NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE

IT'S OFFICIAL!
  • Our speaker was Todd Sivia. He owns the four locations of Sivia Business and Legal Services. Todd spoke about estate planning. The video has been posted.
  • There were 23 members in the house to welcome Sherry to her term as club Prez. Early? (11:45) arrivals included Pat, Allen and Sherry. Before the bell tolled saw the arrival of Matt, Rhonda, Paul and both Brad's.
  • Without a doubt we were served the most eclectic meal Julia's has ever dished up. Pulled pork, broiled fish (in a white wine reduction sauce, right?), dressing, corn, salad and cake. The snark was thick.
  • Check your inbox for Christmas in July greeting from Cory.
  • Here's your PSA-the Shamrock Street rebuild will take no more than 45 "working" days. It appears that the RCS crew is hard at it.
  • Rhonda is still glowing and smiling from her honeymoon.
  • With the news reports of recent heat related deaths out west, Joe was more than a little concerned about Mark 1's status as he sought to dip his toes in the Colorado River via the Grand Canyon.
  • Sherry admonished Rick about the candid camera. He doesn't listen well.
  • Is it gluten or glutton? It's president not princess.
  • After attending a couple of recent loses, Allen is a bit disappointed in the Redbirds. He's convinced that the Pena signing was not well vetted.
  • Guests Lindsey and Scott were accompanied by Fred and Sherry, respectively. No make-ups were presented.
  • Sherry reported that all the paperwork for our exchange student has been filed and approved. She will let us know when the young lady from Chile is scheduled to arrive.
  • Rick passed out "Program of the Year" ballots and asked everyone to pick their three favorite programs. Ballots will also be available at the meeting of the 14th (and maybe the 21st). There were also a set of photos from Roger's term (and many are different from what was shown at the Installation Dinner) on the back table. A different set will be displayed on the 14th.
  • Joe would rather eat his steak than carry it.
  • SAA (sergeant at arms) Bill drafted Sandy to collect the $$.  Mark 2, Patty and Fred each made a plug. We celebrated Pat's 37 years as a Rotarian and Sandy's and Allen's natal days. Bill began the trivia part of the program by showing off his new found interest in Bethalto. Postage stamps, genetics and church also played a roll.
  • Opening duties were provided by Sandy, Rhonda and Bill.
  • Bill suggested that moving is no fun, but he was happy to be staying with us. (So are we). He will be in Peoria next week, so...
  • The speaker explained to Bill that church tithing is way down on the list of executor duties.
  • Dave took a shoot at the $115 jackpot and drew a blank. He and Paul went on to help Rick pick the joker out of the deck. Yahoo! By the way, if Betsy's asks how much was in the pot please tell her it was $30. Chris 2 had the scratch off.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.
THAT'S A WINNER!

SMILE
A fellow went to the doctor who told him that he had a bad illness and only a year to live. So he decided to talk to his pastor (Bill, perhaps). After the man explained his situation, he asked his pastor if there was anything he could do. "What you should do is go out and buy a late 70's or early 80's Dodge pickup," said the pastor. "Then go get married to the ugliest woman you can find, and buy yourselves an old trailer house in the panhandle of Oklahoma." The fellow asked, "Will that help me live longer?" "No," said the pastor, "but it will make what time you do have seem like forever."

2016 ROTARY PEACE FELLOWS

Uppsala equips 9 to pursue peace

By Magnus Elfwendahl, host area coordinator at the Rotary Peace Center in Uppsala and a member of the Rotary Club of Uppsala Carolina, Sweden

I was honored earlier this month to witness the beginning of nine careers in peace building and conflict resolution as the most recent class at the Rotary Peace Center at Uppsala University received their masters degrees.

The memorable event concludes two years of training, study, and practice for these dedicated and bright young professionals. The Rotary Peace Fellows joined 30 other students at a graduation ceremony in the town’s medieval cathedral attended by friends, relatives, host families, and members of the local Rotary clubs. Thanks to the generous support of The Rotary Foundation, Rotary members, and clubs, they are now equipped to solve problems and make a positive impact on world peace.
