegraph (the dot-dash version) and Duke Ellington. Everyone was fined if they had not been inside a hospital the past week. A fine almost everyone enjoyed paying.
  • 17 members enjoyed Taco Thursday along with chocolate roll cake and pie.
  • Once again, anyone seen Sherry or Sandy?? The rumor mill churns.
  • Bill returned to take control of the gavel.
  • 'Honest' Lori pulled her and Bill's 50-50 numbers, with predictable results. Allen took the scratch-off home.
  • Opening duties were performed by Patty, Matt and Dave, who encouraged us to remember what Memorial Day is all about.
  • That's all from here, have a fine and dry Memorial Day weekend.

TURNING TRASH INTO TREASURE

By Binish Desai, a member of the Rotary Club of Bulsar, India, and a former Rotary Youth Exchange student

I started my journey in Rotary as a Youth Exchange Student in 2009-10, hosted by the Rotary Club of Waukegan, Illinois, USA. I’m now a member of the Rotary Club of Bulsar, India, and Rotary helps me live out my dream, a dream I have had since age 11 – giving back to my community in service.
In 2005, I created my first brick using industrial paper waste and chewing gum. Similar bricks of recycled materials would go on to make thousands of stand-alone toilets for rural communities by 2015. The company I founded, Eco Eclectic Technologies, continues to research and invent new products in pursuit of a clean India. It is a vision captured in one of my mantras:
“Nothing is useless in this world. What might be a waste to you is someone else’s assets.”
I like to tell people that Eco Eclectic Technologies is a transformation parlor for industrial waste. Neglected and unwanted waste comes to us instead of the landfill, and we transform it into useful items that people can use in their everyday lives. SMILE
An Illinois couple decided to vacation to Florida during the winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Illinois and flew to Florida on Thursday. His wife would fly down the following day.
The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, he sent the e-mail.
Meanwhile.....somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister of many years who was called home to glory following a sudden heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she fainted.
The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:
To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived
Date: 16 May 2003
I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is not as uneventful as mine was.
P.S. Sure is hot down here!
