  • On Thursday East Alton Park and Rec Adult Program Coordinator, Robin Carlton, was on hand to tell us about the A Night of Christmas and Back to School Give Away events that the park district coordinates. Robin came with a slide show that provided ample proof of the success of the two events. This past December was the first time for the Christmas event and it helped to fulfill Robin's dream of building a Santa's cabin. The back to school event has been held for three years and continues to grow. The array of things that participants can do at the event is impressive. Each event serve more than 160 kids and virtually everything is donated. Robin's enthusiasm is contagious and goes a long way toward ensuring the success of the events. If you would like to make a donation, give Robin a call. (or just give it to Darren)  And let's not forget the soapbox race in September that she helps manage.
  • Please keep RodneyD in your thought and prayers as he prepares for upcoming surgery.
  • Our meeting this Thursday will provide an overview of our website, Facebook and Instagram accounts. Feel free to bring your phone, tablet or laptop and follow along with the presentation  by BradP, Prez Lindsey and RickH who hope to provide everyone with some basic information about our online presence. Julia's has a strong WiFi signal for all your devices.
  • We await a full report from RhondaB after she made her first visit to The Burger Bar that now occupies Donzo's old space in DT Wood River.
  • BillP covered for for Prez Lindsey, who was marooned at the library due to staffing shortage.
  • Opening duties were provided by  SteveD, BradP and BillP.
  • RhondaB shared with us that her granddaughter was delighted to receive her first book from the Imagination Library program.
  • Early arrivals included DarrenC, AllenH and BillP.
  • SAA LeonardB collected Happy Fines from BillP, CherylM, RhondaB and himself. He also shared a couple of stories from his youth. He was a 5 year-old flower child and spent time with his uncle living on "the res".
  • Happy Birthday to RickH on the 16th.
  • 15 members dined on that wedding buffet staple, mostaccioli,  accompanied by faux Rotary g-beans, garlic bread, slaw, salad and mini cupcakes.
  • Last to arrive included MarkV, RhondaB, JohnP and LeonardB.
  • Guest speaker Robin searched in vain for the joker to cover last week's winners, GeorgeM and PaulH. She also drew tickets for AllenH, LeonardB and SteveD. The $16 jackpot rolls.
  • WendellR's 50-50 winnings await his return from Columbia.
Ciao! Have a fine and dry weekend. Stay safe.

What country has a special lottery drawing just for Christmas?
Spain
China
Brazil
Canada

One of Spain's favorite holiday traditions is Lotería de Navidad, or the Christmas Lottery. Reportedly, about 75% of the country's population purchases a lottery ticket for the drawing. Locals have nicknamed it "el gordo" (the fat one) because it's the largest annual lottery in Spain. Every December 22, families across the country gather around their televisions to watch the results. The payout is normally around 2 billion euros.

  • JohnP agreed to serve as the WR SAA until his stint as the club vice president begins.
  • RodC encouraged all the EA members to sign-up for the NICE Foundation event, sponsored by the Edwardsville Rotary Club, on February 17th. The WR club agreed to make a $500 donation to the event that would fill food packets destined for Nicaragua.
  • MarkV introduced the program speaker at the EA meeting. It was a representative of the Faith in Action group. After hearing the presentation SandyS and SherryT suggested a similar program serving the Riverbend area would be a nice fit.

  • LindseyH and PattiA would be meeting to determine the routes for the Color Run scheduled for June 3rd.
  • BillP had no answer for RhondaB's question about lipstick on his coffee mug.
  • MikeK failed to claim the $552 WR 50-50 jackpot. The same thing happened to BillP and AllenH at the EA meeting.

Rotary’s commitment to fighting disease
Through our work to end polio, Rotary members take action to fight disease every day. We’re also using the expertise that we developed to combat polio in order to help stop the spread of COVID-19. And our efforts don’t end there: Members around the world are working to get health education and routine care to their communities.
Over the past two years, we have seen how important it is to remain committed to fighting disease. December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month. Here are some ways you can help:
Stay informed about how Rotary is responding to COVID-19 and consider how your club can support vaccination or other efforts to stem the pandemic.
Visit the Service in Action blog to find ideas for projects. You can read about a walk to raise money for Alzheimer’s research in the United States, blood drives in France, and community-based health screenings in South Africa.
Find tips for organizing successful disease prevention and health care projects in Rotary’s Areas of Focus Guide.
Build on an existing project or conduct an assessment to determine what your community needs to help prevent or treat disease.
Share your club’s project on Rotary Showcase to inspire others.
