                ROUTE 3 TRASH MAVENS

  • Last Saturday about 15 hard working members and "guests" attacked the Route 3 corridor to pick up trash, under the watchful gaze of taskmaster Randy. During the post cleanup nosh at the rec center, Allen did his best to "clean up" the orphan hot dogs. Thanks to all who helped.
  • Allen introduced the program presenter, East Alton Code Enforcement Director Gary Cranmer. Gary is a retired Alton Police Department detective, who introduced the Crime Free Multi-housing program to that city. He is busy rolling out the same program in East Alton. The overall goal of the program is to identify rental property owners and hold them accountable for their property. Did you know that the housing stock in Alton is about 50% rental? Gary indicated that having a police officer serving as code enforcer brings a certain gravitas to the situation. He is believer in aggressive, but fair, code enforcement.
  • Thursday's buffet entree was chicken in rice smothered with white sauce. Floating Rotary g-beans, rolls, salad and cake were also available.
  • Bill was NOT at a Cards game the previous week, but found himself at a church related confab in Peoria.
  • Talk about the Blues Stanley Cup winner the previous PM fed much of the high energy table talk. A couple of old timers had fond memories of the "Old Barn" on Oakland. BradP, ChrisL, MarkS and Matt were all sporting Blues apparel. Well played!
  • It was nice having Matt in the house.
  • Lori has your packet of 15 Baseball Mania tickets. Hardcopy and online sales options are available. There will be at least one $10 winner per week. Sell the ticket, submit the $$ and purchaser info to Lori then wait for the check in the mail.
  • The early birders included Allen, Virgil, Bill and Rod. Among the last of the 21 members to arrive were ChrisL and ChrisH and BradP.
  • Opening duties were handled by BradP, MarkA and Bill, who offered one big GLORIA!
  • Ballots for our business of the Year award were distributed and collected.
  • Rhonda was covering for Prez Patty and almost forgot to introduce her daughter Paige.
  • Paul was kind enough to not arrive before Wendell and Lori
  • Our Installation Dinner is scheduled for June 27th. Fellowship starts  @ 5, dinner at 5:30. Signup on line or at the weekly meeting.
  • Once again, SAA Queenie was not in the house. She did provide some fodder to ChrisL, who, like Randy last week, admonished everyone to not shoot the messenger. These guys need to step up their game. Chris drafted newbie Andrew to do the heavy lifting. Not here last week? Pay a $. Not at Paul son's wedding? Pay a $. Trivia topics included artists, the zodiac, possums and dreams.
  • Guess what? After Wendell drew a 4, our guest speaker pulled the joker from the deck of 52 to win the $7 jackpot.  Let's hope Rhonda can find another Bank of Edwardsville "collectible" deck for next week. Rick drew the scratch-off, which will live to be scratched another day.
  • That's it, have a fine and dry weekend. Enjoy the parade. Ciao!

Where is the longest bridge in the world?
China
United States
Thailand
Portugal

If the idea of spending hours cruising along a bridge and admiring the ocean view sounds like a dream, then the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in China should be on your list of places to visit! The bridge is part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway and opened in 2011. The Danyang–Kunshan bridge spans 102.4 miles. Guess where the second-longest bridge in the world is: China. A sister section of the rail line is the Langfang–Qingxian viaduct, spanning 70.8 miles. In fact, six of the 10 longest bridges in the world can be found in China.

DATELINE:RI
WHAT IS INSPIRATION

By Stacey Jones, Rotary Club of Kingsville Southshore, Ontario, Canada

What is inspiration? To me it means that we are so moved by something, that we are compelled to act. Almost without a conscious thought.
That was my experience in Italy in the summer of 2018. While attending an event at the Coliseum, I had the opportunity to speak to Connie Nielsen about her charity called the Human Needs Project. They work primarily in the slums of Nairobi assisting people with the very basics of human needs. And as I stood there, literally rubbing elbows with these celebrities listening to them speak so passionately about their charity work; and staring out into the city from this private gala, I couldn’t help but question what I was doing with my life. And so at that moment my question became my answer.
Seven months from that night, a small group of us met for our very first Rotary meeting. The great thing about never having been in Rotary before is that we knew we could write our own script. We are a group of young professionals with families for the most part. I understood immediately that that meant kids would be a main “concern.” It’s the entire reason I hadn’t joined Rotary for so many years. I was busy with my kids!
So we decided that our children had to be a part of our story. Immediately we held a vision planning session. Through that process we secured our belief that children and families would be our priority. Not just our community children, but our own. Who wants to go to meetings feeling guilty that yet another evening is being spent away from your kids? To continue reading link here https://bit.ly/2WJ7eP6

  • Perks of being my friend. You'll be the normal one.
  • Not only did I fall off the diet wagon, I dragged it into the woods, set it one fire, and used the insurance money to buy cupcakes.
  • I set out to lose 10 pounds this month...only 15 to go.
  • I do all my own stunts, but never intentionally.
