Picnic in the Park-Our August 29th meeting will be held at the Rotary pavilion in Belk Park. Take the first road to the right after you enter the park from Rock Hill Rd.

On Thursday we heard an interesting presentation from Karen Boyd, who serves as an Oncology Navigator with OSF HealthCare St. Anthony's Health Center. She primarily works with the Moeller Cancer Center but shared some of the other services available from OSF. They include-OnCall Connect for remote health care, dermatology services, breast and prostate cancer screening and a smoking cessation program. Karen received high praise from MarkV for her help while caring for his father. She encouraged everyone to complete a community health needs assessment questionnaire (see QR code below for access.)

Congrats to RodneyD on 5 years of club service, in addition to his many years of service with Texas clubs.
Here are the details about our upcoming foundation golf scramble on October 25th. Registration starts @ 11 with a shotgun start @ noon. A foursome will cost $400 and include a BBQ lunch and steak dinner. There are five sponsorship levels available from $100 to $1000. He then distributed flyers and encouraged everyone to share them with the golfers you know, friends, family and social media. It's going to be a fun day on a beautiful late October Friday. All proceeds will be used for community enhancement with a goal of making a $15,000 contribution every other year.
MarkSm reminded everyone about our August 29th Picnic in the Park at the Rotary Pavilion in Belk.
Post-nooners included GeorgeM, PaulH, ScottL and ChrisH.
BradP will coordinate our Soap Box Race crosswalk duties on September 7th. Two-hour shifts being @ 9:30AM.
The Slide Right In (SRI) buffet crowd featured-BradP and PaulH.
SAA Patti asked three Olympic history Q's. We failed on two of them.
15 members dined on chicken teriyaki, egg rolls, mixed veggies, salad and crowd favorite peach/apple dump cake and ice cream. Yum!
The $196 50-50 jackpot was unclaimed by RobinK and BillP (2nd week in a row, but who's counting). BillP also won the scratch-off.

DARREN CARLTON
Darren Carlton was raised in East Alton from birth (1960) till moving to Brighton in 1981 where he began his police career. He was a police officer in Bunker Hill as well but left Brighton in 1988 and became a police officer in East Alton. Darren was a DARE officer for the East Alton Police Department for 18 years where he enjoyed interacting with East Alton Students. Darren also worked through the ranks at East Alton as a Patrol Officer; Detective; Detective Sergeant; and then Assistant Chief of Police (Major) in 1997. In 2002, Darren attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia. In 2006 Darren was appointed as Chief of Police and continued with this until 2008 when he retired with 20 years of service at the East Alton Police Department.
During Darren’s police career with East Alton, he was fortunate enough to continue his education and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Concordia University and a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. Upon retirement from the police department (2008) Darren became the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Program at Lewis and Clark Community College. He retired from this position in 2015 when asked by Mayor Silkwood to return to the East Alton Police Department as Chief. Darren was Chief a second time from 2015 until 2021 when he was elected Mayor of the Village.
Darren is married to Robin and they will celebrate their 42nd anniversary in the summer of 2024. Darren and Robin have six children and currently have six grandchildren. In Darren and Robin’s spare time they love to travel. They also take their grandchildren on vacations yearly to different destinations.
Darren’s ultimate goal as Mayor is to provide as many activities to the citizens and children of East Alton to make living here more enjoyable.
