Welcome to 2023. Here's hoping for only the best for you in the new year. Let's catch up a bit. Thanks to all the elves who assisted with Salvation Army bell ringing last month. We appreciate MarkV serving as our coordinator. We had a great Christmas party at MikeK's Cracker Factory penthouse. We appreciate BillP serving as the "in absentia" organizer. Also, thanks to LoriP and her gang for bringing joy and smiles to some of our senior citizens by delivering Christmas flowers.
On Thursday we welcomed our newest Rotarian Mario Sherrell. Mario is the Superintendent of the East Alton School District. If you have not already done so, please extend a warm RBE welcome to him.
DaveA shared some interesting tales from his recent 11 day Caribbean cruise. They included: Meeting some baseball Cardinal executives, seeing MarkA in the airport, making a new friend from Worden and holding an on-board Rotary meeting. Fun times.
TylerL offered a shameless plug for the upcoming Trivia Night sponsored by EA Park & Rec. Here are the essentials-Feb. 25th, $160 for a table of eight (soda and beer included), doors open @ 6, trivia @ 7, bring your own snacks, held @ the VFW in WR, register by calling 618.259.7411.

We welcomed Riverbend Rotarian Jeanie Truckey to our Thursday gathering.
It looks like BillP got some new Chuck Taylors for Christmas.
LeonardB encouraged everyone to attend the Jan 26th meeting to hear District Rotary Foundation Chair Brian Barstead talk about our foundation. Leonard is selling $25 opportunities to win a Paul Harris award. The winner decides who will be the beneficiary of the honor. For all the details, take a look at the Thursday email from Leonard.
Following up on their New Year's resolution to arrive in a more timely fashion, PaulH and LeonardB were on hand around noon. Early arrivals included DarrenC, AllenH and LoriP.
The buffet featured baked chicken in BBQ sauce, cheezy whipped taters, Rotary g-beans, baby carrots, garlic bread, salad and cherry Moon Pies/cookies.

BradL arrived at 12:20, PattyA found her way a few minutes earlier.
Our meeting census included 14 club members.
Prez Robin announced that we will be partnering with the Bethalto club to host a Pins for Polio event on February 15th at the Airport Plaza Bowl. Details to follow.
.SAA LeonardB and reluctant lugmeister BradL collected a $ from several members. Not sure why, just because. In honor of the King holiday, Leonard did share a few M.L. King thoughtful quotes.
Opening duties were handled by Prez Robin, PaulH and BillP.
The jackpot has grown to $272, not enough to interest either BillP or AllenH. BradP won the scratch-off.

The world’s longest road, the Pan-American Highway stretches from Alaska all the way to the southern tip of Argentina. That covers about 19,000 miles and passes through 14 countries.The North and South American highway system was initially intended to be a single highway route from Laredo, Mexico to Buenos Aires, Argentina. However, a network of highways sprung from it, extending the route through North America to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and south to Ushuaia, Argentina. A 60-mile stretch of the road remains incomplete. Known as the Darién Gap, this area covers a dangerous rainforest between Colombia and Panama and cannot be traversed using a conventional vehicle.

It was nice to have both ErinP and VirgilM in the house @ Julia's sharing pork two-ways.
JeanK paid a Happy Fine while promoting ticket sales for the RHS After-Prom event.
The EA club purchased a table for the upcoming trivia event sponsored by the Riverbend Family Ministries.
SAA RickH fined anyone not signed up to assist at the basketball tournament.
BradP had two opportunities to claim the $156 jackpot. Nope.

Lessons learned in Rotary’s fight against malaria in Zambia

Najuma (29) lives with her three-year-old daughter Alika and two other children in a small home in a village near Mpika, in Zambia’s northeastern Muchinga province, 650 km from the capital Lusaka. The rural province is one of Zambia’s least developed regions; most people live from small-scale agriculture, and unemployment is high. Najuma herself had a severe malaria episode during a pregnancy, which she barely survived; two of her formerly five children died of malaria in infancy.
Malaria is still one of the most common and threatening infectious diseases worldwide, with over 220 million cases each year. Over 400,000 people die from malaria worldwide each year (WHO 2019), 94% of these fatalities occur in Africa. The poor in rural areas are disproportionately affected, especially children under five and pregnant women. Malaria is responsible for 50% of child mortality and 20% of pregnancy deaths in these areas.
I met Najuma in July 2022 during a visit to the Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia program as a Technical Adviser for The Rotary Foundation Cadre. Najuma had been working as a community health worker in malaria control for eight months. She is responsible for over 500 people in her neighborhood. To become certified to work in this capacity, Najuma received training with 30 new fellow community health workers in all the important factors of malaria prevention and control. She proudly tells me that she received her certificate of completion and was one of the top three course participants at the end of the exhausting training week.
