NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
  • The October 3rd bulletin was opened by 55% of club members.
  • Our program was presented by Wood River library Tech Specialist Scott Pyatt. He told us about all the tech type activities available at the library. Take a look at his presentation. Yes, he is Bill's son.
  • Allen and Roger were the early birds. Paul, Dave, Rhonda and Brad P beat the bell.
  • It looks like Kylie will be our server replacing Karen during lunch. Please welcome her.
  • Roger, Paul and Bill provided the meeting's opening high notes.
  • Allen remembers playing  high school football in the 60's against Edwardsville (and Mark 3). He was representin' "Hood" River.
  • Thursday meal featured baked chicken, accompanied by au grautin taters, g-beans, salad and camouflaged chocolate cake.
  • Attendance was somewhere near 20 (I forgot to get a hard count). Our solo guest was Sharon, sister/mother of Sandy and Sherry. She lives near Jupiter, Florida , but does a twice a year homecoming in May and October. It was nice to have her in the house, even though she suggested that she was visiting the Wood River club.
  • The Turkey Fund can made its 1st appearance of 2015. Day one donations came to $71. All proceeds will be given to Operation Blessing for their Thanksgiving programs. The can will circulate weekly until November 19th. If you want to put a check in the can, just make it payable to Operation Blessing.
  • In the spirit of the season Rod was sporting a Christmas tie??
  • Speaking of Rod, who was the 4th person playing golf during our meeting on October 3rd?  Rotary CSI have already identified Mark 1, Joe and Paul. (They didn't want to, they HAD to).
  • Sandy was working the room selling 50-50 tickets.
  • Roger presented Rhonda with a special backing for her Rotary pin for her recruiting efforts. He would like to make many such presentations this Rotary year.
  • Joe believes that the basketball tournaments brackets will be full next year.
  • SAA Bill and Sandy worked the crowd. Bill announced that he just celebrated his college graduation's 40th anniversary.  The correct answers included banana skins, Don Larson, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chicago.
  • Speaking of Chicago and Rotary's Centennial confab, Mark 1 and Joe had a good time remembering (and rubbing my nose in it) all the "special" meetings during the convention.
  • It seems that Chris was afraid to sit anywhere near, Joe, Mark 1 or Rick. Go figure.
  • Erin reported (via Rhonda) that the EA-WR scholarship applications should be in hand next week. Interviews to follow.
  • Who knows anything about an East Alton museum? In Chicago?
  • Mark 3 enjoyed his time in Colorado reading, hiking and watching Nancy talk to the fish. He must have been staying near Boulder.
  • Bill reminded us that the Piatt's were the horse thieves, not the Pyatt's.
  • The $36 50-50 jackpot was left on the table by Sharon, Rick and Lori.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
This space will be used to provide current information about club/community events.
  • By the time you read this, the Chili Supper will be history. Many thanks to Roger for his efforts in coordinating the event. Please remit you ticket money ASAP so he can close the books on the 2015 event.
  • Lori recently sent everyone an email with a recap of the BaseballMania winnings for this baseball season (go Cards). We made $1,085.50 by selling 167 out of 300 tickets. As you can see, we left money on the table. A BIG thanks to Lori for takin' care of business.
  • Our Cosmic (black light) Bingo event will happen on the 24th. Rhonda reports that she is trying to get a better handle on ticket sales. Please turn in money for your sold tickets and extra tickets that you know that you will not be able to sell. She estimates that pre-sales are now around 150. The hall holds 300. Getting folks into the hall will help us boost our bottom line. There are now five or so raffle baskets that have been put together. There will also be a raffle for a Michael Kors purse.
  • Forget everything that was mentioned in this space last week about the Habitat for Humanity project, It was all bad info. We will install insulation on the 29th. Julia's will make a box lunch for us and we will meet at the building site in Roxana. The address is 132 E 3rd St (turn on 3rd toward the refinery at the police station.) After a brief lunch/meeting time we will attack the project. Mark 3 thinks it will take about 2 hours. You can stay as long as your time permits. Wear work clothes. Tools to complete the project will be on site. Installing insulation requires no particular skill set.
  • The Christmas party will be held on December 3rd at High Flyers grill @ the airport. Rhonda and Patty are working on the details.
  • The basketball tournament will take place on January 30th. Joe, Chris and Fred are coordinating.
  • The Community Hope Center in Cottage Hills is looking for volunteers to deliver or serve Thanksgiving Day meals. Contact Barb @567.5976 or Diane @ 670.9580 to volunteer or for additional info.

ROTARY AND SHELTERBOX SUPPORT SYRIAN REFUGEES

In Syria, where a civil war has been raging since 2011, more than 6,000 people flee the country every day. As of September, more than 4.1 million people have become refugees, and 7.6 million more have been internally displaced.

“The plight of Syria’s refugees is a litmus test for the world's compassion,” says Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko. “Rotary members worldwide are profoundly disheartened by the refugee crisis now unfolding in Syria and other parts of the world,” which the United Nations has described as the worst in decades.

“Rotary is following the situation closely,” Hewko says. “We know our members have an inherent desire to act, to relieve the suffering and uncertainty that displaced individuals and families are facing. We call on you to respond as Rotarians have for more than 100 years: to use your professional skills and acumen, leverage your connections to other leaders, and mobilize your local communities to provide the necessary resources and funding to address the humanitarian crisis.”

Rotary members can donate to the disaster relief efforts of our project partner . The organization has supported the Syrian relief effort for close to four years and is working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to distribute relief materials. ShelterBox is also working with communities in Greece and parts of Turkey to provide transitional housing and supplies to displaced people passing through these regions in an effort to reach other countries in Europe.

Rachel Harvey, a member of a ShelterBox response team that recently returned from Greece, says Syrian refugees are making dangerous crossings to the shores of Greece.

As many as 2,000 people arrive daily on Lesbos’ northern beaches, says Harvey, referring to a Greek island in the Aegean Sea off the Turkish coast. The trip from Turkey to Greece usually takes about an hour and a half. “The flimsy rubber dinghies are invariably overcrowded, and the majority of passengers can’t swim,” she says.

Harvey adds: "The experience is terrifying. Another trauma added to the layers that many of the displaced have accumulated through war in Syria or South Sudan, insecurity in Afghanistan or Pakistan. One man told me: 'It was a nightmare. I don’t know how we got through that trip,' ” she says.

Says Hewko: “We appreciate our clubs and members for their support, helping the millions of displaced people find shelter and rebuild their lives and communities. Every refugee is in our hearts and minds.”

THE BOTTOM LINE
  • U.S.consumers who use American Express as their primary credit card spend an average of $1,687 a month on the card. That's more than twice as much as those using Visa, Discover or MasterCard, who spend $843, $737, and $639 respectively.-Businessinsider.com
  • Farmers, sales professionals and educators are the most likely to marry someone in a similar line of work, according to an analysis of census data on 40 million American couples. Miners, maintenance workers and construction workers are the least likely.-WashingtonPost.com
